1 그러자 온 회중이 그들의 목소리를 높이어 부르짖었더라. 그런즉 그 밤에 백성이 울었더라.
1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
2 그러면서 모든 이스라엘 자녀들이 모세를 대적하여, 또 아론을 대적하여 불평하였더라. 그리고 온 회중이 그들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “하나님께서 우리를 이집트 지역 가운데서 죽게 하셨더라면 좋았으리라! 아니면 하나님께서 우리를 이 광야 가운데서 죽게 하셨더라면 좋았으리라!
2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!
3 그런즉 주께서는 어찌 우리를 이 지역으로 데려오시어 칼에 쓰러지게 하시며, 우리의 아내들과 우리의 자녀들로 하여금 먹이가 되게 하셨는가? 이집트로 되돌아가는 것이 우리에게 낫지 아니하랴?”
3 And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
4 이어서 그들이 서로 말하기를, “우리가 대장 하나를 세우자. 그리고 우리가 이집트로 되돌아가자.” 하였더라.
4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
5 그때 모세와 아론이 이스라엘 자녀들의 회중의 전체 집회 앞에서 그들의 얼굴을 대고 엎드렸더라.
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6 ¶ 그러자 그 지역을 정찰한 자들 중에서 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여푼네의 아들 칼렙이 자신들의 옷을 찢었더라.
6 ¶ And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
7 그리고 그들이 이스라엘 자녀들의 일행 모두에게 이같이 일러 말하였더라. “우리가 그곳을 정찰하려고 통과한 그 지역은 지극히 좋은 지역이라.
7 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
8 만일 주께서 우리를 크게 즐거워하신다면 그때는 그분께서 우리를 이 지역으로 데리고 들어가셔서 그곳을 우리에게 주실 것이니, 곧 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 지역이라.
8 If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
9 너희는 주를 대적하여 반역만은 하지 말라. 또한 너희는 그 지역의 백성을 두려워하지도 말라. 이는 그들이 우리의 먹잇감이기 때문이라. 그들의 수호자는 그들을 떠났으나 주께서는 우리와 함께 계시는도다. 그들을 두려워하지 말라.”
9 Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.
10 그러나 온 회중이 그들을 돌들로 쳐서 죽이자고 하였더라. 그러자 주의 영광이 회중의 성막 안에서 온 이스라엘 자녀들 앞에 나타났더라.
10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11 ¶ 그리고 주께서 모세에게 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. “언제까지 이 백성이 나를 격분시키겠느냐? 또 내가 그들 가운데서 보여 온 모든 표적들에도 그들이 나를 믿기까지 얼마나 걸리겠느냐?
11 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
12 내가 역병으로 그들을 쳐서 그들의 상속권을 박탈하겠으니, 너로부터 그들보다 더 강대하고 막강한 민족을 만들겠노라.”
12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13 ¶ 그러자 모세가 주께 이같이 말씀드렸더라. “그리하시면 이집트인들이 그것을 들으리이다. (이는 당신께서 당신의 막강하심으로 이 백성을 그들 가운데서 데리고 나오셨기 때문이니이다.)
13 ¶ And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
14 그리하면 그들은 이 지역의 거주자들에게 그것을 알릴 것이니이다. 이는 주이신 당신께서 이 백성 가운데 계시는 것과 주이신 당신께서 얼굴과 얼굴을 마주하여 보이신 것과 당신의 구름이 그들 위에 서 있는 것과 당신께서 낮 시간에는 구름 기둥 가운데서, 밤에는 불 기둥 가운데서 그들 앞에서 가시는 것을 그들이 들었기 때문이니이다.
14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15 ¶ 이제 만일 당신께서 이 모든 백성을 한 사람같이 죽이신다면 그때 당신의 명성을 들은 민족들이 일러 말하기를,
15 ¶ Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16 ‘주께서 이 백성에게 맹세한 지역으로 그분이 그들을 데리고 들어갈 수 없었기에 그분이 그들을 광야 가운데서 살해하셨도다.’ 하리이다.
16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17 그런즉 이제 제가 당신께 간청하오니, 당신께서 이야기해 오신 대로 내 주의 권능이 위대하게 되도록 하옵소서. 말씀하시기를,
17 And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18 ‘주는 오래 참고, 자비가 많아 죄악과 불법을 용서하고, 어떤 방식으로도 유죄인 자들의 죄를 없애 버리지 아니하나니, 아버지들의 죄악을 벌하여 자녀들 위에 영향을 끼치게 하고 삼대와 사대까지 이르게 하느니라.’ 하셨나이다.
18 The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19 제가 당신께 간청하오니, 당신의 자비의 위대하심에 따라 그리고 당신께서 이집트에서부터 바로 지금까지 이 백성을 용서해 오신 것같이 이 백성의 죄악을 면하여 주옵소서.”
19 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20 그러자 주께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라. “내가 너의 말에 따라 그들의 죄악을 면하여 주었노라.
20 And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
21 그러나 참으로 내가 살아 있음을 두고 맹세하노니, 온 땅이 주의 영광으로 가득 차리라.
21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.
