1 이러한 이유로 모든 악의와 모든 기만과 위선들과 시기들과 모든 악담들을 치워 버리고,
1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2 갓난아기들로서 말씀의 순수한 젖을 열망하라. 이는 너희로 하여금 말씀으로 자라게 하려 함이라.
2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
3 주께서 은혜로우시다는 것을 너희가 맛보았다면 그리하라.
3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4 정녕 사람들에게는 배척받았으나 하나님께는 선택받은 보배롭고 살아 있는 돌이신 그분께 나아오나니,
4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5 너희 역시 살아 있는 돌들로서, 영적인 집으로 지어지며, 예수 그리스도를 통하여 하나님께 기꺼이 받아들여질 만한 영적인 희생 제물들을 바치는 거룩한 제사장단이 되었느니라.
5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
6 이러한 이유로 그것이 “보라, 내가 택함받고 보배로운 최고 모퉁잇돌을 시-온에 두노니, 그를 믿는 자는 당혹스럽게 되지 아니하리라.” 한 성경 기록 안에도 들어 있느니라.
6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7 그러므로 믿는 너희에게 그분께서는 보배로우시나 불순종하는 자들에게는 건축자들이 배척한 돌이니, 바로 그 돌이 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되시지만,
7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8 불순종하여 말씀에 걸려 넘어지는 자들에게는, 곧 걸려 넘어지게 하는 돌이요, 실족하게 하는 반석이 되시는도다. 그들은 또한 그렇게 되도록 정해졌느니라.
8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
9 그러나 너희는 선택받은 세대요, 왕가의 제사장단이요, 거룩한 민족이요, 독특한 백성이로다. 이는 너희를 어둠에서 불러내어 자신의 놀라운 빛으로 들어가게 하신 분에 대한 찬송들을 너희로 하여금 내보이게 하려 하심이라.
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
10 과거에는 백성이 아니었으나 이제는 하나님의 백성이며, 너희가 자비를 얻어 내지 못하였으나 이제는 자비를 얻어 냈느니라.
10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11 진심 어린 사랑을 받는 자들아, 내가 타국인들과 순례자들 같은 너희에게 간청하노니, 혼을 대적하여 전쟁을 벌이는 육신의 정욕들을 멀리하라.
11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12 이방인들 사이에서 너희의 생활 방식을 정직하게 하라. 그들이 너희를 거슬러 행악자들이라고 이야기하다가도, 그들이 보게 될 너희의 선한 행위들로 인하여 감찰의 날에 그들이 하나님께 영광을 돌리도록 하려는 것이라.
12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
13 주를 위하여 사람의 모든 법령마다 스스로 복종하라. 그것이 최고 권위자로서의 왕에게든,
13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
14 행악자들의 처벌을 위하여 그리고 바르게 행하는 자들의 찬사를 위하여 그분에 의해 보내심을 받은 자들로서의 지배자들에게든 그리하라.
14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
15 이는 하나님의 뜻이 그러하기 때문이니, 너희로 하여금 바르게 행하여 어리석은 사람들의 무지를 잠잠하게 하려 함이라.
15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
16 자유로운 자들로서 너희의 자유를 악의 은폐물로 사용하지 말고 다만 하나님의 종들로서 사용하라.
16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
17 모든 사람들을 존경하라. 형제들을 사랑하라. 하나님을 두려워하라. 왕을 공경하라.
17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
18 종들아, 모든 두려움으로 너희 주인들에게 복종하라. 선하고 온화한 자들에게뿐만 아니라 까다로운 자들에게도 그리하라.
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
19 이는 만일 어떤 사람이 억울하게 수난을 당하고서도 하나님을 향한 양심을 위하여 비통함을 견딘다면 이것은 감사할 일이기 때문이라.
19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
20 그런즉 만일 너희의 잘못들로 얻어맞을 때 너희가 그것을 인내로 감수한다면 그것이 무슨 영광이 있겠느냐? 그러나 만일 너희가 바르게 행하였는데 그 일로 고통을 당할 때 너희가 그것을 인내로 감수한다면 이것은 하나님께 기꺼이 받아들여질 만한 일이라.
20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
21 이는 심지어 너희가 이 일로 부르심을 받았기 때문이니, 그리스도께서도 우리를 위하여 수난을 겪으시어 우리에게 본보기를 남기심으로써 너희로 하여금 그분의 발자취들을 따라오도록 하셨기 때문이라.
21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22 그분께서는 죄를 짓지 아니하셨고, 그분의 입안에서는 기만도 발견되지 아니하였도다.
22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23 그분께서는 자신이 욕을 들을 때 맞대어 욕하지 아니하셨느니라. 그분께서 수난을 겪으셨을 때 자신은 위협하지 아니하셨고 다만 의롭게 심판하시는 분께 자신을 맡기셨느니라.
23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
24 그분께서 친히 나무에 달린 자기 자신의 몸으로 우리의 죄들을 담당하셨으니, 죄들에 죽은 우리가 의에는 살게 하려 하심이라. 그분께서 맞으신 채찍들로 인하여 너희가 치유되었느니라.
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
25 이는 너희가 길 잃은 양들과 같았으나 이제는 너희 혼들의 목자와 감독에게 되돌아왔기 때문이라.
25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
