1 나의 형제들아, 많은 스승들이 되지 말라. 이는 우리가 더 큰 정죄를 받을 것을 알고 있기 때문이라.
1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2 이는 우리가 모두 많은 것들에 있어서 범죄하기 때문이라. 누구든지 말로 범죄하지 않는다면 바로 그 사람은 완전한 사람이요, 능히 온몸도 제어할 수 있느니라.
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
3 보라, 말들이 우리에게 순종하게 하려고 우리는 말들의 입에 재갈들을 물리느니라. 그리하여 우리는 그들의 몸 전체의 방향을 전환하느니라.
3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 선박들도 보라. 비록 그것들이 그토록 거대하고, 맹렬한 바람들에 끌려간다 할지라도 여전히 그것들은 아주 작은 키 손잡이로 사공이 내키는 곳 어디로든 방향을 전환하느니라.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 바로 그와 같이 혀는 작은 지체이나 커다란 일들을 자랑하느니라. 보라, 작은 불이 얼마나 커다란 물체를 태우는가!
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 그런즉 혀는 불이요, 죄악의 세상이라. 우리 지체들 가운데 있는 혀가 그와 같으니, 그것은 온몸을 더럽히며 본성의 체계에 불을 붙이느니라. 그러고 나서 그것은 지옥의 불 위에서 태워지느니라.
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7 이는 모든 종류의 짐승들과 모든 종류의 새들과 모든 종류의 뱀들과 모든 종류의 바다 안에 있는 것들이 저마다 길들여졌으며, 인간들에게 길들여져 왔기 때문이라.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 그러나 혀는 아무도 길들일 수 없느니라. 그것은 다스릴 수 없는 하나의 악이요, 죽이는 독으로 가득하도다.
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 그것으로 우리가 하나님, 곧 아버지를 찬양하는도다. 또 그것으로 우리가 하나님의 모습을 따라 만들어지는 사람들을 저주하느니라.
9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10 동일한 입에서 찬양과 저주가 나오는도다. 나의 형제들아, 이런 것들은 응당 그렇게 되어서는 아니 되느니라.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 샘터가 같은 곳에서 단물과 쓴 물을 내보내느냐?
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12 나의 형제들아, 무화과나무가 올리브 과실들을 맺을 수 있겠느냐? 또는 포도나무가 무화과들을 맺을 수 있겠느냐? 그와 같이 짠물과 민물을 둘 다 낼 수 있는 원천은 없느니라.
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
13 너희 가운데 지식으로 갖추어진 지혜로운 사람이 누구냐? 그는 선한 생활 방식에서 나오는 자기 행위들을 지혜의 온유함과 함께 보일지니라.
13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
14 그러나 만일 너희가 너희의 마음속에 신랄한 시기와 분쟁을 지니고 있다면 자랑하지 말고 진리를 거슬러 거짓말하지 말라.
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
15 이런 지혜는 위로부터 내려오는 것이 아니요, 오히려 땅에 속하고 육욕적이며 마귀적인 것이라.
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
16 이는 시기와 분쟁이 있는 곳에는 혼란과 온갖 악한 행위가 있기 때문이라.
16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
17 그러나 위로부터 난 지혜는 첫째로 순수하며, 다음은 화평하고, 온화하며, 간청을 잘 들어주고, 자비와 선한 열매들로 가득하며, 편파적이지 않고, 위선이 없느니라.
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18 그런즉 의의 열매는 화평하게 하는 자들의 화평 안에 뿌려졌느니라.
18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
