1 멍에 아래에 있는 종들은 다 자기 자신들의 주인들을 전적으로 존경하기에 합당한 자들로 여기도록 하라. 이는 하나님의 이름과 그분의 교리가 모독받지 않게 하려 함이라.
1 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.
2 그런즉 믿는 주인들을 둔 자들은 그들로 하여금 주인들을 멸시하지 않도록 하라. 이는 그들이 형제들이기 때문이라. 그보다는 오히려 그들을 섬기라. 이는 그들이 신실하고 사랑받으며 은택의 동참자들이기 때문이라. 이러한 것들을 가르치고 권면하라.
2 And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
3 만일 어떤 사람이 다르게 가르치고 건전한 말씀들, 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 말씀들과 경건에 따른 교리에 동조하지 아니하면,
3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 그는 교만하여 아무것도 모르면서 오히려 말씀들에 대한 의문들과 분쟁들만 좋아하는 자니, 이런 것들로부터 시기와 분쟁과 욕설들과 악한 추측들이 나오느니라.
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5 부패한 생각들을 가지고 진리가 결여된 채 이득이 경건이라고 생각하는 사람들에게서 비뚤어진 말다툼들이 나오느니라. 그러한 자들로부터 너 자신은 빠져나오라.
5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
6 그러나 만족함을 겸비한 경건이야말로 크나큰 이득이니라.
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 이는 우리가 이 세상으로 아무것도 가져오지 않았고 우리가 아무것도 가지고 나갈 수 없음이 확실하기 때문이라.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8 그런즉 먹을 것과 입을 것이 있으니, 우리가 그것들로 만족하자.
8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
9 그러나 부유하게 되고자 바라는 자들은 시험과 올무에 빠지고, 어리석고 해로운 많은 정욕들에 빠지나니, 그것들은 사람들을 멸망과 파멸 속에 잠기게 하느니라.
9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10 이는 돈을 사랑함이 모든 악의 뿌리이기 때문이라. 어떤 이들은 자신들이 돈을 탐내는 동안 믿음에서 떠나 잘못을 범하였고 많은 슬픔들로 자신들을 찔렀도다.
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
11 그러나 오 하나님의 사람아, 너는 이런 것들을 피하라. 그리고 의와 경건과 믿음과 사랑과 인내와 온유를 따르라.
11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
12 믿음의 훌륭한 싸움을 싸우라. 영생을 붙잡으라. 그것으로 너도 부르심을 받았으며 많은 증인들 앞에서 선한 고백으로 고백하였느니라.
12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
13 모든 것들을 되살아나게 하시는 하나님의 목전과, 본디오 빌라도 앞에서 선한 고백으로 증거하신 그리스도 예수 앞에서 내가 너에게 명하노니,
13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;
14 너는 우리 주 예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때까지 흠 없고 나무랄 것 없이 이 명령을 지키라.
14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
15 그분께서 그분의 때들에 자신의 나타나심을 보이시리니, 그분께서는 찬양받으시는 유일하신 최고 통치자시요, 만왕의 왕이시요, 만주의 주시로다.
15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16 오로지 그분만이 불멸함을 소유하셨으며 아무도 접근할 수 없는 빛 속에 거하시느니라. 아무도 그분을 보지 못하였고 볼 수도 없으니, 그분께 존귀와 영원한 권능이 있기를 기원하노라. 아멘.
16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
17 이 세상에서 부유한 자들에게 명하여 그들로 하여금 높아지려는 생각을 품지 말고, 불확실한 재물들을 신뢰하지도 말며, 다만 살아 계신 하나님을 신뢰하게 하라. 그분은 우리에게 모든 것들을 부요하게 주시어 향유하게 하는 분이시라.
17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
18 이는 그들로 하여금 선을 행하고, 자원하여 베풀며, 기꺼이 나눠 주게 하여 선한 행위들에 부요하게 되도록 하려 함이라.
18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
19 그들로 하여금 다가올 때를 대비하여 자신들을 위한 좋은 기초를 쌓아 올리게 하라. 이는 그들로 하여금 영생을 붙잡게 하려 함이라.
19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
20 오, 디모데야, 네가 신뢰를 받아 너에게 맡겨진 것을 지키라. 속되고 헛된 말장난들과 과학이라고 거짓되이 불리는 반론들을 피하라.
20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
21 그것을 공언하는 어떤 이들이 믿음에 관하여 정도를 벗어났느니라. 너에게 은혜가 있기를 기원하노라. 아멘.
21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.
22 ¶ 디모데에게 보내는 첫 번째 서신이 프루기아 파카티아나에서 제일가는 도시인 라오디케아에서 기록되었다.
