1 그리고 야곱이 자기 길을 갔는데 하나님의 천사들이 그를 만났더라.
1 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
2 그리고 야곱이 그들을 목격하였을 때 그가 말하기를, “이것은 하나님의 군대로다.” 하였더라. 그리하여 그가 그 장소의 이름을 마하나임이라 불렀더라.
2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
3 그리하여 야곱이 세일 지역인 에돔 지방에 있는 자기 형제 에서에게 자신보다 앞서 전령들을 보냈더라.
3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
4 그런 다음에 그가 그들에게 명령하며 이같이 말하였더라. “이와 같이 너희는 나의 주 에서에게 고할지니라. ‘당신의 종 야곱이 이와 같이 말하기를, ‘제가 라반과 함께 체류하였고 이제까지 거기에서 계속 지냈나이다.
4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
5 그리고 제게 소들과 나귀들과 양 떼들과 남종들과 여종들이 있나이다. 그런즉 제가 당신의 목전에서 은혜를 발견할까 하여 나의 주께 알리려고 사람들을 보냈나이다.’ 하나이다.’”
5 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
6 ¶ 이윽고 전령들이 야곱에게 되돌아오며 말하기를, “저희가 당신의 형제 에서에게 갔는데 그 역시 당신을 만나려고 오고 있으며 그와 함께 사백 명의 남자들이 있나이다.” 하였더라.
6 ¶ And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
7 그때 야곱은 심히 무서워하며 괴로워하였더라. 그리하여 그는 자신과 함께한 이들과 양 떼들과 소 떼들과 낙타들을 두 부대들로 나누었더라.
7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
8 그러면서 말하기를, “만일 에서가 한쪽 일행에게 와서 그것을 치면 남아 있는 다른 일행은 탈출하리라.” 하였더라.
8 And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
9 ¶ 이어서 야곱이 이같이 말하였더라. “오, 나의 조상 아브라함의 하나님이여, 곧 나의 아버지 이삭의 하나님이시며, 저에게 말씀하시기를, ‘너의 고향과 너의 친족에게로 돌아가라. 그리하면 내가 너를 선대하겠노라.’ 하신 주여,
9 ¶ And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
10 저는 당신께서 당신의 종에게 보여 주신 모든 자비들 중에 가장 작은 것과 모든 진리 중에 가장 작은 것을 받을 자격이 없나이다. 이는 제가 제 지팡이를 가지고 이 요르단을 넘었는데 지금 저는 두 부대를 이루었기 때문이니이다.
10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
11 제가 당신께 간구하오니, 저의 형제의 손에서, 곧 에서의 손에서 저를 구출하소서. 이는 그가 와서 저와, 아이들과 함께 있는 어미를 칠까 하여 제가 그를 두려워하기 때문이옵니다.
11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
12 그런데 당신께서는 말씀하시기를, ‘내가 반드시 너에게 선을 행하겠으며 너의 씨를 많은 수로 인하여 셀 수 없는, 바다의 모래같이 만들겠노라.’ 하셨나이다.”
12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
13 ¶ 그리고 그는 바로 그날 밤 거기서 묵었더라. 그러고 나서 자기 손에 들어온 것들 중에서 자기 형제 에서를 위하여 증여물을 취하였으니,
13 ¶ And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
14 이백 마리의 암염소들과 이십 마리의 숫염소들과 이백 마리의 암양들과 이십 마리의 숫양들과
14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
15 삼십 마리의 젖을 내는 낙타들과 그것들의 새끼들과 사십 마리의 암소들과 열 마리의 수소들과 이십 마리의 암나귀들과 열 마리의 새끼 나귀들이라.
15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
16 그리고 그가 그것들을 각각의 모든 가축 떼에 따라 나누어 그의 종들의 손에 넘겨주며 그의 종들에게 말하기를, “나보다 앞서 넘어가고 가축 떼와 가축 떼 사이에 간격을 두라.” 하였더라.
