전도서 10장
1 죽은 파리들이 약제사의 향유에서 악취가 나게 하는 것같이 작은 어리석음도 지혜와 명예로 명망이 있는 자를 그렇게 하느니라.
1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.
2 지혜로운 사람의 마음은 그의 오른편에 있느니라. 그러나 어리석은 자의 마음은 그의 왼편에 있느니라.
2 A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.
3 또한 진정 어리석은 자가 길가를 걸어갈 때 그의 지혜가 그를 저버리나니, 그는 자신이 어리석은 자라고 모든 이에게 저마다 말하느니라.
3 Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.
4 만일 치리자의 영이 너를 대적하여 일어나면 너의 위치를 떠나지 말라. 이는 굴복하는 것이 크나큰 화들을 누그러뜨리기 때문이라.
4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.
5 내가 해 아래에서 보아 온 악이 있는데 그것은 치리자에게서 나오는 과오와 같으니,
5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
6 어리석은 짓이 대단한 위엄 가운데 놓이는 것과 부자가 낮은 위치에 앉는 것이라.
6 Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
7 말들을 탄 종들과, 종들처럼 땅 위를 걸어 다니는 통치자들을 내가 보아 왔노라.
7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
8 구렁을 파는 자는 그 속에 빠지리라. 그리고 누구나 울타리를 부수는 자는 뱀이 그를 물리라.
8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
9 돌들을 치우는 자는 누구나 그것으로 해를 입으리라. 그리고 목재를 쪼개는 자는 그것에 의하여 위험에 처하리라.
9 Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.
10 만일 철이 무디어지는데도 그가 날을 갈지 아니한다면, 그때는 그가 더 많은 힘을 들여야 하느니라. 그러나 지혜는 지도하기에 유익하니라.
10 If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.
11 그 뱀은 주술 없이는 반드시 물리니, 말쟁이가 더 나을 게 없느니라.
11 Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
12 지혜로운 사람의 입에서 나오는 말들은 은혜로우니라. 그러나 어리석은 자의 입술은 자신을 삼켜 버리리라.
12 The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
13 그의 입에서 나오는 말들의 시작은 어리석음이라. 그리고 그의 대화의 끝은 해로운 광기니라.
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.
14 또한 어리석은 자는 말들로 가득하도다. 사람은 무슨 일이 일어날지 헤아릴 수 없느니라. 그런즉 그의 뒤에 무슨 일이 일어날지 누가 그에게 알려 줄 수 있겠느냐?
14 A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
15 어리석은 자들의 수고는 그들 모두를 저마다 피곤하게 하나니, 그가 어떻게 도시로 가는지 모르기 때문이라.
15 The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
16 ¶ 오, 대지여, 너의 왕이 아이이며 너의 통치자들이 아침에 먹을 때 너에게 화가 있으리라!
16 ¶ Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
17 오, 대지여, 너의 왕이 고귀한 자들의 아들이며 너의 통치자들이 술 취함을 위해서가 아니라 힘을 얻기 위하여 적합한 시기에 먹을 때 너는 복되도다!
17 Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
18 ¶ 심한 게으름에 의하여 건물이 부식하느니라. 그리고 두 손의 나태함으로 인하여 집이 뚫려 새느니라.
18 ¶ By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
19 ¶ 잔치는 웃음을 위하여 마련되고, 포도즙은 흥겹게 하느니라. 그러나 돈은 모든 것들에 대응하느니라.
19 ¶ A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.
20 ¶ 왕을 저주하지 말지니, 너의 생각 속에서라도 결코 하지 말라. 그리고 너의 침소 안에서 부자를 저주하지 말라. 이는 공중의 새가 그 음성을 옮길 것이요, 날개들을 가진 것이 그 사안을 알릴 것이기 때문이라.
20 ¶ Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
