1 이제 내가 말하노라. “상속자인 그가 아이에 불과할 때는 비록 그가 모든 것의 소유주일지라도 종과 아무것도 다르지 않으니라.

1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;

2 다만 아버지가 지정한 때까지 가정 교사들과 보호자들 아래에 있느니라.”

2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.

3 바로 이처럼 우리가 아이들이었을 때 우리는 세상의 초등 원리들 아래에서 속박되어 있었느니라.

3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:

4 그러나 그때의 충만함이 이르자 하나님께서 자신의 아들을 파송하셨으니, 여자에게서 조성되셨고, 율법 아래에서 조성되셨도다.

4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

5 이는 율법 아래에 있던 자들을 구속하려 하심이요, 우리로 하여금 아들들로서 입양을 받게 하려 하심이라.

5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6 그런즉 너희가 아들들이므로 하나님께서 자신의 아들의 영을 너희의 마음속으로 보내시어 ‘아바, 아버지’라고 부르짖게 하셨느니라.

6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7 이런 이유로 너는 더 이상 종이 아니요, 오히려 아들이라. 그리고 만일 아들이면 그때는 그리스도를 통한 하나님의 상속자니라.

7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

8 하지만 너희가 하나님을 몰랐던 그때에는 너희가 본질상 전혀 신들이 아닌 것들을 섬겼느니라.

8 Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.

9 그러나 이제 너희가 하나님을 안 후에, 더 정확히 말하자면, 너희가 하나님께 알려진 후에, 어찌 너희가 약하고 비천한 초등 원리들로 돌아가서 거기에 속박되기를 다시 열망하느냐?

9 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

10 너희가 날들과 달들과 때들과 해들을 준수하는도다.

10 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.

11 내가 너희에 대하여 우려하는 것은 내가 너희에게 수고를 들여 온 것이 헛될까 함이라.

11 I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.

12 형제들아, 내가 너희에게 간청하노니 나와 같이 되라. 이는 나도 너희와 같이 되었기 때문이라. 너희는 조금도 나에게 해를 끼친 적이 없도다.

12 Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.

13 내가 처음에 육체의 병약함을 통하여 어떻게 너희에게 복음을 선포하였는지 너희가 아느니라.

13 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.

14 그리고 내 육체에 있던 나의 시험을 너희는 멸시하지도 거절하지도 아니하였으며 도리어 나를 하나님의 천사처럼, 곧 그리스도 예수처럼 받아주었도다.

14 And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

15 그렇다면 너희가 말한 그 복이 어디 있느냐? 이는 내가 너희에게 확증함이니, 만일 그것이 가능하였더라면 너희는 너희 자신의 눈이라도 뽑아내어 나에게 그것들을 주었을 것이기 때문이라.

15 Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.

16 그러므로 내가 너희에게 진리를 전함으로 인하여 내가 너희의 원수가 되었느냐?

16 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

17 그들은 너희에게 열심히 애정을 쏟으나 바람직하지 아니하도다. 진정 그들은 너희로 하여금 그들에게 애정을 쏟게 하려고 너희를 진리로부터 차단하려 하는도다.

17 They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.

18 그러나 내가 너희와 함께 있을 때뿐만 아니라, 언제든지 좋은 것에 열심히 애정을 쏟게 되는 것은 좋은 일이라.

18 But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.

19 나의 어린 자녀들아, 그리스도께서 너희 안에 형성되시기까지 내가 너희로 인하여 또다시 산고를 치르노라.

19 My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,

20 내가 이제라도 너희와 함께 있으면서 내 어조를 바꾸기를 간절히 바라느니라. 이는 내가 너희에 대하여 의심을 하고 있기 때문이라.

20 I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.

21 율법 아래 있기를 열망하는 너희들아, 내게 말해 보라. 너희는 율법을 듣지 아니하느냐?

21 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

22 이는 기록되기를, “아브라함에게 두 아들이 있었는데 하나는 노예로 속박된 여인에게서 났고 다른 하나는 자유로운 여인에게서 났도다.” 하기 때문이라.

22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

23 그러나 여자 노예에게서 난 자는 육신을 따라 태어났으나 자유로운 여인에게서 난 자는 약속에 의하여 태어났느니라.

23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

24 이것들은 풍유니라. 이는 이들이 두 언약들이기 때문이라. 시나이산에서 나온 이는 속박을 불러일으키는 자니, 곧 아갈¹이라.

24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

25 이는 이 아갈이 아라비아에 있는 시나이산이요, 지금 있는 예루살렘에 대응하니, 그녀의 자녀들과 함께 속박되어 있기 때문이라.

25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

26 그러나 위에 있는 예루살렘은 자유로우니, 그것은 우리 모두의 어머니라.

26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

27 이는 기록되기를, “너, 출산하지 못하는 불임인 자여, 기뻐하라. 너 산고를 치르지 못하는 자여, 환호하고 소리를 지르라. 이는 고독한 이가 한 남편을 둔 그녀보다 훨씬 더 많은 자녀들을 두기 때문이라.” 하기 때문이라.

27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.

28 형제들아, 이제 우리는 이삭이 그랬던 것처럼 약속의 자녀들이라.

28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

29 그러나 그때 육신을 따라 태어난 자가 성령을 따라 태어난 자를 박해했던 것같이 지금도 그러하도다.

29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

30 그럼에도 불구하고 성경 기록이 무엇이라고 말씀하시느냐? “그 여자 노예와 그녀의 아들을 쫓아내라. 이는 그 여자 노예의 아들은 그 자유로운 여인의 아들과 함께 상속자가 되지 못할 것이기 때문이라.” 하시니라.

30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

31 형제들아, 그렇기에 우리는 그 여자 노예의 자녀들이 아니요, 오히려 그 자유로운 자의 자녀들이라.

31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
