1 미디안의 제사장이자 모세의 장인인 이드로가 하나님께서 모세를 위하여 그리고 그의 백성 이스라엘을 위하여 하신 모든 것과 주께서 이스라엘을 이집트에서 데리고 나오신 것을 듣자
1 When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt;
2 그때 모세의 장인인 이드로가 모세가 그녀를 돌려보냈던 그의 아내 집포라와
2 Then Jethro, Moses' father in law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,
3 그녀의 두 아들을 데려왔는데 그들 중 한 명의 이름은 게르숌이었더라. 이는 그가 말하기를, “내가 타국 지역에서 외지인이 되었도다.” 하였기 때문이라.
3 And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:
4 그리고 다른 한 명의 이름은 엘리에젤이었더라. 이는 그가 말하기를, “나의 조상의 하나님께서 나의 도움이 되셨고 파라오의 칼에서 나를 구출하셨도다.” 하였기 때문이라.
4 And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:
5 그런즉 모세의 장인인 이드로가 모세의 아들들과 모세의 아내와 더불어 광야 가운데로 들어와 모세에게로 왔으니, 그곳은 모세가 하나님의 산 근처에 주둔한 곳이더라.
5 And Jethro, Moses' father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:
6 그리고 그가 모세에게 말하기를, “그대의 장인인 나, 이드로가 그대의 아내와 그녀와 함께한 그녀의 두 아들을 데리고 그대에게 왔노라.” 하였더라.
6 And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.
7 ¶ 그러자 모세가 자기 장인을 맞이하려고 나가 경의를 표하며 그에게 입 맞추었더라. 그리고 그들이 서로 그들의 안부를 물었더라. 그러고 나서 그들이 천막 안으로 들어갔더라.
7 ¶ And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.
8 그리하여 모세는 주께서 이스라엘을 위하여 파라오와 이집트인들에게 행하신 모든 것과 도중에 자신들에게 임한 모든 고역과 주께서 어떻게 자신들을 구출하셨는지를 자기 장인에게 알렸더라.
8 And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.
9 그러자 이드로는 주께서 이스라엘에게 행하신 모든 선하심으로 인하여 크게 기뻐하였으니, 그분께서 이집트인들의 손에서 이스라엘을 구출하셨음이라.
9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.
10 그리고 이드로가 이같이 말하였더라. “주께서 찬양받으시기를 바라노라. 그분께서 너희를 이집트인들의 손에서와 파라오의 손에서 구출하셨으니, 그분께서는 백성을 이집트인들의 손 아래에서 구출하신 분이라.
10 And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.
11 이제 나는 주께서 모든 신들보다 더 위대하신 것을 아노라. 이는 그들이 교만하게 상대한 일에 있어서 그분께서는 그들 위에 계셨기 때문이라.”
11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.
12 그런 다음에 모세의 장인인 이드로가 하나님을 위하여 번제물과 희생 제물들을 취하였더라. 그러자 아론이 왔고 이스라엘의 모든 장로들이 왔으니, 하나님 앞에서 모세의 장인과 함께 빵을 먹고자 함이더라.
12 And Jethro, Moses' father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father in law before God.
13 ¶ 그러고 나서 이튿날 이러한 일이 있었으니, 모세가 백성을 재판하려고 앉았는데 백성이 아침부터 저녁까지 모세의 곁에 서 있었더라.
13 ¶ And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.
14 그리고 모세의 장인이 그가 백성에게 행한 것을 모두 목격하자 그가 말하기를, “그대가 백성에게 행하는 이 일이 무엇인가? 어찌하여 그대는 그대 홀로 앉아 있고 모든 백성은 아침부터 저녁때까지 그대 곁에 서 있는가?” 하였더라.
14 And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?
15 그러자 모세가 자기 장인에게 이같이 말하였더라. “이는 백성이 하나님께 여쭤보려고 제게 오는 까닭이니이다.
15 And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:
16 그들에게 어떤 문제가 있을 때면 그들이 제게 오나니, 저는 한 사람과 또 다른 사람 사이에서 재판하고, 하나님의 규례들과 그분의 법들을 제가 그들에게 알게 하나이다.”
16 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.
17 그러자 모세의 장인이 그에게 이같이 말하였더라. “그대가 행하는 이 일이 좋지 않도다.
17 And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.
18 그대는 반드시 지쳐 가리니, 그대와 그대 곁에 있는 이 백성 모두 그러하리라. 이는 이것이 그대에게 너무 무겁기 때문이라. 그대는 그것을 그대 홀로 수행할 수 없도다.
18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
19 이제 나의 음성에 경청하라. 내가 그대에게 조언을 주겠으니, 하나님께서 그대와 함께 계시리라. 그대가 하나님께 소송들을 가져갈 수 있도록 그대는 백성을 위하여 하나님 쪽을 향해 있으라.
19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:
20 그리하여 그대는 그들에게 법령들과 법들을 가르칠지니, 그들이 반드시 그 가운데 살아가야 하는 길과 그들이 반드시 해야 하는 일을 그들에게 보여줄지니라.
20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
21 이와 더불어 그대는 모든 백성 중에서 능력이 있는 남자들, 곧 하나님을 두려워하고 진실하며 탐욕을 증오하는 그러한 남자들을 선발하라. 그런 다음에 그러한 자들을 백성 위에 배치하여 천 명당 한 명씩 치리자들이 되게 하고, 백 명당 한 명씩 치리자들이 되게 하며, 오십 명당 한 명씩 치리자들이 되게 하고, 열 명당 한 명씩 치리자들이 되게 하라.
21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
22 그리하여 그들로 하여금 모든 시기들에 백성을 재판하게 하라. 그리하면 이러한 일이 일어나리니, 모든 중대한 사안마다 그들이 그대에게 가져올 것이나 모든 사소한 사안마다 그들이 재판하리라. 그렇게 하여 그것이 그대를 위해서 더 쉬워질 것이요, 그들이 그대와 더불어 짐을 감당하리라.
22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
23 만일 그대가 이 일을 실행하고 하나님께서 그대에게 그렇게 명령하신다면 그때 그대는 능히 견딜 수 있을 것이요, 이 모든 백성도 평안히 자신들의 처소로 가리라.”
23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
24 그렇게 하여 모세는 자기 장인의 음성에 경청하였고 그가 말한 것을 모두 실행하였더라.
24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.
25 그런즉 모세가 온 이스라엘 중에서 능력이 있는 남자들을 선택하고 그들을 백성 위에 수장들로 삼았으니, 천 명당 한 명씩 치리자들로 삼고, 백 명당 한 명씩 치리자들로 삼으며, 오십 명당 한 명씩 치리자들로 삼고, 열 명당 한 명씩 치리자들로 삼았더라.
25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
26 그리하여 그들이 모든 시기들에 백성을 재판하였더라. 그들이 어려운 소송들은 모세에게 가져왔으나 모든 사소한 사안은 저마다 그들이 스스로 재판하였더라.
26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.
27 ¶ 이후에 모세가 자기 장인을 떠나보냈으니, 그가 자기 길을 가서 그의 본토 가운데로 들어갔더라.
27 ¶ And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
