사도행전 17장

1 이제 그들이 암피폴리스와 아폴로니아를 경유하였을 때 그들은 데살로니가로 왔으니 그곳에 유대인들의 회당이 하나 있었더라.

1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

2 그러자 바울은 자신이 했던 방식대로 그들에게 들어갔으니, 세 번의 안식일들에 걸쳐 성경 기록들로 그들과 변론하였는데,

2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

3 그리스도께서 반드시 수난을 겪으시고 죽은 자들로부터 다시 살아나셔야 할 필요가 있으셨음을 드러내고 확증하며, “내가 너희에게 선포하는 이 예수가 그리스도시라.” 하였더라.

3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

4 그러자 그들 중 일부가 믿고 바울과 실라와 교제하였더라. 그리고 독실한 헬라인들에 속한 수많은 무리가 그리하였고, 최고위층 여자들에 속한 자들도 적지 않은 수가 그리하였더라.

4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

5 ¶ 그러나 믿지 않은 유대인들이 시기가 발동되어 저급한 수준의 어떤 천한 불량배들을 자신들에게로 데려와 한 집단을 모았으며, 도시 전체에 소동을 일으키고 야손의 집을 급습하였으니, 그들을 백성에게로 끌어내려 하였더라.

5 ¶ But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

6 그런데 유대인들이 그들을 발견하지 못하자, 유대인들은 야손과 어떤 형제들을 도시의 치리자들에게로 끌고 가서 이같이 외쳤더라. “세상을 뒤집어 놓은 이 자들이 여기에도 왔나이다.

6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

7 야손이 그들을 받아 주었으니, 이들 모두가 카이사르의 율령들에 반하게 행하며 예수라 하는 또 다른 왕이 한 명 있다고 말하나이다.”

7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

8 그런즉 그들이 이런 것들을 들었을 때 유대인들이 백성과 도시의 치리자들을 곤란하게 하였더라.

8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

9 그러자 그들이 야손과 다른 이들에게서 보석금을 받고 난 후에야 그들은 야손 일행을 가게 하였더라.

9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

10 ¶ 이에 형제들이 즉시 바울과 실라를 밤에 베뢰아로 파송하였더라. 거기에 당도한 그들은 유대인들의 회당 안으로 들어갔더라.

10 ¶ And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11 이들이 데살로니가에 있는 자들보다 더 고상하였던 것은 그들이 온 생각을 다해 준비하여 말씀을 받아들였고 그것들이 그러한가 하여 매일 성경 기록들을 찾아보았기 때문이라.

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

12 그러므로 그들 중 많은 이들이 믿었더라. 헬라인들이자 명망 있는 여자들 중에서도 믿었고 남자들 중에서도 적지 않은 수가 믿었더라.

12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

13 그러나 데살로니가의 유대인들이 바울에 의하여 하나님의 말씀이 베뢰아에서 선포된 것을 알자 그들은 거기에도 와서 백성을 충동질하였더라.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

14 그러고 난 다음에 즉시 형제들은 바울을 멀리 보내어 바다에까지 이르게 하였더라. 그러나 실라와 디모데우스는 거기에 계속 거하였더라.

14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

15 그러자 바울의 안내를 맡은 자들은 그를 아테네까지 데려갔으며 실라와 디모데우스가 최대한 신속하게 바울에게 오도록 하라는 명령을 받고 나서 그들이 떠났더라.

15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

16 ¶ 이때 바울이 아테네에서 그들을 기다리는 동안 도시가 온통 우상 숭배에 빠진 것을 그가 목격하자 그의 영이 그 안에서 격동되었더라.

16 ¶ Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

17 그러므로 그가 회당에서 유대인들과 그리고 독실한 인물들과 논박하였고 시장에서 매일 자신과 만나는 자들과 논박하였더라.

