1 이제 믿음은 소망되는 것들의 실체요, 보이지 않는 것들의 증명이로다.
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2 이는 그것으로 장로들이 좋은 평판을 얻어 냈기 때문이라.
2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.
3 믿음을 통해 우리는 하나님의 말씀에 의하여 세상들이 지어졌음을 이해하나니, 그런즉 보이는 것들은 나타나는 것들로 만들어지지 아니하였느니라.
3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
4 믿음으로 아벨은 하나님께 카인보다 더 훌륭한 희생 제물을 바쳤으니, 그것으로 그는 자신이 의롭다는 증거를 얻어 냈으며, 하나님께서 그의 예물들에 관하여 증언하셨느니라. 그런즉 그가 죽었으나 믿음으로 아직 말하고 있느니라.
4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
5 믿음으로 에녹은 옮겨졌으니, 그로 하여금 죽음을 보지 않게 하려 함이라. 그런즉 그가 발견되지 아니하였으니, 하나님께서 그를 옮기신 까닭이라. 이는 그가 옮겨지기 전에 그에게는 이러한 증언이 있었기 때문이니, 곧 그가 하나님을 기쁘게 해 드렸다는 것이라.
5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
6 반면에 믿음 없이는 하나님을 기쁘게 해 드리는 것이 불가능하니라. 이는 하나님께로 오는 자는 그분께서 존재하신다는 것과 그분께서 자신을 부지런히 찾는 자들에게 보상하시는 분이심을 반드시 믿어야만 하기 때문이라.
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
7 믿음으로 노아는 아직 보이지 않은 것들에 관하여 하나님의 경고를 받고 두려움으로 움직였으며 방주를 예비하여 자기 집이 구원에 이르게 하였느니라. 그것으로 그는 세상을 정죄하였고 믿음에 의한 의의 상속인이 되었느니라.
7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
8 믿음으로 아브라함은 그가 장차 유산으로 받게 될 장소를 향하여 떠나가라는 부르심을 자신이 받았을 때 순종하였느니라. 그리하여 그가 자신이 어디로 가야 하는지도 모른 채 떠나갔느니라.
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9 믿음으로 그는 자신과 더불어 그 동일한 약속의 상속인들인 이삭과 야곱과 함께 장막들 안에 거하면서 마치 낯선 나라에 있는 것처럼 약속의 지역 가운데서 체류하였느니라.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10 이는 그가 기초들이 있는 도성을 고대하였기 때문이니, 그것의 건축자와 조성자는 하나님이시니라.
10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11 믿음을 통하여 사-라 또한 스스로 씨를 잉태할 힘을 받았고 그녀는 나이가 지났을 때도 한 아이를 해산하였으니, 그녀가 약속하신 분을 신실하시다고 판단하였기 때문이라.
11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
12 그러므로 심지어 마치 죽은 자와 다름없던 한 사람인 그에게서 창공에 있는 허다한 수의 별들과 해안 기슭에 있는 무수한 모래같이, 이처럼 많은 이들이 나왔느니라.
12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
13 이들 모두가 그 약속하신 것들을 받지 못한 채 믿음 안에서 죽었으나 아득히 떨어져 있는 그것들을 보았고 그것들에 대해 확신하게 되었으며 그것들을 기꺼이 받아들였고, 자신들이 지상에서는 타국인들이요, 순례자들이었음을 고백하였느니라.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
14 이는 그러한 것들을 말하는 자들은 자신들이 어떤 본향을 찾고 있음을 분명하게 선언하기 때문이라.
14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15 그런즉 참으로 만일 그들이 자기들이 나온 본향에 관하여 유념하였다면 그들은 되돌아갈 기회가 있었으리라.
15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
16 그러나 이제 그들은 더 좋은 본향을 사모하니, 곧 하늘에 있는 본향이로다. 이런 이유로 하나님께서는 그들의 하나님이라 불리는 것을 부끄러워하지 아니하시느니라. 이는 그분께서 그들을 위하여 한 도성을 예비하셨기 때문이라.
16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
17 믿음으로 아브라함은 그가 시련을 받았을 때 이삭을 바쳤느니라. 그리하여 그 약속들을 받은 그가 자신의 독생자를 바친 것이라.
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
18 그에 관하여 이와 같은 말씀이 있었느니라. “이삭 안에서 너의 씨가 부름을 받으리라.”
18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
19 하나님께서 심지어 죽은 자들로부터 그를 일으키실 수 있다고 여겼으므로, 아브라함 또한 이삭을 죽은 자들로부터 하나의 모형으로 받은 것이라.
