1 벨샤잘왕이 자신의 고관들 일천 명에게 성대한 잔치를 베풀고 그 일천 명 앞에서 포도주를 마셨더라.

Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

2 벨샤잘은 자신이 포도주를 맛보는 동안 명령하여 그의 아버지 네부카드네자르가 예루살렘 안에 있던 성전에서 꺼내 온 금과 은으로 된 기물들을 가져오라고 하였더라. 이것은 왕과 그의 통치자들과 그의 아내들과 그의 후궁들이 그 안에 포도주를 담아 마시려 함이었더라.

Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.

3 그때 그들이 예루살렘에 있던 하나님의 집의 성전에서 꺼내 온 금 기물들을 가져왔더라. 그리고 왕과 그의 통치자들과 그의 아내들과 그의 후궁들이 그것들 안에 포도주를 담아 마셨더라.

Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

4 그들이 포도주를 마시고 나서 금으로 만든 신들과 은으로 만든 신들과 놋으로 만든 신들과 철로 만든 신들과 나무토막으로 만든 신들과 돌로 만든 신들을 찬송하였더라.

They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

5 ¶ 바로 그 시각에 한 사람 손의 손가락들이 나와서 등잔대 맞은편이자 왕의 궁전의 회칠한 벽에 글을 쓰는데, 글을 쓰는 그 손의 일부분을 왕이 목격하였더라.

¶ In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

6 그때 왕의 얼굴이 변하였고 그의 생각들이 그를 곤욕스럽게 하였으니, 그의 허리의 관절들이 풀렸고 그의 두 무릎이 서로 부딪쳤더라.

Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

7 왕이 크게 소리지르며 점성술사들과 칼데아인들과 점쟁이들을 안으로 들였더라. 그리하여 왕이 바빌론의 지혜로운 사람들에게 일러 말하기를, “누구든지 이 글귀를 읽고 그것의 해석을 나에게 제시하는 자는 주홍색 옷이 입혀질 것이요, 금목걸이가 그의 목 주변에 걸릴 것이요, 왕국 안에서 셋째 치리자가 될 것이라.” 하였더라.

The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

8 그때 왕의 모든 지혜로운 사람들이 안으로 들어왔더라. 그러나 그들은 그 글귀를 읽을 줄 몰랐고 왕에게 그것의 해석을 알려 주지도 못하였더라.

Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

9 그때 벨샤잘왕이 커다란 근심에 빠졌고 그의 안에 있는 그의 얼굴도 변하였으니, 그의 고관들도 깜짝 놀랐더라.

Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.

10 ¶ 이때 태후가 왕과 그의 영주들의 말들로 인하여 연회의 집으로 들어왔더라. 그리하여 태후가 이같이 일러 말하였더라. “오, 왕이여, 영원토록 사소서. 당신의 생각들이 당신을 곤욕스럽게 만들지 못하게 하시고 당신의 얼굴도 변하지 못하게 하소서.

Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:

11 당신의 왕국에는 한 사람이 있는데 그의 안에는 거룩한 신들의 영이 있나이다. 그런즉 당신의 부친의 날들에 그의 안에서 빛과 명철과, 신들의 지혜 같은 지혜가 발견되었나이다. 내가 말하나니, 당신의 부왕이신 네부카드네자르왕, 곧 당신의 아버지께서는 그를 마술사들과 점성술사들과 칼데아인들과 점쟁이들의 통솔자로 삼으셨나이다.

There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

12 바로 그 다니엘에게서 탁월한 영과, 지식과, 명철과, 꿈들을 해석함과, 어려운 문장을 해설함과, 의문들을 해소함이 발견되었던 고로, 선왕께서는 그에게 벨트샤잘이라는 이름을 부여하셨나이다. 이제 다니엘로 하여금 부름을 받게 하소서. 그리하면 그가 그 해석을 제시할 것이니이다.”

Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.

13 그때 다니엘이 왕 앞으로 들어오도록 인도되었더라. 이윽고 왕이 다니엘에게 이같이 일러 말하였더라. “네가 나의 부왕께서 유대인 거주 지역에서 데려온 유다의 포로로 잡혀 갔던 자들의 자녀들에 속하는 그 다니엘이냐?

Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

14 내가 너에 관하여 정확히 들었으니, 너의 안에는 신들의 영이 있으며, 빛과 명철과 탁월한 지혜가 너의 안에서 발견된다고 하는도다.

I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.

15 그리고 이제 지혜로운 사람들과 점성술사들이 내 앞으로 인도되었으니, 그들이 이 글귀를 읽고 나에게 그것의 해석을 알리고자 함이라. 그러나 그들은 그것의 해석을 제시할 수 없었노라.