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

18 그때 에피쿠로스 학파에 속한 철학자들과 스토아 학파에 속한 철학자들이 그와 조우하였더라. 그리하여 어떤 이들은 말하기를, “이 말쟁이가 무엇을 말하려고 하는가?” 하였고, 다른 어떤 이들은 “그는 타국 신들의 한 전파자로 보인다.” 하였더라. 이는 그가 그들에게 예수님과 부활을 선포하였기 때문이라.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 그러자 그들이 그를 붙잡았고 그를 아레오파구스로 데려와서 이같이 말하였더라. “이 새로운 교리가 무엇이며 무엇에 관하여 당신이 연설하는지 우리가 알 수 있겠는가?

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 이는 당신이 어떤 이상한 것들을 우리 귀에 들려주기 때문이라. 그러므로 우리는 이런 것들이 무엇을 의미하는지 알고 싶도다.”

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (이는 거기에 있던 아테네인들과 타국인들 모두가 어떤 새로운 것을 말하거나 듣는 것 말고는 다른 것에 전혀 자신들의 시간을 쓰지 않았기 때문이라.)

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

22 ¶ 그때 바울이 마르스 언덕 한가운데 섰으며 이같이 말하였더라. “너희, 아테네 사람들아, 내가 알기로는 너희는 모든 것들에 있어서 너무 미신적이도다.

22 ¶ Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 이는 내가 지나다니며 너희의 예배들을 보는 동안 내가 이 글이 새겨진 제단을 발견하였기 때문이니, 곧 ‘알려지지 않은 신에게’라 하였도다. 그러므로 너희가 무지함으로 경배하였던 그를 내가 너희에게 분명히 밝히노라.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24 세상과 그 안에 있는 모든 것들을 지으신 하나님께서는 하늘과 땅의 주이시므로 그분께서는 사람들의 손으로 지어진 성전들 안에 거하지 아니하시는도다.

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 또한 그분께서 모두에게 생명과 호흡과 모든 것들을 주시므로 마치 그분께서 어떤 것을 필요로 하시는 것처럼 사람들의 손으로 경배받지도 아니하시도다.

25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 그리고 인간들의 모든 민족들을 한 피로 만드시어 온 땅의 표면에 지내도록 하셨으니, 미리 지정된 때들과 그들의 거처의 범위들을 결정하셨도다.

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 이는 그들로 하여금 주를 찾게 하려 하심이요, 혹 그들이 그분을 감지하려 할 경우 그분을 발견하게 하려 하심이라. 그러나 그분께서는 우리 각자에게서 멀리 떨어져 계시지 않도다.

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 이는 그분 안에서 우리가 살고 움직이며 우리가 존재하기 때문이라. 너희 자신들의 시인들 중에서도 어떤 이들이 ‘이는 우리 또한 그분의 후예이기 때문이라.’ 하고 말한 바와 같노라.

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 그렇다면 우리가 하나님의 후예인 고로, 우리는 마땅히 신격을 기예와 사람의 고안에 의하여 새겨진 금이나 은이나 돌과 같다고 생각하지 말아야 하느니라.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

30 그리고 이 무지의 시대들에는 하나님께서 눈감아 주셨으나 이제는 모든 사람들에게 회개하라고 곳곳마다 명령하시느니라.

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31 이는 그분께서 한 날을 지정하셨기 때문이니, 그날에 그분께서는 자신이 임명하신 그 사람을 통하여 의로 세상을 심판하실 것이라. 그분께서는 그를 죽은 자들로부터 살리심으로써 그것에 대하여 그분께서 모든 사람들에게 보장을 주셨느니라.”

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

32 ¶ 이에 그들이 죽은 자들의 부활에 관하여 듣자 일부는 조롱하였고 다른 이들은 말하기를, “우리는 이 사안에 관하여 당신의 말을 다시 듣겠노라.” 하였더라.

32 ¶ And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

33 그렇기에 바울은 그들 가운데서 떠났더라.

33 So Paul departed from among them.

34 하지만 어떤 사람들은 그에게 밀착하며 믿었더라. 그 가운데 아레오파구스의 일원인 디오니시우스가 있었고 다마리스란 이름으로 불리는 여자와 그들과 함께한 다른 이들도 있었더라.

34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
