느헤미야기 4장

1 그러나 이러한 일이 있었으니, 산발랏이 우리가 성벽을 건축한 것을 들었을 때 그가 격노하고 대단히 격분하여 유대인들을 조롱하였더라.

1 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

2 그리고 그는 그의 형제들과 사마리아의 군사 앞에서 일러 말하기를, “이 나약한 유대인들이 무엇을 하는가? 그들이 스스로를 견고하게 하려는가? 그들이 희생 제물을 드리려 하는가? 그들이 하루 만에 끝내려 하는가? 그들이 불탄 건물 파편의 무더기들에서 돌들을 다시 일으키려 하는가?” 하였더라.

2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?

3 이때 암몬족 토비야가 그의 곁에 있었는데 그가 말하기를, “그들이 건축하는 바로 그것 위에 여우 한 마리가 올라가도 그가 실로 그들의 돌벽을 무너뜨리리라.” 하였더라.

3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.

4 오, 우리 하나님이여, 들으소서. 이는 우리가 멸시받기 때문이니이다. 그런즉 그들의 비방을 그들 자신의 머리 위로 돌리시고 포로로 잡혀간 지역에서 그들을 전리품으로 내어 주소서.

4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:

5 그리하여 그들의 죄악을 덮어 두지 마시고 그들의 죄가 당신 앞에서 지워져 없어지지 않게 하소서. 이는 그들이 건축자들 앞에서 당신께 분노를 일으켰기 때문이니이다.

5 And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.

6 그렇게 하여 우리가 성벽을 건축하였더라. 그리고 모든 성벽이 함께 결합되어 그것의 절반에 다다랐더라. 이는 백성에게 일하고자 하는 생각이 있었기 때문이라.

6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

7 ¶ 그러나 이러한 일이 있었으니, 산발랏과 토비야와 아라비아인들과 암몬족들과 아슈돗족들이 예루살렘 성벽들이 지어졌다는 것과 파손된 곳들이 메꿔지기 시작하였다는 것을 듣자 그때 그들이 매우 격노하였고

7 ¶ But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

8 그들 모두가 함께 음모를 꾸몄으니, 와서 예루살렘을 대적하여 싸우고 그것을 방해하려 하였더라.

8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.

9 그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 우리 하나님께 우리의 기도를 드렸고 그들 때문에 주야로 그들을 대적하여 파수대를 세웠더라.

9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

10 그러다가 유다가 이같이 말하였더라. “짐들을 나르는 자들의 힘이 떨어지고 건물 파편이 많이 있나이다. 그렇기에 우리는 성벽을 건축할 수 없나이다.

10 And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.

11 그리고 우리의 대적들은 말하기를, ‘우리가 그들 가운데 한복판에 이르러 그들을 살해하고 공사를 중단시킬 때까지 그들은 알지 못할 것이요, 보지도 못할 것이라.’ 하나이다.

11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.

12 그리고 그들 곁에 거한 유대인들이 왔을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그들이 우리에게 열 번이나 말하기를, ‘너희가 우리에게 되돌아가려고 하는 모든 장소들에서부터 그들이 너희를 덮치리라.’ 하나이다.”

12 And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.

13 ¶ 그러므로 내가 성벽 뒤 더 낮은 곳들 안과 더 높은 곳들 위에 사람들을 세웠나니, 내가 심지어 그들의 족속들대로 그들의 칼들과 그들의 창들과 그들의 활들을 찬 백성을 세웠노라.

13 ¶ Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14 그런 다음 내가 바라본 뒤에 일어나서 귀족들과 치리자들과 백성의 나머지 사람들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “너희는 그들을 무서워하지 말라. 위대하시고 공포스러우신 주를 기억하고, 너희 형제들과 너희 아들들과 너희 딸들과 너희 아내들과 너희 집들을 위하여 싸우라.”

14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

15 이후에 그것이 우리에게 알려졌다는 것과 하나님께서 그들의 계획을 무가치하게 하셨다는 것을 우리의 원수들이 들었을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 우리, 곧 우리 모두가 성벽으로 되돌아왔고 모든 이마다 자기 일로 향하였더라.

15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

16 그리고 그때 이후부터 이러한 일이 있었으니, 나의 종들의 절반은 공사를 수행하였고 그들 중 다른 절반은 창들과 방패들과 활들과 사슬갑옷들을 모두 들었더라. 그리고 치리자들은 유다의 모든 집 뒤에 있었더라.

16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

17 성벽을 증축하던 자들과 짐들을 나르던 자들은 짐을 지던 자들과 더불어 각자 자신의 두 손 중 한손으로는 공사를 수행하였고 다른 손으로는 무기를 들었더라.

17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

18 이는 건축자들이 각자 자기 칼을 자기 옆구리에 찬 채로 이와 같이 건축하였기 때문이라. 그리고 나팔 소리를 내는 자가 내 옆에 있었더라.

18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

19 ¶ 그리고 나는 귀족들과 치리자들과 백성의 남은 자들에게 이같이 말하였더라. “그 공사는 중대하고 크도다. 그런데 우리는 성벽 위에서 분리되어 있으니 서로가 서로에게서 멀도다.

19 ¶ And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.

20 그러므로 어느 곳에서나 너희가 나팔 소리를 들을 때면 너희는 여기 우리에게로 모여들라. 우리의 하나님께서 우리를 위하여 싸우시리라.”

20 In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.

21 그렇게 하여 우리가 공사에 힘썼더라. 그리고 그들 중 절반은 아침해가 떠오를 때부터 별들이 나타날 때까지 창들을 들었더라.

21 So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

22 마찬가지로 같은 시간에 내가 백성에게 말하기를, “모든 자마다 그의 종과 함께 예루살렘 안에서 묵으라.” 하였으니, 이는 그들로 하여금 밤중에는 우리에게 경호대가 되게 하고 낮에는 수고하게 하려 함이라.

22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.

23 그렇게 하여 나도, 나의 형제들도, 나의 종들도, 나를 따른 경호대에 속한 남자들도 모두가 저마다 씻기 위해 옷을 벗는 것을 제외하고는 우리 중 누구도 우리의 옷을 벗지 아니하였더라.

23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
