1 그리고 그해가 지난 뒤에 왕들이 전투하러 나아갈 시기가 되었을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 다윗이 요압과, 그와 함께한 자신의 종들과, 온 이스라엘을 보냈더라. 그리고 그들이 암몬의 후손들을 멸하여 랍바를 포위하였더라. 그러나 다윗은 예루살렘에서 그대로 머물렀더라.
1 And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.
2 ¶ 그러다가 어느 저녁 무렵에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 다윗이 그의 침상에서 일어나 나와서 왕의 집의 지붕 위를 거닐었는데, 그가 자기 몸을 씻고 있는 한 여자를 지붕에서 보았더라. 그런데 보기에 그 여자가 몹시 아름다웠더라.
2 ¶ And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
3 그리하여 다윗이 사람을 보내서 그 여자에 대해 조사하였더라. 이에 누군가 말하기를, “이 여자는 엘리암의 딸이자 히타이트족 우리야의 아내인 밧셰바가 아니니이까?” 하였더라.
3 And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
4 그러자 다윗이 전령들을 보내어 그녀를 데려왔더라. 그리하여 그녀가 그에게 들어갔으니, 그가 그녀와 동침하였더라. 이는 그녀가 자신의 불결함에서 깨끗하게 되었기 때문이라. 그러고 나서 그녀가 그녀의 집으로 되돌아갔더라.
4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
5 이윽고 그 여자가 임신하였기에 다윗에게 사람을 보내어 알리며 말하기를, “제가 아이를 가졌나이다.” 하였더라.
5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
6 ¶ 그러자 다윗이 요압에게 사람을 보내며 말하기를, “나에게 히타이트족 우리야를 보내라.” 하였더라. 그러자 요압이 다윗에게 우리야를 보냈더라.
6 ¶ And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
7 이에 우리야가 그에게 오자 다윗이 그에게 요압이 어떻게 행하였는지, 또 백성은 어떻게 행하였는지, 또 전쟁이 얼마나 형통하게 되어 가는지를 캐물었더라.
7 And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.
8 그러면서 다윗이 우리야에게 말하기를, “너의 집으로 내려가서 너의 두 발을 씻으라.” 하였더라. 그리하여 우리야가 왕의 집을 떠났는데 거기에 왕으로부터 온 음식 한 상이 그를 뒤따랐더라.
8 And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king.
9 그러나 우리야는 왕의 집 문에서 자신의 주의 모든 종들과 함께 잤고, 자기 집으로 내려가지 아니하였더라.
9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
10 그런즉 그들이 다윗에게 알리며 말하기를, “우리야가 그의 집으로 내려가지 아니하였나이다.” 하였을 때, 다윗이 우리야에게 말하기를, “네가 너의 여정에서 돌아오지 아니하였느냐? 그렇다면 어찌하여 너는 너의 집으로 내려가지 아니하였느냐?” 하였더라.
10 And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house?
11 그러자 우리야가 다윗에게 말하기를, “법궤와 이스라엘과 유다가 천막들 안에서 지내고 있나이다. 또 나의 주인 요압과 나의 주의 종들이 벌판들에 주둔하고 있나이다. 그럴진대 제가 저의 집 안으로 들어가 먹고 마시며 저의 아내와 동침하리이까? 당신께서 살아 계심과 당신의 혼이 살아 있음을 두고 맹세하오니, 저는 이 일을 하지 아니하겠나이다.” 하였더라.
11 And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
12 이에 다윗이 우리야에게 말하기를, “오늘도 여기에 머물라. 그리하면 내일 내가 너를 떠나게 하겠노라.” 하였더라. 그렇게 하여 우리야가 그날과 이튿날을 예루살렘에서 머물렀더라.
