1 이후에 사무엘이 늙었을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그가 이스라엘 위에 그의 아들들을 판관들로 삼았더라.
1 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
2 이때 그의 첫 태생의 이름은 요엘이었더라. 그리고 그의 둘째의 이름은 아비야라. 그들은 베르셰바에서 판관들이었더라.
2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.
3 그런데 그의 아들들은 그의 길들 가운데서 살아가지 아니하였고 오히려 이익을 따라 옆길로 벗어났더라. 그리고 청탁물들을 취하며, 재판을 왜곡하였더라.
3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4 그때 이스라엘의 모든 장로들이 자기들끼리 함께 모여 라마흐에 있던 사무엘에게로 왔더라.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
5 그러면서 그에게 말하기를, “보소서, 당신은 늙었고 당신의 아들들은 당신의 길들 가운데 살아가지 않나이다. 이제 우리에게도 모든 민족들처럼 우리를 재판하는 왕을 세워 주소서.” 하였더라.
5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6 ¶ 그러나 그것이 사무엘을 불쾌하게 하였으니, 그들이 말하기를, “우리에게도 우리를 재판하는 왕을 주소서.” 하였을 때라. 그리하여 사무엘이 주께 기도하였더라.
6 ¶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
7 그러자 주께서 사무엘에게 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. “그들이 너에게 하는 모든 말에 있어서 백성의 음성에 경청하라. 이는 그들이 너를 거절한 것이 아니라 그들은 내가 그들을 통치하지 못하도록 나를 거절한 것이기 때문이라.
7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
8 내가 그들을 이집트에서 데리고 올라온 날부터 이날에 이르기까지 그들이 행한 모든 행위들에 따라 그들은 나를 저버렸고 다른 신들을 섬겼으니, 너에게도 그들이 그렇게 하는도다.
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
9 그러므로 이제 그들의 음성에 경청하라. 하지만 그럼에도 그들에게 엄중히 반대 의사를 표명하고 그들을 통치할 왕의 제도를 그들에게 보여 주라.”
9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
10 ¶ 그러자 그에게 왕을 구한 백성에게 사무엘이 주의 모든 말씀들을 알렸더라.
10 ¶ And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.
11 그러면서 그가 이같이 말하였더라. “이것이 너희를 통치할 왕의 제도가 되리라. 그는 너희의 아들들을 취하여 자신과 그의 병거들을 위해 그들을 그의 기병들이 되도록 임명할 것이라. 그리하면 일부는 그의 병거들앞에서 달려야 하리라.
11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.
12 그리고 그가 자신을 위해 천인대장들과 오십인대장들을 임명할 것이요, 그들로 하여금 그의 경지를 갈고, 그의 수확물을 거두며, 그의 전쟁 기구들을 만들고, 그의 병거들의 기구들을 만들도록 그들을 세울 것이라.
12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
13 또 그는 너희의 딸들을 취하여 향수를 만드는 자들이 되게 하고, 요리사들이 되게 하며, 제빵사들이 되게 할 것이라.
13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
14 또 그는 너희의 밭들과 너희의 포도원들과 너희의 올리브 밭들을 취하되, 그것들 중에서도 최상품을 취할 것이요, 그것들을 그의 종들에게 줄 것이라.
14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
15 또 그는 너희 씨의 십분의 일과 너희 포도원들의 십분의 일을 취하여 그의 관원들과 그의 종들에게 줄 것이라.
15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
16 또 그는 너희의 남종들과 너희의 여종들과 너희의 가장 준수한 청년들과 너희의 나귀들을 취하여 그들로 하여금 자신의 일을 하도록 시킬 것이라.
16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
17 그는 너희 양들의 십분의 일을 취할 것이요 너희는 그의 종들이 되리라.
17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
18 그리고 너희가 너희를 위하여 선택할 너희의 왕 때문에 그날에 너희는 부르짖으리라. 그리하면 주께서는 그날에 너희의 말을 듣지 아니하실 것이라.”
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
19 ¶ 그럼에도 불구하고 백성이 사무엘의 음성에 순종하는 것을 거부하였더라. 그러면서 그들이 이같이 말하였더라. “아니니이다. 그래도 우리는 우리를 다스리는 왕을 두겠나이다.
19 ¶ Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;
20 이는 우리도 모든 민족들과 같아지려 함이요, 우리의 왕이 우리를 재판하고 우리 앞에서 나가고 우리의 전투들을 싸우게 하려 함이니이다.”
20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
21 그러자 사무엘이 백성의 모든 말들을 듣고서 그가 그것들을 주의 두 귀에 되풀이해서 말씀드렸더라.
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.
22 이에 주께서 사무엘에게 말씀하시기를, “그들의 음성에 경청하여 그들에게 왕을 세워 주라.” 하셨느니라. 그러자 사무엘이 이스라엘 사람들에게 말하기를, “너희는 모두 저마다 자기 도시로 가라.” 하였더라.
22 And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