And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:

16 그러다가 내가 너에 관하여 들었으니, 너는 해석들을 하고 의문들을 해소할 수 있다고 하는구나. 이제 만일 네가 그 글귀를 읽을 수 있고 그것의 해석을 나에게 알려 줄 수 있다면 너는 주홍색 옷으로 입혀질 것이요, 너의 목 주변에 금목걸이가 걸릴 것이요, 왕국 안에서 셋째 치리자가 될 것이라.”

And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

17 ¶ 그때 다니엘이 왕 앞에서 대답하여 이같이 말하였더라. “당신의 선물들은 당신께 돌아가게 하시고 당신의 보상들은 다른 이들에게 주소서. 그럼에도 제가 왕께 그 글귀를 읽어 드리고 그 해석을 왕께 알게 하겠나이다.

¶ Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

18 오, 왕이신 당신이여, 지극히 높으신 하나님께서 당신의 부친 네부카드네자르에게 왕국과 존엄과 영광과 영예를 주셨나이다.

O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:

19 그리고 그분께서 그에게 주신 존엄으로 인하여 모든 백성들과 민족들과 언어들이 그 앞에서 떨고 두려워하였나이다. 그가 자신이 원하는 자를 살해하였으며, 그가 자신이 원하는 자를 살려 두었나이다. 그리고 그가 자신이 원하는 자를 세웠으며, 그가 자신이 원하는 자를 낮추었나이다.

And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.

20 그러나 그의 마음이 치켜세워지고 그의 생각이 교만으로 완악해졌을 때 그가 그의 왕위에서 쫓겨났고 그들이 그의 영광을 그에게서 빼앗았나이다.

But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

21 그런 다음에 그는 사람들의 아들들로부터 내쫓겼고 그의 마음이 짐승들과 같아졌으며 그의 거주지는 야생 나귀들과 함께 있었나이다. 그들이 그에게 소들처럼 풀을 먹였고 그의 몸은 하늘의 이슬로 젖었나이다. 이는 지극히 높으신 하나님께서 사람들의 왕국 안에서 다스리시는 것과 그분께서 원하시는 자는 누구든지 그것을 다스리도록 그분께서 임명하시는 것을 그가 마침내 알았나이다.

And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.

22 오, 벨샤잘이여, 그의 아들인 당신은 이 모든 것을 친히 아시면서도 당신의 마음을 겸손하게 하지 아니하셨나이다.

And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;

23 오히려 하늘의 주를 대적하여 자신을 치켜세우셨나이다. 그런즉 그들은 그분의 집의 기물들을 당신 앞에 가져왔나니, 당신과 당신의 고관들과 당신의 아내들과 당신의 후궁들이 그것들 안에 포도주를 담아 마셨나이다. 그러면서 당신께서 은과 금으로 만든 신들과, 놋과 철과 나무토막과 돌로 만든 신들을 찬송하셨으니, 그것들은 보지도 못하고 듣지도 못하며 알지도 못하나이다. 그런데 그분의 손안에 당신의 호흡이 있으며, 당신의 모든 길들이 그분의 것인 하나님께 당신은 영광을 돌리지 아니하셨나이다.

But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

24 그때 그분께로부터 그 손의 일부분이 보냄을 받았나이다. 그리하여 이 글귀가 기록되었나이다.

Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.

25 ¶ 그런즉 이것이 그 기록된 글귀이니, 즉 ‘메네 메네 테켈 우파르신’이니이다.

¶ And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

26 그것의 해석은 이러하니이다. ‘메네’라 함은 하나님께서 당신의 왕국을 헤아리시고 그것을 끝내셨다는 뜻이요,

This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.

27 ‘테켈’이라 함은 양팔저울에 당신이 저울질되는데 부족함이 발견된다는 뜻이요,

TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

28 ‘페레스’라 함은 당신의 왕국이 나뉘고 메데 사람들과 페르시아인들에게 주어진다는 뜻이니이다.”

PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

29 그때 벨샤잘이 명령하니, 그들이 다니엘에게 주홍색 옷을 입혔고 금목걸이를 그의 목 주변에 걸어 주었으며 그리고 그에 관하여 포고령을 내렸으니, 그가 왕국 안에서 셋째 치리자가 되리라는 것이더라.

Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

30 ¶ 그날 밤 칼데아인들의 왕 벨샤잘이 살해당하였더라.

¶ In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

31 그리고 메디아인 다리우스가 그 왕국을 점령하였으니, 그때 그는 약 육십이 세더라.

And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.
