1 “남자들아, 형제들아, 그리고 아버지들아, 당신들은 이제 내가 당신들에게 하는 나의 변론을 들으라.

Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.

2 (이에 바울이 그들에게 히브리어로 말하는 것을 그들이 듣자 그들은 더욱 잠잠하였더라. 그리하여 그가 이같이 말하니라.)

(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)

3 나는 진실로 유대인으로서 실리시아의 도시인 타르수스에서 태어났으며 그럼에도 이 도시에 있는 가말리엘의 발치에서 조상들의 율법의 완전한 생활 양식에 따라 가르침을 받은 사람이요, 당신들 모두가 이날 그러한 것과 같이 하나님을 향하여 열심이었노라.

I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

4 그리고 내가 남자들과 여자들 모두를 결박하고 감옥들에 넘겨주면서 이 길을 죽음에까지 박해하였도다.

And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

5 대제사장 역시 나에 대하여 증거를 가지고 있으며 장로들의 신분을 가진 자들 모두 그러하도다. 나 또한 그들에게서 형제들에게 보내는 편지들을 받았고, 다마스쿠스에 있던 자들을 예루살렘으로 결박해 와서 형벌을 받게 하기 위하여 거기로 갔느니라.

As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.

6 그런데 이러한 일이 있었으니, 내가 나의 여정을 갖는 동안 정오쯤 되어 다마스쿠스에 가까이 도달하였는데 갑자기 하늘로부터 커다란 빛이 내 주위를 두르며 비추었도다.

And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

7 그리하여 내가 땅바닥에 쓰러졌고, ‘사울아, 사울아, 어찌하여 너는 나를 박해하느냐?’라고 나에게 말씀하시는 한 음성을 들었도다.

And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

8 그리하여 내가 말씀드리기를, ‘주여, 당신은 누구시니이까?’ 하였더라. 이에 그분께서 나에게 말씀하시기를, ‘나는 네가 박해하는 나사렛 예수라.’ 하셨느니라.

And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

9 그리고 나와 함께 있던 자들은 정녕 그 빛을 목격하였고 무서워하였도다. 그러나 그들이 나에게 말씀하신 분의 음성은 듣지 못하였도다.

And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

10 그런즉 내가 말씀드리기를, ‘주여, 제가 무엇을 하리이까?’ 하였더라. 이에 주께서는 나에게 말씀하시기를, ‘일어나서 다마스쿠스로 들어가라. 그리하면 네가 하도록 지정된 모든 것들에 관하여 네가 알게 되리라.’ 하셨느니라.

And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

11 그리하여 그 빛의 영광으로 인하여 내가 볼 수 없게 되자 나와 함께 있던 자들의 손에 이끌리어 내가 다마스쿠스로 들어갔노라.

And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

12 그리고 율법에 따른 독실한 남자요, 거기에 거하였던 모든 유대인들에게 좋은 평판을 지닌 아나니아라 하는 이가

And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

13 나에게 왔고 서서 나에게 말하기를, ‘사울 형제여, 그대의 시력을 받으라.’ 하였더라. 그러자 바로 그 시각에 나는 그를 올려다 보았노라.

Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

14 이어서 그가 이같이 말하였도다. ‘우리 조상들의 하나님께서 그대를 선택하시어 그대에게 그분의 뜻을 알게 하시고 그 정의로우신 분을 보게 하시며 그분의 입에서 나오는 음성을 듣게 하셨도다.

And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.

15 이는 그대가 보고 들은 것에 관하여 그대는 모든 사람들에게 그분의 증인이 되어야 하기 때문이라.

For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

16 그런즉 이제 그대는 어찌하여 지체하는가? 일어나서 침례를 받으라. 그리고 주의 이름을 부름으로써 그대의 죄들을 씻어 버리라.’

And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

17 그러고 나서 이러한 일이 있었으니, 내가 예루살렘으로 다시 왔을 때, 곧 내가 성전 안에서 기도하고 있는 바로 그 동안, 내가 현시의 몰입 가운데 있었노라.

And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;

18 그리하여 나에게 말씀하시는 그분을 보았으니, ‘서두르라. 그리하여 너는 속히 예루살렘 밖으로 나가라. 이는 그들이 나에 관한 너의 증언을 받아들이지 아니할 것이기 때문이라.’ 하셨느니라.

And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.

19 그러자 내가 이같이 말씀드렸노라. ‘주여, 제가 당신을 믿은 자들을 감옥에 가두고 각각의 모든 회당에서 때린 것을 그들이 아나이다.

And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:

20 그리고 당신의 순교자 스데반의 피가 흘려졌을 때 저 또한 곁에 서서 그의 죽음에 찬성하고 있었고 그를 살해한 자들의 의상을 지켰나이다.’

And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.

21 그러자 그분께서 나에게 말씀하시기를, ‘떠나라. 이는 내가 너를 여기에서 멀리 이방인들에게 보낼 것이기 때문이라.’ 하셨느니라.”

And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.

22 그러자 그들은 이 말까지 그에게 귀 기울여 듣다가 그때 자기 목소리들을 높여서 말하기를, “저런 사내는 땅에서 없애 버리라. 이는 그를 살려 두는 것이 적합하지 아니하기 때문이라.” 하였더라.

And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

23 그리하여 그들이 소리지르고 자신들의 옷을 벗어 던지며 공중에다 티끌을 내던지자

And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,

24 총대장은 바울이 성채 안으로 인도될 것을 명령하였고, 그가 채찍질로 심문받도록 분부하였더라. 이는 그가 어떤 이유에서 그들이 그를 대적하여 그토록 소리치는지 알고자 함이었더라.

The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.

25 그리하여 그들이 그를 가죽끈들로 결박하는 동안 바울이 곁에 서 있던 백부장에게 말하기를, “선고가 내려지지 않은 로마인 남자를 채찍질하는 것이 당신들에게 합법적이냐?” 하였더라.

And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

26 백부장이 그것을 듣자 그가 총대장에게 가서 알리며 말하기를, “당신이 행하는 것을 주의하소서. 이는 이 사람이 로마인이기 때문이옵니다.” 하였더라.

When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.

27 그때 총대장이 와서 그에게 말하기를, “나에게 알려 달라. 네가 로마인이냐?” 하였더라. 그가 말하기를, “그렇나이다.” 하였더라.

Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

28 그러자 총대장이 대답하기를, “나는 막대한 액수를 들여 이 자유의 권리를 획득하였노라.” 하였더라. 이에 바울이 말하기를, “반면에 나는 날 때부터 자유였노라.” 하였더라.

And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.

29 그때 그를 심문하려 했던 자들이 즉각 그에게서 떠났고 총대장 자신 역시 그가 로마인이었음을 알고 난 뒤에 무서워하였으니, 자신이 그를 결박하였기 때문이라.

Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

30 이튿날 그가 어떤 이유에서 유대인들에게 고소를 당하였는지 그 실상을 알고자 하였으므로 그가 그의 포박들에서 바울을 풀어 주었고 수석 제사장들과 그들의 공회 전체에게 출석할 것을 명령하였으며 바울을 데리고 내려가서 그를 그들 앞에 세웠더라.

On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
