1 보라, 우리가 하나님의 아들들로 불리도록 아버지께서 어떤 방식의 사랑을 우리에게 부여하셨는가. 그러므로 세상은 우리를 모르나니, 세상이 그분을 몰랐기 때문이라.
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 사랑받는 자들아, 이제 우리는 하나님의 아들들이라. 그리고 우리가 어떻게 될 것인지 아직 나타나지 아니하나 그분께서 나타나실 때 우리가 그분과 같이 되리라는 것을 우리는 아느니라. 이는 우리가 그분을 그분 그대로 볼 것이기 때문이라.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 그리고 바로 그분께서 순수하신 것같이 그분 안에서 이 소망을 지니는 모든 사람마다 스스로를 순수하게 하느니라.
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4 누구든지 죄를 짓는 자는 율법도 위반하느니라. 이는 죄가 율법을 위반하는 것이기 때문이라.
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5 그리고 너희는 그분께서 우리의 죄들을 제거하시려고 명백하게 나타나신 것을 아느니라. 그런즉 그분 안에는 전혀 죄가 없느니라.
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 그분 안에 거하는 자는 누구든지 죄를 짓지 아니하느니라. 죄를 짓는 자는 누구든지 그분을 보지 아니하였으며 그분을 알지도 아니하였느니라.
6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7 어린 자녀들아, 아무도 너희를 기만하지 않도록 하라. 의를 행하는 자는 바로 그분께서 의로우신 것같이 의로우니라.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 죄를 짓는 자는 마귀에게 속하느니라. 이는 마귀가 시작부터 죄를 짓기 때문이라. 이 목적을 위하여 하나님의 아들이 명백하게 나타나셨으니, 그분께서 마귀의 일들을 멸하려 하심이라.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 누구든지 하나님께로부터 태어난 자는 죄를 짓지 아니하느니라. 이는 그분의 씨가 그의 안에 남아 있기 때문이라. 그런즉 그는 죄를 지을 수 없나니, 그가 하나님께로부터 태어난 까닭이라.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 이것으로 하나님의 자녀들과 마귀의 자녀들이 명백하게 나타나느니라. 누구든지 의를 행하지 아니하는 자는 하나님께 속하지 아니하나니, 자기 형제를 사랑하지 아니하는 자도 그러하니라.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11 이는 너희가 초기부터 들었던 전언이 이것이니, 곧 우리가 서로 사랑해야 한다는 것이라.
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 카인같이 되지 말라. 그는 그 사악한 자에게서 나왔고 자기 형제를 살해하였느니라. 그런즉 카인이 어찌 그를 살해하였느냐? 이는 그 자신의 행위들은 악하였고 그의 형제의 행위들은 의로웠기 때문이라.
12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
13 나의 형제들아, 만일 세상이 너희를 증오하여도 이상하게 여기지 말라.
13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14 우리가 사망에서 생명으로 넘어갔음을 우리는 아나니, 우리가 형제들을 사랑하기 때문이라. 자기 형제를 사랑하지 않는 자는 사망 가운데 거하느니라.
14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15 누구든지 자기 형제를 증오하는 자는 살인자니라. 그리고 어떤 살인자도 그 안에 영생이 거하지 아니하는 것을 너희가 아느니라.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16 이것으로 우리는 하나님의 사랑을 아나니, 그분께서 우리를 위하여 그분의 생명을 내려놓으셨기 때문이라. 그런즉 우리는 마땅히 형제들을 위하여 우리의 생명들을 내려놓아야 하느니라.
16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17 그러나 누구나 이 세상의 좋은 것을 소유하고 있으면서 자기 형제가 빈곤한 것을 보고도 연민에서 나오는 자신의 인정을 그에게서 닫아 버린다면 어떻게 하나님의 사랑이 그 안에 거하겠느냐?
17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18 나의 어린 자녀들아, 우리가 말과 혀로 사랑하지 말고, 다만 행동과 진리로 사랑하자.
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19 그런즉 이로써 우리는 우리가 진리에 속한 것을 알며 우리의 마음을 그분 앞에서 확실하게 하리라.
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20 이는 우리의 마음이 우리를 정죄한다면 하나님께서는 우리의 마음보다 더 위대하시고 모든 것들을 아시기 때문이라.
20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 사랑받는 자들아, 만일 우리의 마음이 우리를 정죄하지 않는다면 그때 우리는 하나님을 향하여 확신을 가지느니라.
21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
22 그리고 무엇이든지 우리가 구하는 것을 우리가 그분께 받나니, 우리가 그분의 명령들을 지키고 그분의 목전에서 기쁨이 되는 그 일들을 행하기 때문이라.
22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23 그리고 이것이 그분의 명령이니, 곧 우리가 그분의 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름을 믿고 그분께서 우리에게 명령을 주신 대로 서로 사랑해야 한다는 것이라.
23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24 그런즉 그분의 명령들을 지키는 자는 그분 안에 거하고 그분께서도 그의 안에 거하시느니라. 그리고 이것으로 우리는 그분께서 우리 안에 거하시는 것을 아나니, 그분께서 우리에게 주신 성령에 의해서니라.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
