1 해 아래에서 내가 보아 온 악이 있으니, 그것은 사람들 사이에 흔한 것이라.

1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:

2 하나님께서 어떤 사람에게 재물들과 부와 명예를 주셨으므로 그가 자신의 혼을 위하여 바라는 모든 것 중에서 아무것도 부족한 것이 없는데도 하나님께서 그에게 그것을 먹을 능력을 주지 아니하시니 오히려 타국인이 그것을 먹는도다. 이것은 헛된 것이요, 악한 질병이라.

2 A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

3 ¶ 설령 사람이 일백 명의 자녀들을 낳고 여러 해들을 살아서 그의 연수들의 날들이 많을지라도 그의 혼이 좋은 것으로 채워지지 아니하며 그가 장사되지 않는다면, 내가 말하노니, 그보다는 유산된 자가 나으니라.

3 ¶ If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

4 이는 그가 헛되이 왔다가 어둠 가운데서 떠나며 그의 이름이 어둠으로 덮일 것이기 때문이라.

4 For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.

5 이뿐만 아니라 그가 해를 보지 않았고 어떤 것도 몰랐느니라. 이 사람이 다른 사람보다 더 안식을 누리느니라.

5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.

6 ¶ 진정 그가 천 년을 두 번 산다 할지라도 여전히 그는 좋은 것을 보지 않았으니, 모두가 한 곳으로 가지 아니하느냐?

6 ¶ Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?

7 사람의 모든 수고는 그의 입을 위한 것이나 그럼에도 식욕은 채워지지 아니하느니라.

7 All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

8 그런즉 지혜로운 자가 어리석은 자보다 더 가진 것이 무엇이냐? 산 자들 앞에서 살아갈 줄 아는 가난한 자가 가진 것은 무엇이냐?

8 For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?

9 ¶ 두 눈으로 보는 것이 욕망으로 인하여 방황하는 것보다 나으니라. 이 또한 헛되며 영의 번민이라.

9 ¶ Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

10 존재해 온 것은 이미 이름이 지어졌으며, 그것이 사람이라는 것도 알려졌느니라. 또한 그는 자신보다 더 막강하신 분과 다투지도 못하리라.

10 That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

11 ¶ 헛된 것을 증가시키는 많은 것들이 있으므로 사람이 더 나은 점이 무엇인가?

11 ¶ Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?

12 그런즉 그가 그림자같이 보내는 그의 헛된 인생의 모든 날들 동안, 이 인생 속에서 사람에게 무엇이 좋은지 누가 알리오? 그런즉 해 아래에서 사람에게 그의 뒤에 무엇이 올지 누가 알려 줄 수 있겠는가?

12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