22 나의 영광을 목격하고 내가 이집트에서와 광야 가운데서 행한 나의 기적들을 목격하고서도 이제 이처럼 열 번이나 나를 시험하고 나의 음성에 경청하지 않은 저 모든 사람들로 인하여
22 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
23 그들은 내가 그들의 조상들에게 맹세한 그 지역을 결단코 보지 못하리니, 나를 격분시킨 자들 중 그 누구도 그곳을 보지 못하리라.
23 Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
24 그러나 내 종 칼렙은, 그가 다른 영을 자신에게 지녔고 나를 완전하게 따랐기에, 내가 그를 그가 들어갔던 그 지역 안으로 데리고 들어가겠노라. 그리하면 그의 씨가 그것을 소유하리라.
24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
25 (이때 아말렉족들과 가나안족들이 골짜기에 거하였더라.) 너희는 내일 돌이키라. 그리고 너희는 홍해 길을 통하여 광야로 들어갈지니라.”
25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
26 ¶ 다음으로 주께서 모세에게와 아론에게 이같이 일러 말씀하셨느니라.
26 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
27 “나를 대적하여 불평하는 이 악한 회중을 내가 얼마나 오랫동안 참아야 하겠느냐? 내가 이스라엘 자녀들의 불평들을 들었으니, 그것들은 그들이 나를 대적하여 불평하는 것들이라.
27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28 그들에게 이같이 말하라. ‘주가 말하노라. 참으로 내가 살아 있음을 두고 맹세하노니, 너희가 나의 두 귀에다 이야기한 대로 내가 너희에게 그렇게 하겠노라.
28 Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
29 너희의 사체들이 이 광야 가운데서 쓰러지리라. 그런즉 너희 중에서 이십 세 이상으로 너희의 전체 수에 따라 계수된 모든 자들, 곧 나를 대적하여 불평한 자들이 쓰러지리니,
29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,
30 내가 너희에게 그 안에 거하게 하려고 맹세한 곳에 관해서는, 여푼네의 아들 칼렙과 눈의 아들 여호수아를 제외하고는 너희가 결코 그 지역으로 들어가지 못하리라.
30 Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31 다만 너희가 먹이가 될 것이라고 말한 너희의 어린것들, 곧 그들은 내가 데리고 들어가겠으니, 그들은 너희가 멸시한 그 지역을 알게 되리라.
31 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
32 그러나 너희로 말하자면 너희의 사체들, 곧 그것들이 이 광야 가운데서 쓰러지리라.
32 But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
33 그리고 너희 자녀들은 광야 가운데 사십 년을 방황하며 너희의 사체들이 광야 가운데서 없어질 때까지 너희의 행음들을 감당하리라.
33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
34 너희가 그 지역을 정찰한 날들의 수에 따라, 곧 사십 일에서 하루를 일 년씩으로 하여 너희는 사십 년 동안이나 너희의 죄악들을 감당하리라. 그리하여 너희는 나의 약속이 파기된 것을 알리라.’
34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
35 나 주가 말하였노라. ‘나를 대적하여 함께 모인 이 악한 회중 모두에게 내가 반드시 그것을 행하겠노라. 그들은 이 광야 가운데서 소멸되리니, 거기에서 그들이 죽으리라.’”
35 I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36 그리하여 모세가 그 지역을 정찰하라고 보내었고, 되돌아와서 그 지역에 관해 허위 보고를 하여 회중 전체로 하여금 그분을 대적하여 불평하게 하였던 그 남자들,
36 And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
37 바로 그 지역에 관하여 악한 보고를 가져온 그 남자들이 주 앞에서 재앙으로 죽었더라.
37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
38 그러나 그 지역을 정찰하러 갔던 남자들 중에 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여푼네의 아들 칼렙은 생존하였더라.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
39 그리하여 이러한 말들을 모세가 모든 이스라엘 자녀들에게 알렸더라. 그러자 백성이 대단히 크게 애곡하였더라.
39 And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
40 ¶ 그리고 그들이 아침에 일찍 일어나 산 정상 가운데로 오르며 말하기를, “보소서, 우리가 여기 있으니, 주께서 약속하신 장소로 올라가겠나이다. 이는 우리가 죄를 지었기 때문이니이다.” 하였더라.
40 ¶ And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.
41 그러자 모세가 이같이 말하였더라. “어찌 너희는 지금 주의 명령을 위반하느냐? 그래도 그 일은 형통하지 못하리라.
41 And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.
42 올라가지 말라. 이는 주께서 너희 가운데 계시지 아니하기 때문이니, 너희로 하여금 너희 원수들 앞에서 패하지 않게 하려 함이라.
42 Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
43 이는 아말렉족들과 가나안족들이 거기 너희 앞에 있어 너희가 칼에 쓰러질 것이기 때문이니, 너희가 주께로부터 돌아선 까닭이라. 그러므로 주께서 너희와 함께하지 아니하시리라.”
43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.
44 그러나 그들은 주제넘게 언덕 꼭대기로 올라갔더라. 그럼에도 불구하고 주의 언약궤와 모세는 진영에서 떠나지 아니하였더라.
44 But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
45 그때 아말렉족들과, 그 언덕 가운데 거하던 가나안족들이 내려와서 그들을 쳤으니, 그들을 호르마에 이르기까지 패주시켰더라.
45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
