1 장로는 택함받은 부인과 그녀의 자녀들에게 편지하노라. 내가 진리 안에서 그들을 사랑하노라. 그리고 나뿐만 아니라 진리를 안 모든 자들도 그들을 사랑하노니,

1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;

2 우리 안에 거하며, 영원토록 우리와 함께할 진리를 위함이라.

2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.

3 하나님 아버지로부터 그리고 아버지의 아들이신 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 자비와 평안이 진리와 사랑 안에서 너희와 함께 있기를 기원하노라.

3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

4 우리가 아버지께로부터 명령을 받은 대로 너의 자녀들이 진리 안에서 살아가는 것을 내가 발견하였기에 나는 대단히 크게 기뻐하였느니라.

4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

5 그런즉 부인이여, 마치 내가 너에게 어떤 새로운 명령을 기록하듯 하지 않고, 오히려 우리가 초기부터 가졌던 명령을 기록하는 것같이 하노니, 우리가 서로 사랑해야 한다고 이제 내가 너에게 간청하노라.

5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

6 그리고 이것이 사랑이니, 곧 우리가 그분의 명령들을 따라 살아가는 것이라. 이것이 명령이니, 곧 너희가 초기부터 들어 온 것같이 너희가 그 가운데 살아가야 한다는 것이라.

6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

7 이는 예수 그리스도께서 육체로 오신 것을 시인하지 아니하는 많은 속이는 자들이 세상 속으로 들어왔기 때문이라. 이런 자는 속이는 자요, 적그리스도니라.

7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

8 우리 자신이 이룩해 놓은 그것들을 우리가 잃지 않고, 오히려 우리가 온전한 보상을 받도록 너희 자신을 살펴보라.

8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

9 누구든지 불법을 행하며 그리스도의 교리 안에 거하지 아니하는 자는 하나님이 없느니라. 그리스도의 교리 안에 거하는 자, 그에게는 아버지와 아들이 모두 있느니라.

9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

10 만일 어떤 이가 너희에게 오면서 이 교리를 가지고 오지 않는다면 너희의 집 안으로 그를 영접하지 말고, 하나님께서 그를 성공하게 해주시기를 기원하지도 말라.

10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

11 이는 하나님께서 그를 성공하게 해주시기를 기원하는 자는 그의 악한 행실들에 동참자가 되기 때문이라.

11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

12 너희에게 기록할 것들이 많이 있으나, 나는 종이와 잉크로 적기를 원하지 아니하노라. 오히려 우리의 즐거움이 충만해지도록 내가 너희에게 나아가서 얼굴과 얼굴을 마주하여 이야기할 것을 확신하노라.

12 Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

13 너의 택함받은 자매의 자녀들이 너에게 문안하노라. 아멘.

13 The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.