12 And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.
13 이윽고 다윗이 그를 부르자 그가 그 앞에서 먹고 마셨으니, 다윗이 그를 취하게 하였더라. 그러다가 저녁때에 그가 자기 주의 종들과 함께 자기 침상 위에 누우려고 나갔으나 그의 집에 내려가지는 아니하였더라.
13 And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
14 ¶ 그러고 나서 아침에 이러한 일이 있었으니, 다윗이 요압에게 한 편지를 써서 그것을 우리야의 손에 보냈더라.
14 ¶ And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
15 그리고 그가 그 편지에 이와 같은 말을 기록하였으니, “너희는 우리야를 가장 격렬한 전투의 최전선에 배치하라. 그런 다음에 너희는 그를 두고 퇴각하여 그가 타격을 입고 죽게 하라.” 하였더라.
15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.
16 그리하여 요압이 도시를 관찰하였을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그가 자신이 알기로 용맹한 남자들이 있던 한 장소에 우리야를 배속하였더라.
16 And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were.
17 그리고 그 도시의 남자들이 나와서 요압과 싸웠는데 다윗의 종들에 속한 백성의 일부도 거기서 쓰러지고 히타이트족 우리야도 죽었더라.
17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
18 ¶ 그때 요압이 다윗에게 사람을 보내어 전쟁에 관하여 모든 것들을 알렸더라.
18 ¶ Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;
19 그러면서 전령에게 명하며 이같이 말하였더라. “네가 왕께 전쟁의 사안들을 알리기를 끝마쳤을 때,
19 And charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king,
20 그러다가 만일 왕의 격노가 일어나고 왕께서 너에게, ‘너희가 싸울 때 어찌 너희는 도시에 그토록 바짝 접근하였느냐? 그들이 성벽에서 쏘리라는 것을 너희는 몰랐느냐?
20 And if so be that the king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?
21 누가 여룹베솃의 아들 아비멜렉을 쳤느냐? 여자가 성벽에서 그의 위에 맷돌 한 짝을 던져서 그가 데베즈에서 죽지 아니하였느냐? 어찌 너희는 성벽 가까이 갔느냐?’ 하시는 일이 생긴다면 그때 너는 말하기를, ‘당신의 종 히타이트족 우리야도 죽었나이다.’ 하라.”
21 Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
22 ¶ 그렇게 하여 전령이 가서 다윗에게 이르러 요압이 그를 보낸 경위를 모두 알렸더라.
22 ¶ So the messenger went, and came and shewed David all that Joab had sent him for.
23 그런즉 그 전령이 다윗에게 이같이 말하였더라. “확실히 그 남자들은 우리보다 우세하였고 전장으로 우리에게 나왔기에 우리가 그들을 덮쳐서 바로 성문의 진입로까지 이르렀나이다.
23 And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.
24 그런데 궁수들이 성벽에서 당신의 종들을 쏘았나이다. 그리하여 왕의 종들 중 일부가 죽었나니, 당신의 종 히타이트족 우리야도 죽었나이다.”
24 And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king's servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
25 그때 다윗이 그 전령에게 말하기를, “너는 요압에게 이같이 말할지니, ‘이것이 너를 불쾌하게 하지 않도록 하라. 이는 칼이 이 사람도 집어삼키고 저 사람도 집어삼키기 때문이라. 도시를 대적하는 너의 전투가 더욱 거세지게 하여 그곳을 정복하라.’ 하라. 그리하여 너는 그에게 용기를 주라.” 하였더라.
25 Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.
26 ¶ 그런즉 우리야의 아내가 자신의 남편인 우리야가 죽었다는 것을 들었을 때 그녀가 자신의 남편을 위하여 애곡하였더라.
26 ¶ And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.
27 그리고 애곡하는 기간이 지나자 다윗이 사람을 보내어 그녀를 자기 집으로 데려왔으니, 그녀가 그의 아내가 되어 그에게 한 아들을 낳아 주었더라. 그러나 다윗이 행한 그 일이 주를 불쾌하게 하였더라.
27 And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