16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
17 이어서 그가 맨 앞에 있는 자에게 명령하며 이같이 말하였더라. “나의 형 에서가 너를 만나 너에게 물으며 이같이 말하기를, ‘너는 누구에게 속하느냐? 그리고 너는 어디로 가느냐? 그리고 너의 앞에 있는 이것들은 누구의 것이냐?’ 할 때면
17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
18 그때 너는 말하기를, ‘그것들은 당신의 종 야곱의 것이니이다. 그것은 나의 주 에서에게 보내는 증여물이니, 보소서, 그 또한 저희 뒤에 있나이다.’ 할지니라.”
18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
19 곧이어 그가 두 번째 가축 떼와 세 번째 가축 떼와 그 가축 떼들을 따르는 모든 자들에게 명령하며 이같이 말하였더라. “너희가 에서를 발견하면 그에게 이런 식으로 고하라.
19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
20 그리고 너희는 이와 더불어 말하기를, ‘보소서, 당신의 종 야곱이 우리 뒤에 있나이다.’ 하라.” 이는 그가 말하기를, “내가 나보다 앞서가는 그 증여물로 그를 가라앉히리니, 그런 뒤에 내가 그의 얼굴을 보겠노라. 어쩌면 그가 나를 받아 줄 것이라.” 하였기 때문이라.
20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
21 그렇게 하여 그 증여물이 그보다 앞서갔고 그날 밤 그 자신은 일행 가운데 묵었더라.
21 So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
22 그리고 그날 밤 그가 일어나서 자신의 두 아내들과 자신의 두 여종들과 자신의 열한 명의 아들들을 데리고 얍복 여울을 넘어갔더라.
22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
23 그러고는 그가 그들을 데리고 가서 시내 너머로 보냈으며 자신이 소유한 것도 넘겨 보냈더라.
23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
24 ¶ 그리하여 야곱이 홀로 남겨졌는데 거기서 한 남자가 동이 틀 때까지 그와 맞붙어 싸웠더라.
24 ¶ And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25 그런데 그가 자신이 그를 꺾지 못하는 것을 보자 그가 야곱의 넓적다리에서 움푹 들어간 곳을 건드렸더라. 그러자 그가 야곱과 맞붙어 싸우는 동안 야곱의 넓적다리에서 움푹 들어간 곳이 위골되었더라.
25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26 그런즉 그가 말하기를, “동이 트므로 나를 가게 하라.” 하였더라. 이에 야곱이 말하기를, “당신께서 저에게 복을 주지 아니하신다면 저는 당신을 가게 하지 아니하겠나이다.” 하였더라.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 그러자 그가 그에게 말하기를, “너의 이름이 무엇이냐?” 하였더라. 이에 그가 말하기를, “야곱이옵니다.” 하였더라.
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 그러자 그가 말하기를, “너의 이름은 더 이상 야곱이라 불리지 아니하고 다만 이스라엘이라 불리리라. 이는 네가 통치자로서 하나님과 사람들을 맞서는 권세가 있어 승리하였기 때문이라.” 하였더라.
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29 이에 야곱이 그에게 물어 말하기를, “제가 당신께 간구하오니, 제게 당신의 이름을 알려 주소서.” 하였더라. 그러자 그가 말하기를, “어찌 너는 나의 이름을 묻느냐?” 하였더라. 그리고 그가 거기에서 야곱에게 복을 주었더라.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30 그리하여 야곱이 그곳의 이름을 프니엘이라 불렀으니, 이는 “내가 얼굴과 얼굴을 마주하여 하나님을 보았으나 내 생명이 보존되었도다.” 하였기 때문이라.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31 이윽고 그가 프누엘을 넘어가는 동안 해가 그의 위로 솟았으니, 그가 자신의 넓적다리를 절뚝거렸더라.
31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
32 그러므로 이스라엘 자녀들은 넓적다리의 움푹 들어간 곳에 수축한 힘줄을 오늘날까지 먹지 아니하느니라. 이는 그가 수축한 힘줄이 있는 야곱의 넓적다리의 움푹 들어간 곳을 건드린 까닭이라.
32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
