1 우즈 지역에 한 남자가 있었으니, 그의 이름은 욥이었더라. 그리고 그 사람은 완전하고 올바르며, 하나님을 두려워하고 악을 기피하던 이였더라.
1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
2 그리고 그에게 일곱 명의 아들들과 세 명의 딸들이 태어났더라.
2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3 또한 그의 재물은 칠천 마리의 양들과 삼천 마리의 낙타들과 오백 쌍의 소들과 오백 마리의 암나귀들이었으며, 아주 많은 수의 집안사람들이 있었더라. 그런즉 이 남자는 동방의 모든 남자들 중 가장 위대한 자였더라.
3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
4 그리고 그의 아들들은 모두 저마다 자신의 날에 가서 자신들의 집들 안에서 잔치를 하였으니, 그들의 세 누이들도 자신들과 함께 먹고 마시도록 사람을 보내어 불렀더라.
4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5 그런데 그들의 잔칫날들이 지나갈 때면 이와 같은 일이 있었으니, 욥이 사람을 보내서 그들을 성결하게 구별하였고 아침에 일찍 일어나 그들 모두의 수대로 번제물들을 바쳤더라. 이는 욥이 말하기를, “혹여나 나의 아들들이 죄를 지어 그들의 마음속에서 하나님을 저주하였을까 하노라.” 하였기 때문이라. 욥이 지속적으로 이와 같이 하였더라.
5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
6 ¶ 이제 하나님의 아들들이 주 앞에 자신들의 모습을 나타내기 위해 왔던 날이 있었는데, 사탄도 그들 가운데 왔더라.
6 ¶ Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
7 그러자 주께서 사탄에게 말씀하시기를, “네가 어디서 오느냐?” 하셨느니라. 그때 사탄이 주께 대답하여 말씀드리기를, “땅에서 이리저리 다니고, 거기서 위아래로 거닐다가 왔나이다.” 하였더라.
7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8 그러자 주께서 사탄에게 말씀하시기를, “너는 나의 종 욥을 숙고해 보았느냐? 그는 완전하고 올바른 사람이요, 하나님을 두려워하고 악을 기피하는 이로서 땅에는 그와 같은 자가 아무도 없느니라.” 하셨느니라.
8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9 그때 사탄은 주께 대답하여 이같이 말씀드렸더라. “욥이 아무런 까닭 없이 하나님을 두려워하나이까?
9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10 당신께서 그와 그의 집 주위와 그가 소유한 모든 것의 사면에 울타리를 만들어 주시지 아니하셨나이까? 당신께서 그의 두 손이 하는 일에 복을 주셨기에 그의 재물이 그 지역 가운데서 증가하였나이다.
10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11 그러나 이제 당신의 손을 내밀어 그가 소유한 모든 것에 손을 대소서. 그리하시면 그가 당신의 얼굴에 대고 당신을 저주할 것이니이다.”
11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
12 그러자 주께서 사탄에게 말씀하시기를, “보라, 그가 가진 모든 것이 너의 권세 안에 있도다. 단, 그의 몸에는 너의 손을 내밀지 말라.” 하셨느니라. 그렇게 하여 사탄이 주의 면전에서 물러가 밖으로 나갔더라.
12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
13 ¶ 그러던 어느 날 그의 아들들과 그의 딸들이 그들의 맏형 집에서 먹으면서 포도즙을 마시고 있었을 때였더라.
13 ¶ And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
14 그런데 욥에게 한 전령이 와서 이같이 말하였더라. “소들이 밭을 갈고 있었고, 나귀들이 그들 곁에서 먹이를 먹고 있었나이다.
14 And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
15 그런데 사베인들이 그것들을 덮치고 그것들을 빼앗아 갔으며 진정 그들이 칼날로 종들을 살해하였나이다. 그런즉 오직 저만이 홀로 탈출하여 당신께 알리나이다.”
15 And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16 그가 아직 말하고 있는데 또 다른 이가 와서 말하기를, “하나님의 불이 하늘에서 떨어져 양들과 종들을 다 태우고 그것들을 소멸시켰나이다. 그런즉 오직 저만이 홀로 탈출하여 당신께 알리나이다.” 하였더라.
16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
17 그가 아직 말하고 있는데 또 다른 이가 와서 말하기를, “칼데아인들은 세 부대들을 이루어 낙타들을 덮치고 그것들을 옮겨 갔으며, 진정 종들이 칼날에 살해되었나이다. 그런즉 오직 저만이 홀로 탈출하여 당신께 알리나이다.” 하였더라.
17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18 그가 아직 말하고 있는데 또 다른 이가 와서 이같이 말하였더라. “당신의 아들들과 당신의 딸들은 그들의 맏형의 집 안에서 먹으면서 포도즙을 마시고 있었나이다.
18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
19 그런데 보소서, 엄청난 바람이 광야에서 불어와 집의 네 모퉁이들을 쳤으니, 그것이 청년들 위에 무너져 그들이 죽었나이다. 그런즉 오직 저만이 홀로 탈출하여 당신께 알리나이다.”
19 And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
20 그때 욥이 일어나서 그의 덧옷을 찢고 그의 머리를 밀었으니, 땅바닥 위에 엎드려 경배하면서
20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
21 말하기를, “내가 나의 어머니의 태에서 맨몸으로 나왔으니, 내가 맨몸으로 그리 되돌아가리이다. 주께서 주셨으므로, 또한 주께서 가져가셨나이다. 주의 이름이 찬양받으시기를 바라나이다.” 하였더라.
21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
22 이 모든 것에 있어서 욥이 죄를 짓지 아니하였고 어리석게 하나님을 탓하지도 아니하였더라.
22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
