1 이때 나사로란 이름으로 불리는 어떤 남자 한 명이 병들었는데 마리아와 그녀의 자매 마르다의 마을인 베다니 출신이었더라.

Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

2 (그 마리아는 향유를 주께 붓고 그분의 두 발을 자신의 머리카락으로 닦던 자였더라. 그녀의 오라비인 나사로가 병들었더라.)

(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

3 그러므로 그의 자매들이 그분께 사람을 보내며 말씀드리기를, “주여, 보소서, 당신께서 사랑하시는 자가 병들었나이다.” 하였더라.

Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

4 예수님께서 그것을 들으시자 친히 말씀하시기를, “이 병은 사망에 이르는 것이 아니라 오직 하나님의 영광을 위한 것이라. 이로써 하나님의 아들이 그것을 통하여 영광을 받으려 함이라.” 하셨느니라.

When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

5 이때 예수님께서는 마르다와 그녀의 자매와 나사로를 사랑하셨더라.

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

6 그러므로 그분께서 그가 병든 것을 들으셨을 때, 그분께서 계셨던 바로 그곳에서 이틀을 계속 거하셨더라.

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

7 그 뒤에 비로소 그분께서 자신의 제자들에게 말씀하시기를, “우리가 유대로 다시 들어가자.” 하시니라.

Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

8 그분의 제자들이 그분께 말씀드리기를, “스승님, 최근 들어 유대인들이 당신을 돌로 쳐서 죽이려고 하였는데 당신께서는 그곳으로 다시 가시나이까?” 하니라.

His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

9 예수님께서 대답하셨느니라. “낮에는 열두 시간이 있지 아니하냐? 만일 어떤 사람이 낮에 걸어 다니면 그가 걸려 넘어지지 아니하니, 그가 이 세상의 빛을 보기 때문이라.

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

10 그러나 만일 어떤 사람이 밤에 걸어 다니면 그가 걸려 넘어지니, 그 안에 아무런 빛이 없기 때문이라.”

But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

11 그분께서 이런 것들을 말씀하셨으며 그 뒤에 그분께서 그들에게 말씀하시기를, “우리의 친구 나사로가 잠들어 있도다. 그러나 내가 그를 잠에서 깨우기 위하여 친히 가노라.” 하시니라.

These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

12 그때 그분의 제자들이 말씀드리기를, “주여, 만일 그가 잠들어 있다면 그가 낫겠나이다.” 하였더라.

Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

13 하지만 예수님께서는 그의 죽음에 관하여 언급하셨더라. 그러나 그들은 그분께서 수면으로 안식을 취하는 것에 관하여 언급하셨다고 생각하였더라.

Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

14 그때 예수님께서 그들에게 이같이 명료하게 말씀하셨느니라. “나사로가 죽었느니라.

Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

15 그리고 내가 너희를 위하여 거기에 있지 아니한 것으로 나는 기뻐하니, 너희로 하여금 믿게 하려는 의도니라. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리가 그에게로 가자.”

And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

16 그때 디두무스라 불리는 도마가 자신의 동료 제자들에게 말하기를, “우리도 가서 우리가 그분과 함께 죽자.” 하였더라.

Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

17 그때 예수님께서 도착하시자 그가 무덤 안에 놓인 지 이미 나흘이 된 것을 그분께서 발견하셨더라.

Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

18 이때 베다니는 예루살렘에서 가까워 약 십오 펄롱5 떨어져 있었더라.

Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

19 그리하여 유대인들 중 많은 이들이 마르다와 마리아의 오라비에 관하여 그들을 위로하려고 그들에게 왔더라.

And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

20 그때 마르다는 예수님께서 오신다는 것을 그녀가 듣자마자 가서 그분을 맞이하였더라. 그러나 마리아는 집 안에 계속 앉아 있었더라.

Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

21 그때 마르다가 예수님께 이같이 말씀드렸더라. “주여, 만일 당신께서 여기에 계셨더라면 저의 오라비는 죽지 아니하였겠나이다.

Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

22 그러나 지금이라도 당신께서 하나님께 무엇이든 구하시면 하나님께서 당신께 그것을 주실 줄 제가 아나이다.”

But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

23 예수님께서 그녀에게 말씀하시기를, “너의 오라비가 다시 일어나리라.” 하시니라.

Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

24 마르다가 그분께 말씀드리기를, “마지막 날에 부활로서 그가 다시 일어날 것을 제가 아나이다.” 하니라.

Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

25 예수님께서 그녀에게 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. “나는 부활이요, 생명이라. 나를 믿는 자는, 비록 그가 죽었을지라도, 그가 살리라.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

26 그리고 누구든지 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 결코 죽지 아니하리라. 너는 이것을 믿느냐?”

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

27 그녀가 그분께 말씀드리기를, “예, 주여. 저는 당신께서 그리스도, 곧 하나님의 아들이시요, 세상 속으로 오기로 한 분이심을 믿나이다.” 하니라.

She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

28 그리고 그녀가 그렇게 말씀드린 후 그녀는 자신의 길을 가서 자기 자매인 마리아를 비밀리에 부르며 말하기를, “스승님이 오셔서 너를 부르신다.” 하였더라.

And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

29 그녀가 그것을 듣자마자 그녀는 속히 일어나서 그분께 나아왔더라.

As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

30 이때 예수님께서는 아직 마을 안으로 들어오지 아니하셨으며 오히려 마르다가 그분을 맞이한 그 장소에 계셨더라.

Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

31 그때 그녀와 함께 집 안에 있으면서 그녀를 위로하였던 유대인들이 마리아가 서둘러 일어나 밖으로 나간 것을 보자 그들은 그녀를 따르며 말하기를, “그녀가 무덤에서 울려고 거기로 가는도다.” 하였더라.

