1 이런 일이 있은 후에 유대인들의 한 명절이 있었으니, 예수님께서 예루살렘으로 올라가셨더라.

After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2 이때 예루살렘 양 시장 옆에 한 못이 있는데 그곳은 히브리어로 베데스다라고 불리고 다섯 주랑이 있더라.

Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

3 이 주랑들 안에는 허약한 자들에 속하고, 눈먼 자들과 절뚝이는 자들과 몸이 오그라진 자들에 속하는 수많은 무리가 누운 채 물이 움직이기를 기다렸더라.

In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

4 이는 천사가 일정 기간에 그 못 속으로 내려가서 물을 휘저었기 때문이라. 그때 누구든지 물이 휘저어진 후에 처음으로 발을 집어넣는 자는 그가 가진 질병이 무엇이었든지 온전하게 되었더라.

For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

5 그리고 어떤 남자 한 명이 거기에 있었는데 그가 어떤 병을 삼십팔 년간 지녔더라.

And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

6 예수님께서 누워 있는 그를 보시고 그가 지금 오랜 시간을 그 신세로 있었음을 아셨을 때, 친히 그에게 말씀하시기를, “네가 온전하게 되기를 원하느냐?” 하시니라.

When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

7 그 허약한 남자가 그분께 대답하기를, “선생님, 제게는 물이 휘저어질 때 저를 못 속으로 넣어줄 사람이 아무도 없나이다. 오히려 제가 가고 있는 사이에 또 다른 이가 저보다 먼저 내려가 발을 들여놓나이다.” 하였더라.

The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

8 예수님께서 그에게 말씀하시기를, “일어나라, 너의 침상을 집어 들고 걸어가라.” 하시니라.

Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

9 그러자 즉시 그 남자가 온전하게 되었고 자신의 침상을 집어 들고 걸어갔더라. 그런데 바로 그날이 안식일이었더라.

And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

10 ¶ 그러므로 유대인들이 고침을 받은 자에게 말하였으니, “안식일이로다. 네가 너의 침상을 나르는 것은 합법적이지 아니하도다.” 하였더라.

¶ The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

11 그가 그들에게 대답하기를, “나를 온전하게 만들어 주신 분, 바로 그분께서 나에게 ‘너의 침상을 집어 들고 걸어가라.’ 하고 말씀하셨느니라.” 하였더라.

He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

12 그때 그들이 그에게 묻기를, “너에게 ‘너의 침상을 집어 들고 걸어가라.’라고 말한 자가 어떤 사람이냐?” 하였더라.

Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

13 그런데 치유받은 자는 그분이 누구셨는지 알아채지 못하였으니, 예수님께서 그곳 안에 있는 무리로부터 스스로를 옮기셨기 때문이라.

And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

14 그 후에 예수님께서 성전에서 그를 찾으시니라. 그리고 그에게 말씀하시기를, “보라, 네가 온전하게 되었도다. 더 악한 것이 너에게 임하지 않도록 더는 죄를 짓지 말라.” 하셨느니라.

Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

15 그 사람이 떠나서 유대인들에게 알리기를 자신을 온전하게 하신 분이 예수님이셨다고 하였더라.

The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

16 그러므로 이에 유대인들이 예수님을 박해하였고 그분을 살해하려고 하였더라. 이는 그분께서 안식일에 이런 일들을 행하신 까닭이라.

And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

17 ¶ 그러나 예수님께서 그들에게 대답하시기를, “나의 아버지께서 지금까지 일하시니 내가 일하노라.” 하셨느니라.

¶ But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

18 그러므로 유대인들이 더욱 그분을 죽이려고 하였으니, 그분께서 안식일을 어기셨을 뿐만 아니라 하나님이 자신의 아버지라고도 말씀하심으로써 자신을 하나님과 동등하게 하셨기 때문이라.

Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

19 그때 예수님께서 그들에게 대답하여 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. “진실로, 진실로 내가 너희에게 말하노니, ‘아들은 스스로 아무것도 할 수 없고 다만 그가 아버지께서 하시는 것을 보는 것은 할 수 있느니라.’ 이는 그분이 무엇을 행하시든지 아들이 이것들 역시 동일하게 행하기 때문이라.

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

20 이는 아버지께서 아들을 사랑하사 그에게 자신이 행하시는 모든 것들을 보이시기 때문이라. 그리고 그분께서 그에게는 이것들보다 더 위대한 일들을 보이시리니, 너희로 하여금 놀라워하게 하려 하심이라.

For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

21 이는 아버지께서 죽은 자들을 일으키시고 그들을 되살아나게 하시는 것같이 아들도 그렇게 자신이 원하는 자를 되살아나게 하기 때문이라.

For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

22 이는 아버지께서는 아무도 심판하지 아니하시고 다만 모든 심판을 아들에게 위임하셨기 때문이라.

