1 이제 나 바울은 그리스도의 온유함과 온화함으로 직접 너희에게 간청하노니, 너희 가운데 대면하고 있을 때는 내가 천하나 떨어져 있을 때는 너희를 향해 담대하니라.
1 Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:
2 그러나 내가 너희에게 간청하노니, 내가 그 확신으로 대면할 때면 나로 하여금 담대해지지 않게 하라. 그렇지만 우리가 마치 육신을 따라 살아가는 것인 양 우리에 대해 생각하는 어떤 이들에 대해서는 내가 그런 확신으로 담대해져야겠다고 생각하노라.
2 But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
3 이는 비록 우리가 육신 안에서 살아간다 할지라도 우리가 육신을 따라 전쟁하는 것은 아니기 때문이라.
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4 (이는 우리의 전쟁 무기들은 육신에 속하지 아니하고 다만 하나님을 통해 막강하여 강한 요새들을 무너뜨리기 때문이라.)
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5 우리는 상상들과, 하나님의 지식을 대적하여 스스로를 크게 높인 모든 높은 것을 저마다 허물어뜨리며, 모든 생각마다 사로잡아 그리스도께 순종하게 하고,
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6 너희의 순종이 이루어질 때 모든 불순종을 응징할 준비를 하고 있도다.
6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
7 너희는 겉모습을 따라 사물들을 바라보느냐? 만일 어떤 사람이 자신이 그리스도께 속해 있다고 스스로를 신뢰하고 있다면 그로 하여금 자신에 관하여 이것도 재고해 보게 하라. 즉, 그가 그리스도께 속해 있는 것같이 우리도 그렇게 그리스도께 속해 있다는 것이라.
7 Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.
8 이는 내가 우리의 권위에 관하여 조금 더 자랑한다 해도 그것은 주께서 세움을 위해 우리에게 주신 것이요, 너희의 멸망을 위해 주신 것이 아니기 때문이니, 나는 부끄러워하지 아니하리라.
8 For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
9 이는 마치 내가 편지들로 너희를 무섭게 하려는 것처럼 보이지 않게 하려 함이라.
9 That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.
10 이는 그들이 말하기를, “그의 편지들로 말하자면 그것들은 무게가 있고 능력이 있으나 몸소 대면하면 그는 약하고 그의 언변은 한심하도다.” 하기 때문이라.
10 For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
11 그러한 자로 하여금 이렇게 생각하게 할지니, 우리가 떠나 있을 때 편지들을 통하여 우리가 하는 말이 또한 우리가 대면하고 있을 때 우리가 하는 행동과 같으리라는 것이라.
11 Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
12 이는 우리가 자기 자신들을 추천하는 어떤 자들과 감히 우리를 같은 구성원이 되게 하거나 그들과 우리를 비교하지 아니하기 때문이라. 그러나 그들은 자기들끼리 재고 자기들끼리 비교하고 있으니, 지혜롭지 아니하도다.
12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
13 그러나 우리는 우리의 정도를 넘어서는 것들을 자랑하지 아니하겠고, 오직 하나님께서 우리에게 나눠주신 규칙의 정도에 따라 하리니, 그 정도는 너희에게까지 도달한 것이라.
13 But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
14 이는 마치 우리가 너희에게 도달하지 않은 것인 양 우리의 정도를 넘어서 우리 자신을 과장하지 않기 때문이니, 우리가 그리스도의 복음을 선포함으로 너희에게까지 이르렀기 때문이라.
14 For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:
15 우리의 정도를 넘는 것들을 자랑하지 아니하니, 즉 다른 사람들이 수고한 것들에 속한 것이라. 그러나 소망을 가지는 것은 너희의 믿음이 늘어날 때면 우리의 규칙에 따라 너희를 통하여 우리가 넘치게 확장되리라는 것이라.
15 Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
16 너희를 넘어선 구역들에서 복음을 선포하려는 것이지, 다른 사람의 경계선 내에서 쉽게 우리 손에 들어오게 된 것들을 자랑하려는 것이 아니니라.
16 To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.
17 그러나 자랑하는 자, 그는 주를 자랑할지어다.
17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
18 이는 스스로 추천하는 자가 인정받는 것이 아니라 오직 주께서 추천하시는 자가 인정받기 때문이라.
18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
