사무엘기하 18장

1 그러자 다윗이 자신과 함께 있던 백성을 계수하고 그들 위에 천인대장들과 백인대장들을 세웠더라.

1 And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

2 그리고 다윗이 백성의 삼분의 일을 요압의 수하에, 삼분의 일은 스루야의 아들이자 요압의 형제인 아비샤이의 수하에, 삼분의 일은 가드족 잇타이의 수하에 편성하여 내보냈더라. 그러면서 왕이 백성에게 말하기를, “나도 반드시 너희와 함께 직접 출진하겠노라.” 하였더라.

2 And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.

3 그러나 백성이 대답하기를, “당신께서 출진하셔서는 아니되옵니다. 이는 만일 우리가 도망쳐 버린다 해도 그들은 우리에 대해서 개의치 아니할 것이고 설령 우리 중 절반이 죽는다 해도 그들은 우리에 대해서 개의치 아니할 것이기 때문이옵니다. 그러나 당신께서는 지금 우리 가운데 일만 명의 가치가 있으시니이다. 그러므로 지금은 당신께서 도시 밖에서 우리를 구하시는 것이 더 좋겠나이다.” 하였더라.

3 But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.

4 그러자 왕이 그들에게 말하기를, “너희가 보기에 가장 좋은 것을 내가 행하겠노라.” 하였더라. 그러면서 왕이 성문 옆에 서자, 온 백성이 일백 명씩, 일천 명씩 나갔더라.

4 And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.

5 그리고 왕이 요압과 아비샤이와 잇타이에게 명령하며 말하기를, “나를 생각해서 그 청년을, 곧 압살롬을 너그러이 다루어 달라.” 하였더라. 그런즉 왕이 모든 대장들에게 압살롬에 관하여 명할 때 온 백성도 들었더라.

5 And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.

6 ¶ 그렇게 하여 백성이 이스라엘을 대적하여 전장으로 나갔더라. 그리고 에프라임 나무숲 속에서 전투가 벌어졌더라.

6 ¶ So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim;

7 그곳에서 이스라엘 백성이 다윗의 종들 앞에 살해되었으니, 그날에 거기에 커다란 살육이 있어 이만 명의 남자들이 살해되었더라.

7 Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.

8 이는 전투가 그곳의 온 지방의 지면 위에 퍼졌기 때문이라. 그런데 그날에 칼이 집어삼킨 백성보다 나무숲이 집어삼킨 백성이 더 많았더라.

8 For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

9 ¶ 그러다가 압살롬이 다윗의 종들과 맞닥뜨렸더라. 그런데 압살롬은 노새 한 마리 위에 올라탔고 노새는 거대한 상수리나무 한 그루의 두꺼운 원가지들 아래를 지나갔는데, 그의 머리가 상수리나무에 걸리는 바람에 그가 하늘과 땅 사이에 들렸더라. 그러자 그의 아래에 있던 노새는 가 버렸더라.

9 ¶ And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.

10 이에 어떤 남자 한 명이 그것을 보고 요압에게 알리며 말하기를, “보소서, 제가 한 상수리나무에 압살롬이 매달려 있는 것을 목격하였나이다.” 하였더라.

10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.

11 그러자 요압이 자신에게 알린 그 남자에게 말하기를, “그런즉 보라, 네가 그를 보았거늘, 어찌하여 네가 그를 거기서 쳐서 땅바닥에 떨어뜨리지 아니하였느냐? 그러면 내가 너에게 은 십 셰켈과 허리띠 하나를 주었으리라.” 하였더라.

11 And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle.

12 이에 그 남자가 요압에게 이같이 말하였더라. “제가 제 손에 일천 셰켈의 은을 받을지라도 여전히 저는 왕의 아들을 대적하여 제 손을 내밀지 아니하였으리이다. 이는 왕께서 우리가 듣는 데서 당신과 아비샤이와 잇타이에게 명하여 말씀하시기를, ‘아무도 청년 압살롬을 손대지 않도록 주의하라.’ 하셨기 때문이니이다.

12 And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.

13 그렇지 아니하였다면 저는 제 자신의 생명을 대적하여 그릇된 행동을 하였으리이다. 이는 왕으로부터 숨겨지는 사안은 없으며, 당신께서도 친히 저를 대적하셨을 것이기 때문이니이다.”

13 Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against me.

14 그때 요압이 말하기를, “내가 너와 함께 이렇게 지체할 수 없도다.” 하였더라. 그리고 그가 그의 손에 세 개의 투창을 취하였으니, 아직 그가 상수리나무 중간에서 살아 있는 동안에 그것들로 압살롬의 심장을 찔렀더라.

14 Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

15 그런 다음에 요압의 병기를 드는 청년 열 명이 주위를 에워싸고 압살롬을 쳐서 그를 살해하였더라.

15 And ten young men that bare Joab's armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.

16 그런 다음에 요압이 나팔을 불었으니, 백성이 이스라엘을 추격하는 것에서 되돌아왔더라. 이는 요압이 백성을 저지하였기 때문이라.

16 And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.

17 그리고 그들이 압살롬을 취하여 그를 나무숲 속에 있는 한 커다란 구렁 속에 던졌고 그의 위에다 돌들로 아주 거대한 무더기 하나를 쌓았더라. 그리하여 온 이스라엘은 모든 사람마다 자기 천막으로 도망쳤더라.

