1 그 당시에 침례자 요한이 와서 유대 광야 가운데서 선포하며
1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
2 말하기를, “너희는 회개하라. 이는 하늘의 왕국이 가깝기 때문이라.” 하였더라.
2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3 이는 이 사람이 예언자 이사-야를 통하여 언급된 자이기 때문이라. 말씀하시기를, “광야 가운데서 외치는 이의 목소리로다. 너희는 주의 길을 예비하며 그분의 행로들을 곧게 하라.” 하신 것이라.
3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
4 그리고 바로 그 요한은 낙타털로 된 자기 의상을 입었고 자기 허리 주위로 가죽띠를 띠었더라. 또한 그의 음식은 메뚜기들과 야생 꿀이었더라.
4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
5 그때 예루살렘과 온 유대와 요르단 주변의 온 지역이 그에게 나아가서
5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
6 자신들의 죄들을 자백하며 요르단 안에서 그에게 침례를 받았더라.
6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 ¶ 그러나 그가 많은 수의 바리새파 사람들과 사두개파 사람들이 그에게 침례를 받으려고 오는 것을 보자 그가 그들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “오, 독사들의 세대야, 누가 너희에게 다가오는 진노로부터 도망하라고 경고하였느냐?
7 ¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 그러므로 회개에 알맞은 열매들을 내고,
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 너희 속으로 말하기를, ‘우리는 아브라함을 우리의 조상으로 두고 있노라.’ 하고 생각하지 말라. 이는 하나님께서 이 돌들로 아브라함에게 자녀들을 일으키실 수 있다고 내가 너희에게 말하기 때문이라.
9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10 그리고 이제 또한 도끼가 나무들의 뿌리에 놓여 있노라. 그러므로 좋은 열매를 내지 아니하는 나무마다 찍혀 쓰러지고 불속에 던져지느니라.
10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11 나는 정녕 회개에 이르게 하기 위하여 너희에게 물로 침례를 주노라. 그러나 내 뒤에 오시는 그분께서는 나보다 더 막강하시니, 나는 그분의 신발들을 받쳐 들 만한 자격도 없노라. 그분께서는 너희에게 성령님으로 침례를 주실 것이요, 또 불로 침례를 주시리라.
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12 그분의 키가 자신의 손에 들려 있으며, 그분께서 자신의 마당을 철저히 깨끗하게 치우실 것이요, 자신의 밀알을 곡식 창고 안으로 모으시리라. 그러나 쭉정이는 그분께서 꺼지지 않는 불로 태워 버리시리라.”
12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
13 ¶ 그때 예수님께서 갈릴리로부터 요르단으로 요한에게 오셨으니 그에게 침례를 받으려 하심이라.
13 ¶ Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14 그러나 요한이 그분을 말리며 말씀드리기를, “제가 당신께 침례를 받아야 될 터인데 당신께서 제게로 오시나이까?” 하였더라.
14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 그러자 예수님께서 그에게 대답하여 말씀하시기를, “지금은 이렇게 되도록 이를 승낙하라. 이는 우리가 이렇게 하여 모든 의를 성취하는 것이 마땅하기 때문이라.” 하셨느니라. 그제서야 그가 그분의 요청을 승낙하였더라.
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16 그러자 예수님, 곧 그분께서 침례를 받으시고 물속에서부터 곧바로 올라오셨을 때에, 보라, 그리하여 하늘들이 그분께 열렸으며 하나님의 영께서 비둘기같이 내려오시어 자신 위에 내려앉으시는 것을 그분께서 보셨더라.
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 그러고 나서 보라, 하늘로부터 온 한 음성이 말씀하시기를, “이는 나의 사랑을 받는 아들이니, 내가 그의 안에서 매우 기뻐하노라.” 하셨느니라.
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
