1 네가 치리자와 함께 식사하러 앉을 때면 너의 앞에 있는 것이 무엇인지 부지런히 숙고하라.
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
2 그런즉 만일 네가 식욕에 빠진 사람이라면, 너의 목구멍에 단도를 두라.
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
3 그의 진미들을 갈망하지 말라. 이는 그것들이 속임수로 가득한 음식이기 때문이라.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.
4 부자가 되려고 애쓰지 말라. 너 자신의 지혜에 의존하기를 그치라.
4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
5 너는 존재하지 않는 것에 너의 두 눈을 두려고 하느냐? 이는 재물들은 틀림없이 스스로 날개들을 만들며, 그것들이 독수리같이 하늘을 향하여 날아가 버리기 때문이라.
5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
6 너는 악한 눈을 가진 자의 빵을 먹지 말고 그의 진미들을 열망하지도 말라.
6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
7 이는 그가 자기 마음속에 생각하는 대로 그가 그러하기 때문이라. 그는 너에게 말하기를, “먹고 마시라.” 하나, 그의 마음은 너와 함께 있지 아니하니라.
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
8 너는 네가 먹은 그 빵 한입을 토해 버릴 것이며, 너의 달콤한 말들을 잃어버리리라.
8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
9 어리석은 자의 두 귀에다 말하지 말라. 이는 그가 너의 말들의 지혜를 멸시할 것이기 때문이라.
9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
10 옛 경계표를 옮기지 말라. 그리고 아버지 없는 자들의 밭들에 들어가지 말라.
10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
11 이는 그들의 구속주가 막강하시기 때문이라. 그분께서 너를 상대하여 그들의 송사를 변호하시리라.
11 For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.
12 훈계에 너의 마음을 쓰고, 지식의 말씀들에 너의 두 귀를 기울이라.
12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
13 아이에게서 바로잡는 것을 미루지 말라. 이는 네가 그를 회초리로 때릴지라도 그가 죽지 아니할 것이기 때문이라.
13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
14 너는 그를 회초리로 때릴지니, 그의 혼을 지옥으로부터 구출할지니라.
14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
15 나의 아들아, 만일 너의 마음이 지혜로우면 나의 마음이 크게 기뻐하리니, 바로 나의 마음이 그러하리라.
15 My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
16 너의 입술이 올바른 것들을 말할 때 진정 나의 속마음이 크게 기뻐하리라.
16 Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
17 너의 마음이 죄인들을 시기하지 않게 하라. 오직 너는 온종일 주를 두려워함 가운데 있으라.
17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
18 이는 확실히 끝이 있기 때문이라. 그런즉 너의 기대가 끊어지지 아니하리라.
18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
19 나의 아들아, 너는 듣고 지혜롭게 되라. 그리고 너의 마음을 그 길 가운데로 인도하라.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20 술에 빠진 자들 사이에 있지 말고, 방탕하게 고기를 먹는 자들 사이에 있지 말라.
20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
21 이는 술주정뱅이와 탐식하는 자는 빈궁에 이를 것이기 때문이라. 그런즉 졸음이 사람에게 누더기들을 입히리라.
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
22 너를 낳은 너의 아버지에게 경청하고 너의 어머니가 늙어도 그녀를 멸시하지 말라.
22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
23 진리를 사고 그것을 팔지 말라. 또한 지혜와 훈계와 명철도 그리하라.
23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
24 의로운 자의 아버지는 대단히 크게 기뻐하리라. 지혜로운 자식을 낳는 자는 그에게서 즐거움을 얻으리라.
24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
25 너의 아버지와 너의 어머니가 흡족해할 것이요, 너를 낳은 그녀가 크게 기뻐하리라.
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
26 나의 아들아, 너의 마음을 나에게 주고, 너의 두 눈이 나의 길들을 주시하게 하라.
26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
27 이는 음녀는 깊은 도랑이요, 타국 여자는 좁은 구렁이기 때문이라.
27 For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
28 그녀는 또한 먹이를 노리고 숨어 기다리며, 사람들 사이에서 불법자들을 늘리느니라.
28 She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
29 화가 누구에게 있느냐? 슬픔이 누구에게 있느냐? 다툼들이 누구에게 있느냐? 재잘거림이 누구에게 있느냐? 까닭 없는 상처들이 누구에게 있느냐? 충혈된 눈들이 누구에게 있느냐?
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30 오랫동안 술에 머무는 자들에게요, 혼합된 술을 찾아다니는 자들에게니라.
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
31 그것이 붉을 때, 그것이 잔 안에서 그의 빛깔을 낼 때, 그것이 스스로 똑바로 움직일 때 너는 술을 쳐다보지 말라.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
32 마침내 그것은 뱀처럼 물고 살모사처럼 쏘느니라.
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
33 너의 두 눈이 타국 여자들을 볼 것이요, 너의 마음이 비뚤어진 것들을 발설하리라.
33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
34 진정, 너는 바다 한가운데 드러눕는 자같이 되고 돛대 꼭대기 위에 눕는 자같이 되리라.
34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
35 너는 말하기를, “그들이 나를 내리쳤는데도 나는 아프지 않았도다. 그들이 나를 때렸는데도 나는 그것을 느끼지 못하였도다. 내가 언제 깨어날까? 내가 그것을 또다시 찾겠노라.” 하리라.
35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
