전도서 9장

1 이 모든 것으로 인해 내가 나의 마음속으로 숙고하여 실로 이 모든 것을 분명히 밝혔나니, 곧 의로운 자들과 지혜로운 자들과 그들의 행위들이 하나님의 손안에 있다는 것이라. 그들 앞에 있는 모든 것으로 인하여 아무도 사랑이나 증오를 모르느니라.

1 For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.

2 모든 일들이 모두에게 마찬가지로 임하느니라. 의로운 자와 사악한 자에게, 선한 자, 곧 정결한 자와 불결한 자에게, 희생 제물을 드리는 자와 희생 제물을 드리지 아니하는 자에게 하나의 일이 있도다. 선한 자와 같이 죄인도 그러하며 맹세하는 자가 맹세를 두려워하는 자와 마찬가지니라.

2 All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

3 이것은 해 아래에서 이루어진 모든 일들 가운데 하나의 악이니, 곧 모두에게 하나의 일이 있다는 것이라. 진정 사람들의 아들들의 마음이 또한 악으로 충만하여 그들이 살아 있는 동안 광기가 그들의 마음속에 있나니, 그러고 난 뒤에 그들이 죽은 자들에게로 가느니라.

3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

4 ¶ 이는 살아 있는 모든 것에 합류되는 자에게 소망이 있기 때문이요, 살아 있는 개가 죽은 사자보다 낫기 때문이라.

4 ¶ For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

5 이는 살아 있는 자들은 그들이 죽을 것을 알고 있으나 죽은 자들은 어떤 것도 모르며 그들에게 더 이상 보상도 없기 때문이요, 그들에 관한 기억이 잊히기 때문이라.

5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

6 또한 그들의 사랑과 그들의 증오와 그들의 시기도 이제는 사라졌느니라. 그들은 또한 해 아래에서 이루어진 어떤 것에서도 더 이상 영원토록 몫이 없느니라.

6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

7 ¶ 너의 길을 가서 즐거움으로 너의 빵을 먹고 흥겨운 마음으로 너의 포도즙을 마시라. 이는 하나님께서 너의 행위들을 지금 받으시기 때문이라.

7 ¶ Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

8 너의 의복들을 항상 희게 하라. 그리고 너의 머리에 향유가 모자라지 아니하게 하라.

8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.

9 너의 헛된 생애의 모든 날들 동안 네가 사랑하는 아내, 곧 너의 헛된 모든 날들 동안 그분께서 해 아래에서 너에게 주신 아내와 함께 충만한 즐거움으로 살라. 이는 그것이 네가 해 아래에서 취하는 네가 수고한 것 가운데 이 인생에서의 너의 몫이기 때문이라.

9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

10 너의 손이 하려고 찾은 일은 무엇이든지, 너의 역량을 다하여 그 일을 하라. 이는 네가 가는 음부 속에는 일도 없고 계책도 없으며 지식도 없고 지혜도 없기 때문이라.

10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

11 ¶ 내가 다시 돌이켜 해 아래에서 보았더니, 경주가 빠른 자들에게 있지 아니하고, 전투가 강한 자들에게 있지도 아니하며, 빵이 지혜로운 자들에게 있지도 아니하고, 재물들이 명철의 사람들에게 있지도 아니하며, 호의가 기술이 있는 사람들에게 있지도 아니하니라. 그러나 때와 가능성은 그들 모두에게 발생하느니라.

11 ¶ I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

12 이는 사람 또한 자기 때를 모르기 때문이라. 마치 물고기들이 불행의 그물 안으로 잡히는 것같이, 새들이 올무들 안으로 포획되는 것같이 사람들의 아들들도 불행의 때가 그들 위에 갑작스럽게 임하면 그렇게 그 안으로 걸려드느니라.

12 For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

13 ¶ 내가 또한 해 아래에서 이 지혜를 보았나니, 그것은 나에게 대단해 보였노라.

13 ¶ This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:

14 작은 도시가 있었는데 그 안에는 사람들이 거의 없었도다. 그런데 어떤 위대한 왕이 그곳을 대적하여 와서 그곳을 포위하였고 그곳을 대적하여 거대한 보루들을 지었도다.

14 There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:

15 이때 그곳 안에서 가난하나 지혜로운 사람이 발견되었는데 그가 자기 지혜로 그 도시를 건져냈도다. 그럼에도 바로 그 가난한 사람을 기억하는 사람이 없었느니라.

15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

16 그때 내가 말하기를, “지혜가 힘보다 나으니라. 그럼에도 불구하고 가난한 사람의 지혜는 멸시를 받고 그의 말들은 경청되지 아니하는도다.” 하였도다.

16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

17 지혜로운 사람들의 말들은 어리석은 자들 사이에서 다스리는 자의 외침보다 조용한 가운데 더 잘 들리느니라.

17 The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

18 지혜가 전쟁 무기들보다 나으니라. 그러나 한 명의 죄인이 많은 선을 파괴하느니라.

18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
