1 이후에 눈의 아들 여호수아가 싯팀에서 두 사람을 비밀리에 정탐하도록 보내며 말하기를, “가서 그 지역, 곧 예리코를 시찰하라.” 하였더라. 그러자 그들이 가서 라합이라는 이름으로 불리는 창녀의 집 안으로 들어갔고 거기서 묵었더라.
1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.
2 이윽고 그것이 예리코 왕에게 알려지며 말하기를, “보소서, 오늘 밤 이스라엘 자녀들에 속한 사람들이 이 나라를 정찰하러 여기로 왔나이다.” 하였더라.
2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.
3 이에 예리코 왕이 라합에게 사람들을 보내며 말하기를, “너에게로 온 사람들, 곧 너의 집 안으로 들어간 자들을 데리고 나오라. 이는 그들이 온 나라를 정찰하러 왔기 때문이라.” 하였더라.
3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.
4 그 여인이 그 두 사람을 이동시켰고 그들을 숨기고 나서 이와 같이 말하였더라. “사람들이 제게 왔었으나 그들이 어디에서 왔는지 제가 몰랐나이다.
4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:
5 그리고 어두워져서 성문을 닫을 때쯤 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그 사람들이 나갔으나 저는 그 사람들이 어디로 갔는지 모르나이다. 속히 그들을 추격하소서. 이는 당신들이 그들을 따라잡을 것이기 때문이니이다.”
5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.
6 한편 그녀는 이미 그들을 집의 지붕으로 데리고 올라가서 자신이 지붕 위에 가지런히 쌓아 놓은 아마풀의 줄기들로 그들을 숨겨 주었었더라.
6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
7 그리하여 그 사람들은 요르단에 이르는 길로 그들을 추격하여 여울들에 이르렀더라. 그리고 그들을 추격하는 자들이 나가자마자 그들은 성문을 닫았더라.
7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
8 ¶ 그러고 나서 그들이 눕기 전에 그녀가 지붕 위에 있는 그들에게 올라갔더라.
8 ¶ And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;
9 그리고 그녀가 그 사람들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “주께서 당신들에게 이 지역을 주셨다는 것과 당신들에 대한 공포가 저희 위에 떨어졌다는 것과 이 지역의 모든 거주자들이 당신들로 인하여 낙담하였다는 것을 제가 아나이다.
9 And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.
10 이는 당신들이 이집트에서 나왔을 때 주께서 당신들을 위하여 어떻게 홍해 물을 말려 버리셨는지와 당신들이 요르단 건너편에 있던 아모리족들의 두 왕들, 곧 당신들이 모조리 멸한 시혼과 옥에게 무엇을 하였는지를 저희가 들었기 때문이니이다.
10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
11 그런즉 저희가 이것들을 듣자마자 당신들로 인하여 저희의 마음이 녹았으며 어떤 사람에게도 더 이상 용기가 남아 있지 아니하였나이다. 이는 주 당신들의 하나님, 그분께서는 위로는 하늘에 계신 하나님이시요, 아래로는 땅에 계신 하나님이시기 때문이니이다.
11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
12 그러므로 이제 제가 당신들께 간구하오니, 제가 당신들께 친절을 보였은즉 제게 주를 두고 맹세하사 당신들도 제 아버지의 집에 친절을 보이시어 제게 진실한 징표를 주소서.
12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token:
13 그런즉 당신들께서 제 아버지와 제 어머니와 제 형제들과 제 자매들과 그들에게 속한 모든 자를 살려 두시고, 저희의 생명들을 죽음으로부터 구출하여 주소서.”
13 And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
14 이에 그 사람들이 그녀에게 대답하였더라. “만일 너희가 우리의 이 임무를 발설하지 않는다면 우리의 생명으로 너희의 생명을 대신할 것이라. 그런즉 주께서 우리에게 이 지역을 주실 때 이러한 일이 일어나리니, 곧 우리가 너를 친절하고 진실하게 대하겠노라.”
14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.
15 그때 그녀가 창문을 통하여 끈으로 그들을 내리니라. 이는 그녀의 집이 마을의 성벽 위에 있었고 그녀가 성벽 위에 거하였기 때문이라.
15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.
16 그러면서 그녀가 그들에게 말하기를, “추격자들이 당신들을 만나지 않도록 당신들께서는 산으로 가소서. 그리고 추격자들이 되돌아올 때까지 거기서 삼 일 동안 당신들의 몸을 숨기소서. 그러고 난 후에는 당신들께서 당신들의 길을 갈 수 있으리이다.” 하였더라.
16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.
17 그러자 그 사람들이 그녀에게 말하기를, “네가 우리에게 맹세하게 한 너의 이 맹세에 관하여 우리가 비난받을 일이 없으리라.
17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.
18 보라, 우리가 이 지역 가운데로 들어올 때 네가 우리를 아래로 내린 창문에다 너는 주홍색 실로 된 이 줄을 묶어 둘지니라. 그리고 너는 너의 아버지와 너의 어머니와 너의 형제들과 너의 아버지 집안 사람들을 모두 너의 집으로 데려올지니라.
18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee.
19 그런즉 이러한 일이 있을지니, 누구든지 너의 집 문들에서 거리로 나가는 자는 그의 피가 그의 머리 위에 있을 것이요, 우리는 무죄하리라. 그리고 너와 함께 그 집 안에 있는 자가 누구든지 만일 어떤 손이 그의 위에 임한다면 그의 피가 우리의 머리 위에 있으리라.
19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.
20 그런데 만일 네가 우리의 이 임무를 발설한다면 그때 우리는 네가 우리로 하여금 맹세하게 하였던 너의 맹세에서 벗어나리라.”
20 And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.
21 그러자 그녀가 말하기를, “당신들의 말씀들대로 그것이 그렇게 되게 하소서.” 하였더라. 그러고 나서 그녀가 그들을 돌려보내자 그들이 떠났더라. 그리고 그녀는 창문에다 주홍색의 줄을 묶어 두었더라.
21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.
22 그리고 그들이 가서 산에 이르렀으니, 추격자들이 되돌아갈 때까지 삼 일 동안 거기에 거하였더라. 그런즉 추격자들이 모든 길에 걸쳐 그들을 찾았으나 그들을 발견하지 못하였더라.
22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
23 그렇게 하여 그 두 사람이 귀환하며 산에서 내려와 넘어왔으니, 눈의 아들 여호수아에게 와서 자신들에게 벌어진 모든 것들을 그에게 알렸더라.
23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:
24 그러면서 그들이 여호수아에게 말하기를, “참으로 주께서 그 지역 전체를 저희의 손안에 넘기셨나이다. 이는 심지어 그 지방의 모든 거주자들조차 저희로 인해 낙담하여 있기 때문이니이다.” 하였더라.
24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.