19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
20 믿음으로 이삭은 다가올 것들에 관하여 야곱과 에서에게 축복하였느니라.
20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
21 믿음으로 야곱은 자신이 죽어갈 때 요셉의 아들들 모두에게 축복하였으며, 자신의 지팡이 윗부분에 기댄 채 경배하였느니라.
21 By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
22 믿음으로 요셉은 자신이 죽을 때 이스라엘 자녀들이 떠나는 것에 관하여 언급하였으며 자신의 뼈들에 관하여 명령을 주었느니라.
22 By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
23 믿음으로 모세는 자신이 태어났을 때 그의 부모에 의해서 삼 개월간 숨겨졌으니, 그들이 그가 특출한 아이인 것을 보았기 때문이라. 그런즉 그들은 왕의 명령을 무서워하지 아니하였느니라.
23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.
24 믿음으로 모세는 자신이 나이가 들었을 때 파라오의 딸의 아들이라 불리기를 거부하였느니라.
24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
25 그는 한동안 죄의 쾌락들을 즐기는 것보다는 도리어 하나님의 백성과 함께 고난을 겪는 것을 선택하였느니라.
25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
26 그는 그리스도의 치욕을 이집트의 보물들보다 더 크나큰 재물들로 여겼느니라. 이는 그가 그 보상의 삯을 소중히 여겼기 때문이라.
26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
27 믿음으로 그는 왕의 격노를 두려워하지 않고 이집트를 저버렸느니라. 이는 그가 볼 수 없는 그분을 보는 것같이 견디었기 때문이라.
27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
28 믿음을 통하여 그는 유월절과 피를 뿌리는 것을 지켰으니, 첫 태생들을 멸망시킨 자가 그들을 건드리지 못하게 하려 함이라.
28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
29 믿음으로 그들은 마른 땅으로 가는 것처럼 홍해를 통과하였느니라. 그것을 해 보려고 시도한 이집트인들은 물에 빠져 죽었느니라.
29 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.
30 믿음으로 예리코의 성벽들이 칠 일간 에워싸인 뒤에 그것들이 무너져 내렸느니라.
30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.
31 믿음으로 창녀 라합이 정탐꾼들을 화평으로 영접하였을 때 그녀는 믿지 않은 자들과 더불어 멸망하지 아니하였느니라.
31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.
32 그런즉 내가 무슨 말을 더 하겠느냐? 이는 기드-온과 바락과 삼손과 입-다에 대해서 또한 다윗과 사무엘과 예언자들에 대해서 말한다면 나에게 시간이 모자랄 것이기 때문이라.
32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
33 그들은 믿음을 통하여 왕국들을 정복하였고 의를 행사하였으며 약속하신 것들을 얻어 냈고 사자들의 입을 봉하였으며
33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34 격렬한 불을 꺼뜨렸고, 칼날에서 탈출하였으며, 연약함 가운데서 강하게 되었고, 싸움에서 용맹해졌으며, 외지인들로 이루어진 군사들을 패주시켰느니라.
34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
35 여자들은 다시 생명으로 일으켜진, 자신들의 죽은 자들을 받기도 하였으며, 다른 이들은 고문을 당하면서도 구출되는 것을 받아들이지 않았으니, 그들이 더 좋은 부활을 얻어 내려 함이라.
35 Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
36 또 다른 이들은 진정 잔인한 조롱들과 채찍으로 맞는 일들로 정련을 받았으며 더욱이 속박들과 투옥들의 정련까지 받았느니라.
36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
37 그들은 돌로 맞아 죽었고, 그들은 톱에 잘려 나가기도 했으며, 시험을 당하였고, 칼로 살해당하였느니라. 그들은 양가죽들과 염소 가죽들을 쓴 채 이리저리 유랑하면서 궁핍하였고, 고난을 받았으며, 심한 고통을 당하였느니라.
37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
38 (세상은 그들에게 합당하지 아니하였느니라.) 그들은 사막들 가운데서와 산들 속에서와 땅의 토굴들과 동굴들 속에서 유랑하였느니라.
38 (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
39 그리하여 이들 모두가 믿음을 통하여 좋은 평판을 얻어 냈으면서도 그 약속하신 것을 받지는 못하였느니라.
39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
40 하나님께서 우리를 위하여 더 좋은 어떤 것을 제공하셨으니, 그들로 하여금 우리 없이는 완전하게 되지 못하게 하려 하심이라.
40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