For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

23 이로써 그들이 아버지를 공경하는 것같이 모든 사람들이 아들을 공경하게 하려 하심이라. 아들을 공경하지 아니하는 자는 그를 보내신 아버지를 공경하지 아니하는 것이라.

That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

24 진실로, 진실로 내가 너희에게 말하노니, ‘나의 말을 듣고 나를 보내신 분을 믿는 자는 영원한 생명이 있으며 정죄에 들어가지 아니하고 오히려 사망에서 생명으로 넘겨지느니라.’

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

25 진실로, 진실로 내가 너희에게 이르노니, ‘그 시각이 오나니, 지금이라. 곧, 죽은 자들이 하나님의 아들의 목소리를 들을 때라. 그런즉 듣는 자들은 살리라.’

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

26 이는 마치 아버지께서 자신 안에 생명을 지니신 것같이 그분께서 아들에게 자신 안에 생명을 지니도록 그렇게 주셨기 때문이라.

For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

27 그리고 그에게 심판을 집행하는 권위 또한 주셨으니, 그가 인자인 까닭이라.

And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

28 이것을 놀라워하지 말라. 이는 그 시각이 오고 있기 때문이니, 무덤들 속에 있는 자들 모두가 그분의 음성을 들을 시각이라.

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

29 그리하면 그들이 밖으로 나오리니, 선을 행한 자들은 생명의 부활에 이르고 악을 행한 자들은 영벌의 심판의 부활에 이르리라.

And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

30 내가 나 스스로는 아무것도 할 수 없노라. 나는 내가 듣는 대로 심판하노라. 그리고 나의 심판은 정당하도다. 이는 내가 나 자신의 뜻을 찾지 아니하고 다만 나를 보내신 아버지의 뜻을 찾는 까닭이라.

I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

31 만일 내가 나 자신에 관하여 증거한다면 나의 증거는 참되지 아니하도다.

If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

32 ¶ 나에 관하여 증거하는 또 다른 이가 있으니, 그가 나에 관하여 증거하는 그 증거가 참되다는 것을 내가 아노라.

¶ There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

33 너희는 요한에게 사람을 보냈으며 그는 진리에 대하여 증거하였느니라.

Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

34 그러나 내가 사람으로부터 증언을 받지 아니하나 너희가 구원을 받도록 내가 이런 것들을 말하느니라.

But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

35 그는 타오르는 빛이자 발산하는 빛이었느니라. 그런즉 너희는 한동안 그의 빛을 크게 기뻐하기를 원하였느니라.

He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

36 ¶ 그러나 나에게는 요한의 것보다 더 위대한 증거가 있느니라. 이는 아버지께서 나에게 완성하라고 주신 일들, 곧 내가 행한 바로 그 일들이 아버지께서 나를 보내셨다고 나에 관하여 증거하기 때문이라.

¶ But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

37 그리고 나를 보내신 아버지께서 친히 나에 관하여 증거하셨느니라. 너희는 어느 때나 그분의 음성을 듣지 못하였고, 그분의 형태도 보지 못하였느니라.

And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

38 그리고 너희에게는 그분의 말씀이 너희 안에 거하고 있지 아니하는도다. 이는 그분께서 보내신 이를 너희가 믿지 아니하기 때문이라.

And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

39 ¶ 성경 기록들을 찾아보라. 이는 너희가 그것들 안에 영생이 있다고 너희가 생각하기 때문이라. 그런즉 성경 기록들은 나에 관하여 증언하는 것들이라.

¶ Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

40 그런데 너희는 너희의 생명을 얻고자 나에게 오려고 하지 아니하는도다.

And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

41 나는 사람들로부터 영예를 받지 아니하노라.

I receive not honour from men.

42 그러나 내가 너희를 아노니, 너희는 너희 안에 하나님의 사랑이 없도다.

But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

43 내가 나의 아버지의 이름으로 왔는데 너희는 나를 받아들이지 아니하는도다. 만일 또 다른 이가 자기 자신의 이름으로 온다면 너희는 그를 받아들이리라.

I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

44 서로 영예를 받으면서도 하나님께로부터만 오는 영예는 찾지 아니하니, 어찌 너희가 믿을 수 있겠느냐?

How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

45 내가 너희를 아버지께 고소할 것이라고 생각하지 말라. 너희를 고소하는 이가 있으니 바로 너희가 신뢰하는 모세로다.

Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

46 이는 모세가 나에 관하여 기록하였으므로 너희가 그를 믿었더라면 너희가 나를 믿었을 것이기 때문이라.

For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.

47 그러나 만일 너희가 그의 기록물들도 믿지 아니한다면 어찌 너희가 나의 말들을 믿겠느냐?”

But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
