1 예수 그리스도의 종들인 바울과 디모데우스¹는, 빌립보에 있으며 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 감독들과 집사들과 더불어 모든 성도들에게 편지하노라.

1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

2 우리 아버지이신 하나님과 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 평안이 너희에게 있기를 기원하노라.

2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 내가 너희에 대하여 기억할 때마다 나의 하나님께 감사드리며,

3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

4 너희 모두를 위하여 내가 기도할 때마다 항상 즐거움으로 요청을 드리니,

4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,

5 이는 첫날부터 지금까지 복음 안에서 함께한 너희의 교제 때문이라.

5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;

6 바로 이것을 확신하노니, 너희 안에서 선한 일을 시작하신 그분께서 예수 그리스도의 날까지 그것을 완수하시리라는 것이라.

6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

7 아울러 너희 모두에 대하여 이렇게 생각하는 것은 나에게 마땅한 일이니, 내가 나의 마음속에 너희를 간직한 까닭이라. 이는 나의 결박들에도, 복음을 수호하고 확증함에 있어서 너희는 모두 나의 은혜의 동참자들이기 때문이라.

7 Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.

8 이는 내가 예수 그리스도의 심정으로 너희 모두를 얼마나 크게 그리워하는지는 하나님께서 나의 기록이시기 때문이라.

8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

9 그리고 내가 이것을 기도하노니, 지식과 모든 판단에 있어 너희의 사랑이 앞으로 더욱더 넘치는 것이라.

9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

10 이는 너희로 하여금 탁월한 것들을 검증하게 하려 함이요, 그리스도의 날까지 너희가 진실되고 실족함이 없게 하려 함이라.

10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;

11 너희가 예수 그리스도로 말미암은 의의 열매들로 채워져서 하나님의 영광과 찬송에 이르기를 기도하노라.

11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

12 형제들아, 그러나 나는 너희가 이해하기를 바라노니, 곧 나에게 닥쳤던 그 일들이 도리어 복음의 진전에 이르렀다는 것이라.

12 But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;

13 그렇게 하여 그리스도 안에서 나의 결박당한 일들이 모든 궁전 안과 다른 모든 곳들에서도 명백하게 드러났으니,

13 So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;

14 주 안에 있는 형제들 중 많은 이들이 나의 결박들로 인하여 확신이 커져서 말씀을 전하는 데에 두려움 없이 훨씬 더 담대해졌느니라.

14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

15 정녕 일부는 심지어 시기와 분쟁으로 그리스도를 선포하고, 일부는 또한 선한 뜻으로 하느니라.

15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

16 한쪽은 나의 결박들에 고난이 더해질 것으로 짐작하여 진실하지 않게 다툼으로 그리스도를 선포하느니라.

16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:

17 그러나 다른 쪽은 내가 복음을 수호하기 위해 세워진 것을 알고는 사랑으로 선포하느니라.

17 But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

18 그렇다면 무엇이냐? 그럼에도 불구하고 겉치레로 하든지 진실로 하든지 각각의 방법으로 저마다 그리스도가 선포되는 것이라. 그런즉 그것으로 나는 기쁨을 얻고, 진정 기뻐하리라.

18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

19 이는 너희의 기도와 예수 그리스도의 영의 공급하심을 통하여 이것이 나의 구원으로 전환될 것을 내가 알기 때문이요,

19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

20 나의 열렬한 기대와 나의 소망을 따라 아무 일에도 내가 부끄러워할 것이 없고, 다만 모든 담대함으로, 항상 그러했던 것처럼 지금도 살든지 죽든지 그리스도께서 나의 몸 안에서 드높여지셔야 하기 때문이라.

20 According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

21 이는 내게는 사는 것이 그리스도요, 죽는 것이 이득이기 때문이라.

21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

22 그러나 만일 내가 육체 안에서 산다면 이것은 나의 수고의 열매니라. 그럼에도 내가 무엇을 선택해야 하는지 나는 모르겠노라.

22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.

23 이는 내가 둘 사이에 끼어 있기 때문이라. 떠나서 그리스도와 함께 있고 싶은 갈망이 있으니 그것이 훨씬 더 좋으나,

23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

24 그럼에도 불구하고 육체 안에 거하는 것이 너희를 위해서는 더 필요하니라.

24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.

25 그런즉 이런 확신을 가지고 있으니, 내가 아는 것은 너희 믿음의 진전과 즐거움을 위하여 내가 너희 모두와 거하며 계속 있으리라는 것이라.

25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;

26 이는 내가 다시 너희에게 가는 것으로 너희의 환희가 나로 인하여 예수 그리스도 안에서 더 넘치게 하려 함이라.

26 That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.

27 다만 너희의 생활 방식이 그리스도의 복음에 어울리게 하라. 이는 내가 가서 너희를 보든지 아니면 떠나 있든지, 한 영 안에 너희가 굳게 서서 한 생각으로 복음의 믿음을 위하여 함께 분투하는 너희의 상황들에 대해 내가 듣고자 함이라.

27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

28 또한 어떤 일에도 너희의 대적들로 인하여 공포심을 갖지 말라. 그것은 그들에게 분명한 파멸의 징표이나 너희에게는 구원의 징표요, 하나님의 징표라.

28 And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.

29 이는 그리스도를 대신하여 너희에게 그것이 주어지는 것은 그분을 믿게 하려는 것뿐 아니라 그분을 위하여 고통도 견디게 하려는 것이기 때문이라.

29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

30 이와 같은 갈등이 있으니, 그것은 너희가 내 안에서 본 것이요, 지금도 내 안에 있다고 듣고 있는 것이라.

30 Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
