전도서 8장

1 누가 지혜로운 사람과 같으냐? 그리고 누가 사물의 해석을 아느냐? 사람의 지혜는 그의 얼굴을 빛나게 하나니, 그의 얼굴의 무모함이 바뀌리라.

1 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.

2 내가 너에게 조언하노니, 왕의 명령을 지키고 하나님께 맹세한 것에 관하여 그것을 지키라.

2 I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.

3 그분의 목전에서 벗어나려고 서두르지 말라. 악한 것 가운데 서지 말라. 이는 그분께서 무엇이든지 자신을 기쁘게 하는 것을 행하시기 때문이라.

3 Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.

4 왕의 말씀이 있는 곳에는 권능이 있느니라. 그런즉 누가 그에게 말하기를, “당신은 무엇을 하는가?” 할 수 있겠느냐?

4 Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?

5 명령을 지키는 자는 누구나 악한 일을 겪지 아니하리라. 그리고 지혜로운 사람의 마음은 때와 심판을 모두 분별하느니라.

5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.

6 ¶ 이는 모든 목적마다 때와 심판이 있기 때문이라. 그러므로 사람의 가련함이 그의 위에 크나크도다.

6 ¶ Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.

7 이는 그가 앞으로 있을 것을 모르기 때문이라. 그런즉 언제 그 일이 있을지 누가 그에게 알려줄 수 있겠느냐?

7 For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?

8 영을 다스리는 권능이 있어서 영을 머물게 할 사람이 전혀 없고 죽음의 날에 권능을 가진 자도 전혀 없느니라. 그리고 그 전쟁에는 열외가 전혀 없으니, 사악함도 그것에 넘겨진 자들을 구출하지 못하리라.

8 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.

9 내가 이 모든 것을 보아 왔고 해 아래에서 이루어진 모든 일마다 나의 마음을 기울였느니라. 한 사람이 다른 사람을 다스림으로써 자기 자신을 해치는 때가 있느니라.

9 All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.

10 그리고 이처럼 내가 사악한 자들이 장사되는 것을 보았더니, 그들은 왔다가 거룩한 자의 처소를 떠나갔으며 자신들이 그렇게 행했던 도시에서 그들은 잊혔느니라. 이 또한 헛되도다.

10 And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.

11 이는 악한 일에 대한 판결이 신속하게 집행되지 아니하기 때문이라. 그러므로 사람들의 아들들의 마음이 그들 안에서 악을 행하기로 완전히 정해지는도다.

11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

12 ¶ 비록 죄인이 일백 번 악을 행하고 그의 날들이 연장된다 할지라도 여전히 내가 확실히 아는 것은 하나님을 두려워하는 자들, 곧 그분 앞에서 두려워하는 자들이 잘되리라는 것이라.

12 ¶ Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:

13 그러나 사악한 자는 잘되지 아니할 것이요, 그는 그림자와 같은 자신의 날들을 연장시키지도 못하리라. 이는 그가 하나님 앞에서 두려워하지 아니하는 까닭이라.

13 But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.

14 땅 위에서 행해지는 헛된 것이 있으니, 곧 사악한 자들의 행위에 따른 일이 의인들에게 발생하며, 또 한편 의로운 자들의 행위에 따른 일이 사악한 사람들에게 발생한다는 것이라. 나는 이 또한 헛된 것이라고 말하였노라.

14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.

15 그때 내가 희락을 권하였으니, 사람에게 먹고 마시고 즐거워하는 것보다 해 아래에서 더 좋은 것이 없는 까닭이라. 이는 해 아래에서 하나님께서 그에게 주시는 그의 생애의 날들에 그의 수고한 것 가운데 그것이 그의 곁에 거할 것이기 때문이라.

15 Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.

16 ¶ 내가 지혜를 알고자 또 땅 위에서 이루어진 일을 보고자 나의 마음을 기울였을 때, (이는 낮이나 밤이나 자신의 두 눈으로 잠을 보지 못하는 자도 있기 때문이라.)

16 ¶ When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)

17 그때 내가 하나님의 모든 역사를 보았으니, 곧 해 아래에서 이루어진 일을 사람이 찾아낼 수 없다는 것이라. 이는 사람이 그것을 찾아내려고 수고할지라도 여전히 그가 그것을 발견할 수 없는 까닭이라. 게다가 진정 지혜로운 사람이 그것을 알려고 생각할지라도 여전히 그는 그것을 발견할 수 없으리라.

17 Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