The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

32 그때 마리아가 예수님께서 계신 곳으로 와서 그분을 뵙자 그녀는 그분의 두 발 앞에 엎드리며 그분께 말씀드리기를, “주여, 만일 당신께서 여기에 계셨더라면 저의 오라비는 죽지 아니하였겠나이다.” 하였더라.

Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

33 그러므로 예수님께서 그녀가 우는 것과 그녀와 함께 온 유대인들이 우는 것을 보시자 친히 영 안에서 신음하셨고 괴로워하셨더라.

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

34 그러면서 말씀하시기를, “너희는 그를 어디에 뉘였느냐?” 하셨느니라. 그들이 그분께 말씀드리기를, “주여, 와서 보소서.” 하였더라.

And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

35 예수님께서 우셨더라.

Jesus wept.

36 그때 유대인들이 말하기를, “얼마나 그분께서 그를 사랑하셨는지 보라!” 하였더라.

Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

37 그리고 그들 중 일부가 말하기를, “눈먼 자의 두 눈을 열어 주었던 이 사람이 바로 이 사람은 죽지 않게 할 수 없었는가?” 하였더라.

And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

38 그러므로 예수님께서 다시 속으로 신음하시며 무덤에 오시니라. 그곳은 동굴이었고 돌이 그곳에 놓여 있더라.

Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

39 예수님께서 말씀하시기를, “너희는 그 돌을 치우라.” 하셨느니라. 죽은 자의 누이인 마르다가 그분께 말씀드리기를, “주여, 그가 죽은 지 나흘이 되었으므로 이때쯤 그는 악취를 풍기나이다.” 하였더라.

Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

40 예수님께서 그녀에게 말씀하시기를, “내가 너에게 ‘만일 네가 믿으려 한다면 너는 하나님의 영광을 보게 될 것이라.’라고 말하지 아니하였느냐?” 하시니라.

Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

41 그때 그들이 죽은 자가 눕혀진 장소에서 그 돌을 치웠더라. 그런 다음에 예수님께서는 그분의 두 눈을 들어 올리셨고 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. “아버지, 당신께서 제 말을 들어주셨사오니 제가 당신께 감사하나이다.

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42 그리고 당신께서 항상 저의 말을 들으시는 것을 제가 알았나이다. 그러나 곁에 서 있는 백성으로 인하여 제가 그것을 말하였나이다. 이로써 그들이 당신께서 저를 보내신 것을 믿게 하려는 것이니이다.”

And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43 그러고 나서 그분께서 그와 같이 말씀하셨을 때 친히 큰 목소리로 외치셨더라. “나사로야, 밖으로 나오라.”

And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44 그러자 죽었던 자가 손과 발이 수의에 묶인 채 밖으로 나왔는데 그의 얼굴은 작은 수건으로 감겨 있었더라. 예수님께서 그들에게 말씀하시기를, “그를 풀어 주고 그를 다니게 하라.” 하시니라.

And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

45 그때 마리아에게 왔다가 예수님께서 행하신 일들을 목격한 유대인들 중 많은 이들이 그분을 믿었더라.

Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

46 그러나 그들 중 일부는 바리새파 사람들에게로 자신들의 길을 갔으니 그들에게 예수님께서 행하신 일들을 알렸더라.

But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

47 ¶ 그때 수석 제사장들과 바리새파 사람들이 공회를 모아 이같이 말하였더라. “우리가 무엇을 하랴? 이는 이 사람이 많은 기적들을 행하기 때문이라.

¶ Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

48 만일 우리가 그를 이대로 가만히 두면 모든 사람들이 그를 믿을 것이라. 그리고 로마인들이 와서 우리의 처소와 민족을 모두 빼앗아 가리라.”

If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

49 그러자 그들 중 카야파스란 이름으로 불리는 한 명이 그 해당 연도의 대제사장으로서 그들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “너희는 아예 아무것도 모르며

And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

50 또한 한 사람이 백성을 위하여 죽음으로써 민족 전체가 망하지 않는 것이야말로 우리에게 유익한 것임을 고려하지도 않는도다.”

Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

51 그런즉 그가 스스로 이것을 말한 것이 아니요, 다만 그해의 대제사장으로서 예수님께서 그 민족을 위하여 죽으실 것을 그가 예언한 것이라.

And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

52 그리고 그 죽음은 그 민족만을 위한 것이 아니라 널리 흩어진 하나님의 자녀들을 하나로 한데 모으기 위한 것이기도 하였더라.

And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

53 그런즉 그들은 그날부터 그분을 사형에 처하게 하기 위하여 함께 의논하였더라.

Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

54 그러므로 예수님께서 유대인들 사이에서 더 이상 드러나게 걸어 다니지 아니하셨더라. 그러나 거기를 떠나 광야에서 가까운 지방으로 가셔서 에프라임이라 불리는 도시에 이르셨고 거기에서 그분의 제자들과 함께 계속 계셨더라.

Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

55 ¶ 이후에 유대인들의 유월절이 임박하여 가까웠더라. 그리하여 많은 이들이 지방으로부터 나와서 유월절 전에 자신들을 정화하고자 예루살렘으로 올라갔더라.

¶ And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

56 그때 그들이 예수님을 찾았으며 그들이 성전 안에 서 있는 동안 자기들끼리 말하기를, “너희는 어떻게 생각하느냐? 그가 명절에 오지 아니하겠느냐?” 하였더라.

Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

57 이때 수석 제사장들과 바리새파 사람들이 모두 명령을 내렸으니, 즉 누구든 그분께서 계신 곳을 안다면 그들이 그분을 붙잡을 수 있도록 그는 그것을 알려야 한다는 것이었더라.

Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
