1 장로는 크게 사랑받는 가이우스에게 편지하노니, 내가 너를 진리 안에서 사랑하노라.

1 The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.

2 사랑받는 자여, 내가 무엇보다 소원하는 것은 바로 너의 혼이 형통함같이 네가 형통하고 건강하게 되는 것이라.

2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

3 이는 형제들이 와서 네가 진리 안에서 살아가는 그대로 네 안에 있는 진리에 관하여 증언하였을 때 내가 대단히 크게 기뻐하였기 때문이라.

3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.

4 나의 자녀들이 진리 안에서 살아가는 것을 듣는 것보다 나에게 더 큰 즐거움이 없노라.

4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

5 사랑받는 자여, 네가 형제들과 타국인들에게 무엇을 하든지 너는 신실하게 행하는도다.

5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;

6 그들이 교회 앞에서 너의 성도 사랑에 관하여 증거하였느니라. 만일 네가 어떤 경건한 방도를 따라 그들의 여정을 후원한다면 네가 잘 행하는 것이리라.

6 Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:

7 이는 그들이 그분의 이름을 위하여 밖으로 나가면서 이방인들에게서 아무것도 받지 아니하였기 때문이라.

7 Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.

8 그러므로 우리가 마땅히 그런 자들을 받아들여야 하나니, 우리가 진리의 동료 조력자들이 되고자 함이라.

8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.

9 내가 교회에 기록하였노라. 그러나 그들 가운데서 우월하게 되기를 사랑하는 디오트레페스가 우리를 받아들이지 아니하는도다.

9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.

10 그러므로 만일 내가 도착한다면 그가 행하는 그의 행실들을 내가 기억하겠으니, 곧 그가 악의적인 말들로 우리를 대적하여 떠들며 그것으로 만족하지 아니하여 그 자신도 형제들을 받아들이지 아니하고 받아들이려 하는 자들도 금하여 그들을 교회에서 쫓아내는 것이라.

10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.

11 사랑받는 자여, 악한 것을 따르지 말고 다만 선한 것을 따르라. 선을 행하는 자는 하나님께 속하느니라. 그러나 악을 행하는 자는 하나님을 보지 아니하였느니라.

11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

12 데메트리우스는 모든 사람들에게서 그리고 진리 그 자체로부터 좋은 평판을 받았느니라. 그런즉 진정 우리 역시 확증하나니, 우리의 기록이 진실하다는 것을 너희가 아느니라.

12 Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.

13 내가 기록할 것들이 많이 있었으나 나는 잉크와 펜으로 너에게 적지 아니하겠노라.

13 I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:

14 그러나 나는 내가 속히 너를 볼 것과 우리가 얼굴과 얼굴을 마주하여 이야기할 것을 확신 가운데 기대하노라. 너에게 평안이 있기를 기원하노라. 우리의 친구들이 너에게 문안하노라. 친구들에게 이름을 들어가며 인사하라.

14 But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.
