1 다윗의 아들이자 이스라엘의 왕인 솔로몬의 잠언들이라.
1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
2 이는 지혜와 훈계를 알게 하려는 것이요, 명철의 말씀들을 알아차리게 하려는 것이요,
2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
3 지혜의 훈계와 정의와 공의와 공평을 받아들이게 하려는 것이요,
3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
4 우매한 자들에게는 예리함을, 청년에게는 지식과 분별을 주려는 것이라.
4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
5 지혜로운 사람은 들을 것이요, 학식을 늘리리라. 그리고 명철의 사람은 지혜로운 조언들을 획득하리라.
5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
6 이는 잠언과 그 해석을 이해하기 위함이니, 지혜로운 자들의 말들과 그들의 난해한 말들을 이해하기 위함이라.
6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
7 ¶ 주를 두려워하는 것이 지식의 시작이라. 그러나 어리석은 자들은 지혜와 훈계를 멸시하느니라.
7 ¶ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
8 나의 아들아, 너의 아버지의 훈계를 듣고, 너의 어머니의 법을 저버리지 말라.
8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
9 이는 그것들이 너의 머리에 한 은혜의 장식이 될 것이요, 너의 목 주위에 목걸이들이 될 것이기 때문이라.
9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
10 ¶ 나의 아들아, 만일 죄인들이 너를 유혹한다 할지라도 너는 동조하지 말라.
10 ¶ My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
11 만일 그들이 말하기를, “우리와 함께 가자. 우리가 피를 노리고 숨어 기다리자. 우리가 까닭 없이 무고한 자를 노리고 은밀히 숨어 있자.
11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
12 우리가 그들을 음부같이 산 채로 삼키되, 구렁 속으로 내려가는 자들같이 통째로 삼키자.
12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
13 우리가 모든 귀한 재물을 발견할 것이요, 우리가 약탈물로 우리의 집들을 채우리라.
13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
14 너의 제비를 우리 가운데서 던지라. 우리가 모두 하나의 돈주머니만 가지자.” 할지라도,
14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
15 나의 아들아, 너는 그들과 그 길 가운데 동행하지 말라. 너의 발을 삼가 그들의 행로에서 떠나라.
15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
16 이는 그들의 발이 악으로 달려가며, 피를 흘리기 위하여 서두르기 때문이라.
16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
17 어떤 새의 시야에서라도 그물을 펴는 것은 분명히 헛된 일이라.
17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
18 그런즉 그들은 자기 자신의 피를 노리고 숨어 기다리는 것이요, 그들은 자기 자신의 생명들을 노리고 은밀히 잠복하는 것이라.
18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
19 이득을 욕심내는 모든 자의 길들이 저마다 그러하도다. 그것이 그 소유자들의 생명을 앗아가느니라.
19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
20 ¶ 지혜가 밖에서 부르짖는도다. 그녀가 거리들에서 자신의 목소리를 발하는도다.
20 ¶ Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
21 지혜가 광장의 주요 장소와 성문들의 길목들에서 부르짖는도다. 그녀가 도시 안에서 자신의 말들을 이같이 발설하는도다.
21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
22 “너희, 우매한 자들아, 너희가 얼마나 오랫동안 우매함을 사랑하겠느냐? 그리고 경멸하는 자들은 얼마나 오랫동안 자신들의 경멸함을 크게 즐거워하겠느냐? 또 어리석은 자들은 얼마나 오랫동안 지식을 증오하겠느냐?
22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
23 나의 책망을 듣고 너희는 돌이키라. 보라, 내가 나의 영을 너희에게 쏟아붓겠으며, 내가 나의 말들을 너희에게 알려 주겠노라.
23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
24 ¶ 이는 내가 계속 너희를 불러 왔으나 너희가 거부하였기 때문이라. 내가 나의 손을 뻗었는데도 유념하는 사람이 아무도 없었도다.
24 ¶ Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
25 오히려 너희는 나의 모든 조언을 무가치하게 여겼고, 나의 책망을 전혀 원하지 아니하였으니,
25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
26 나 역시 너희의 재난의 때에 비웃겠노라. 너희의 두려움이 이를 때 내가 조롱하겠노라.
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
27 곧, 너희가 두려워하는 것이 황량함같이 임하고 너희의 멸망이 한 회오리바람같이 임하는 때요, 괴로움과 극심한 고통이 너희 위에 임하는 때라.
27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
28 그때 그들이 나를 부를 것이나 내가 대답하지 아니하겠노라. 그들이 일찍 나를 찾을 것이나 그들은 나를 발견하지 못하리라.
28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
29 이는 그들이 지식을 증오하였고 주를 두려워하는 것을 선택하지 아니하였기 때문이라.
29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
30 그들은 나의 조언을 전혀 원하지 아니하였도다. 그들은 나의 모든 책망을 멸시하였도다.
30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
31 그러므로 그들은 자기 자신들의 길에서 난 열매를 먹을 것이요, 자기 자신들의 계책들로 채워지리라.
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
32 이는 우매한 자들의 돌이켜 떠남이 그들을 살해할 것이요, 어리석은 자들의 번영이 그들을 멸할 것이기 때문이라.
32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
33 그러나 누구나 나에게 경청하는 자는 안전하게 거할 것이요, 악의 두려움으로부터 벗어나 평온하리라.”
33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
