1 좋은 이름이 귀한 향유보다 나으니라. 그리고 죽음의 날이 사람의 태어난 날보다 나으니라.
1 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
2 ¶ 애곡하는 집에 가는 것이 잔치하는 집에 가는 것보다 나으니라. 이는 그것이 모든 사람들의 끝이기 때문이라. 그런즉 산 자가 그것을 자기 마음에 두리라.
2 ¶ It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.
3 슬픔이 웃음보다 나으니라. 이는 안색의 서글픔에 의해 마음이 더 나아지기 때문이라.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
4 지혜로운 자들의 마음은 애곡하는 집 안에 있느니라. 그러나 어리석은 자들의 마음은 희락의 집 안에 있느니라.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
5 어리석은 자들의 노래를 듣는 것보다 지혜로운 자의 꾸짖음을 듣는 것이 사람에게 더 나으니라.
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
6 이는 냄비 아래에 있는 가시나무들의 탁탁거리는 소리같이 어리석은 자의 웃음도 그러하기 때문이라. 이 또한 헛되도다.
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.
7 ¶ 확실히 압제는 지혜로운 사람을 미치게 하느니라. 그리고 뇌물이 마음을 멸망하게 하느니라.
7 ¶ Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
8 어떤 것의 끝이 그것의 시작보다 나으니라. 그리고 영 안에서 인내하는 자가 영 안에서 교만한 자보다 나으니라.
8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
9 화를 내려고 너의 영 안에서 서두르지 말라. 이는 분노가 어리석은 자들의 품 안에 머무르기 때문이라.
9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
10 너는 “이전 날들이 이날들보다 나았던 까닭이 무엇이냐?” 하고 말하지 말라. 이는 네가 이것에 관하여 지혜롭게 물어보는 것이 아니기 때문이라.
10 Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.
11 ¶ 지혜는 유산과 더불어 좋은 것이라. 그런즉 지혜로 인하여 해를 쳐다보는 자들에게는 유익이 있느니라.
11 ¶ Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.
12 이는 지혜가 방벽이요, 돈이 방벽이기 때문이라. 그러나 지식의 탁월함은 지혜가 그것을 지닌 자들에게 생명을 준다는 것이라.
12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
13 하나님의 일을 숙고하라. 그런즉 그분께서 뒤틀리게 하신 것을 누가 반듯하게 할 수 있겠느냐?
13 Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?
14 번영의 날에는 즐거움으로 충만하라. 그러나 역경의 날에는 숙고하라. 하나님께서 또한 이것과 저것을 마주 대하게 두셨으니, 사람이 자기 뒤에 있을 어떤 것도 발견할 수 없게 하려 하심이라.
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
15 나의 헛된 날들 가운데 내가 모든 것들을 보아 왔노라. 자신의 의 가운데 죽는 의인이 있고, 자신의 사악함 가운데 자기 생명을 연장하는 사악한 사람이 있느니라.
15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
16 지나치게 의롭게 되지 말고 스스로 지나치게 지혜롭게 되지도 말라. 어찌하여 네가 너 자신을 멸망시키려 하느냐?
16 Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?
17 너는 지나치게 사악하게 되지도 말고 어리석게 되지도 말라. 어찌하여 네가 너의 때가 되기 전에 죽으려 하느냐?
17 Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
18 네가 이것을 붙드는 것이 좋으며, 진정 이것으로부터 너의 손을 거두지 아니하는 것 또한 좋으니라. 이는 하나님을 두려워하는 자가 그것들 모두에서 빠져나올 것이기 때문이라.
18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
19 지혜는 도시 안에 있는 열 명의 막강한 사람들보다도 지혜로운 자를 더 강하게 하느니라.
19 Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.
20 이는 선을 행하고 죄를 짓지 아니하는 의인이 땅 위에 한 명도 없기 때문이라.
20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
21 또한 언급되는 모든 말들에 주의를 기울이지 말라. 너의 종이 너를 저주하는 것을 네가 들을까 함이라.
21 Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
22 이는 너 자신도 마찬가지로 다른 이들을 저주해 왔다는 것을 너 자신의 마음도 종종 알기 때문이라.
22 For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
23 ¶ 내가 이 모든 것을 지혜로 입증하였노라. 나는 말하기를, “내가 지혜롭게 되겠노라.” 하였으나 그것은 나에게서 멀리 있었노라.
23 ¶ All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
24 멀리 떨어져 있고 지극히 깊은 것, 그것을 누가 찾아낼 수 있겠느냐?
24 That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
25 내가 나의 마음을 기울여 지혜와 사물들의 근거를 알고 탐구하며 찾아내려 하였고, 어리석은 짓의 사악함, 곧 어리석음과 광기의 사악함을 알려고 하였노라.
25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:
26 그리하여 내가 죽음보다 더 쓴 여자를 발견하니 그녀의 마음은 올무들과 그물들이요, 그녀의 두 손은 포승줄들과 같았노라. 하나님을 기쁘게 해 드리는 자는 누구나 그녀에게서 빠져나오리라. 그러나 죄인은 그녀에 의해 붙잡히리라.
26 And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
27 보라, 선포자가 말하노니, 내가 전말을 찾아내기 위하여 하나씩 세어가며 이것을 발견하였노라.
27 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:
28 나의 혼이 아직 찾고 있으나 내가 발견하지 못하고 있는 것은 이것이니, 곧 내가 일천 명 중에 한 명의 남자를 발견하였으나 그 모든 자들 가운데 여자는 한 명도 발견하지 못하였다는 것이라.
28 Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
29 보라, 내가 오직 이것만을 발견하였으니, 하나님께서 사람을 올바르게 지으셨으나 그들이 많은 창안물들을 찾아냈다는 것이라.
29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