17 And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.

18 ¶ 이때 압살롬이 그의 생전에 자신을 위하여 한 기둥을 취하여 건립하였는데, 그 기둥이 왕의 곡지 안에 있느니라. 이는 그가 말하기를, “나에게는 나의 이름을 기억나게 지켜 줄 아들이 없도다.” 하였기 때문이라. 그런즉 그가 그 기둥을 자기 자신의 이름을 따라 불렀더라. 이에 그것이 오늘날까지 압살롬의 처소라 불리니라.

18 ¶ Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.

19 그때 사독의 아들 아히마아즈가 말하기를, “이제 제가 달려가 주께서 어떻게 그의 원수들에게 그의 복수를 해 주셨는지 왕께 소식들을 가져다드리도록 허락하소서.” 하였더라.

19 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies.

20 이에 요압이 그에게 말하기를, “너는 이날 소식들을 가져가지 말라. 오히려 너는 다른 날에 소식들을 가져가라. 다만 이날에 너는 아무 소식들도 가져가지 말지니, 왕의 아들이 죽은 까닭이라.” 하였더라.

20 And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king's son is dead.

21 그때 요압이 쿠쉬에게 말하기를, “가라. 네가 목격한 것을 왕에게 알리라.” 하였더라. 그러자 쿠쉬가 요압에게 자신의 몸을 숙여 절하고 달려갔더라.

21 Then said Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.

22 그때 사독의 아들 아히마아즈가 그럼에도 다시 요압에게 말하기를, “하지만 그래도 제가 당신께 간구하오니, 저도 쿠쉬를 따라 달려가도록 허락해 주소서.” 하였더라. 이에 요압이 말하기를, “나의 아들아, 네가 준비된 소식들이 없는 것을 알면서 어찌 네가 달려가려 하느냐?” 하였더라.

22 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushi. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready?

23 하지만 그래도 그가 말하기를, “제가 달려가도록 허락해 주소서.” 하였더라. 그러자 그가 그에게 말하기를, “달려가라.” 하였더라. 그때 아히마아즈가 평야 길로 달려가서 쿠쉬를 앞질러 달려갔더라.

23 But howsoever, said he, let me run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushi.

24 그리고 다윗은 두 성문 사이에 앉았더라. 그리고 파수꾼이 성문 위 지붕에 올라가 성벽에 이르러 그의 두 눈을 들어 바라보았더니, 홀로 달려오는 한 남자를 보니라.

24 And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.

25 이에 파수꾼이 외치며 왕께 알렸더라. 그러자 왕이 말하기를, “만일 그가 혼자라면 그의 입안에 소식들이 있느니라.” 하였더라. 그리고 그가 빠른 속도로 와서 가까이 다가왔더라.

25 And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.

26 그런데 파수꾼이 또 다른 사람이 달려오는 것을 목격하였더라. 그리하여 파수꾼이 문지기를 불러 말하기를, “또 다른 남자가 홀로 달려오는 것을 보라.” 하였더라. 그런즉 왕이 말하기를, “그 역시 소식들을 가져오느니라.” 하였더라.

26 And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.

27 그리고 파수꾼이 말하기를, “제 생각에 맨 앞에 있는 자가 달리는 것은 사독의 아들 아히마아즈가 달리는 것 같나이다.” 하였더라. 그러자 왕이 말하기를, “그는 좋은 사람이므로 좋은 소식들을 가지고 오느니라.” 하였더라.

27 And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.

28 이윽고 아히마아즈가 부르며 왕에게 말하기를, “모든 것이 잘 되고 있나이다.” 하였더라. 그러면서 그가 왕 앞에서 땅에 자기 얼굴을 대고 엎드리며 말하기를, “주 당신의 하나님께서 찬양받으시기를 바라나이다. 나의 주 왕을 대적하여 자신들의 손을 들어 올린 사람들을 그분께서 넘겨주셨나이다.” 하였더라.

28 And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.

29 그러자 왕이 말하기를, “청년 압살롬은 무사하냐?” 하였더라. 이에 아히마아즈가 대답하기를, “요압이 왕의 종, 곧 당신의 종인 저를 보냈을 때 제가 커다란 소란 하나를 보긴 하였으나 그것이 무엇이었는지는 제가 몰랐나이다.” 하였더라.

29 And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.

30 그러자 왕이 그에게 말하기를, “옆으로 비켜나 여기 서 있으라.” 하였더라. 이에 그가 옆으로 비켜 가만히 서 있더라.

30 And the king said unto him, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.

31 그런데 보라, 쿠쉬가 왔더라. 이에 쿠쉬가 말하기를, “나의 주 왕이여, 소식들이니이다. 이는 주께서 이날에 당신을 대적하여 일어난 모든 자들에게 당신의 복수를 하셨기 때문이니이다.” 하였더라.

31 And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.

32 그러자 왕이 쿠쉬에게 말하기를, “청년 압살롬은 무사하냐?” 하였더라. 이에 쿠쉬가 대답하기를, “내 주 왕의 원수들과 당신께 해를 입히려고 당신을 대적하여 일어나는 모든 자가 그 청년과 같이 되기를 바라나이다.” 하였더라.

32 And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.

33 ¶ 그런즉 왕이 크게 동요하였고, 성문 너머에 개인실로 올라가서 울었더라. 그리고 그가 가는 동안에 그가 말하기를, “오, 나의 아들 압살롬아, 나의 아들, 나의 아들 압살롬아! 하나님께서 나로 하여금 너를 대신하여 죽게 하셨더라면 좋았으리라! 오 압살롬아, 내 아들아, 내 아들아!” 하였더라.

33 ¶ And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
