열왕기상 12장

1 그리하여 르호보암이 셰켐으로 갔으니, 온 이스라엘이 그를 왕으로 삼으려고 셰켐에 왔기 때문이라.

1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

2 그리고 아직 이집트에 있던 느밧의 아들 여로보암이 그것에 관하여 들었을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, (이는 그가 솔로몬왕의 면전에서 도망쳤고 여로보암이 이집트에서 거하였기 때문이라.)

2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)

3 그들이 사람을 보내어 그를 불렀더라. 그리하여 여로보암과 이스라엘의 온 회중이 와서 르호보암에게 이같이 일러 말하였더라.

3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,

4 “당신의 아버지께서는 저희의 멍에를 가혹하게 하셨나이다. 그러므로 이제 당신의 아버지께 속한 가혹한 복무와 그가 저희에게 얹어 놓은 그의 무거운 멍에를 당신께서 더 가볍게 만들어 주소서. 그리하면 저희가 당신을 섬기겠나이다.”

4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

5 그러자 그가 그들에게 말하기를, “앞으로 삼 일 동안 떠났다가 그 뒤에 나에게로 다시 오라.” 하였더라. 그러자 백성이 떠났더라.

5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

6 ¶ 그리고 르호보암왕이 그의 아버지 솔로몬이 아직 살아 있는 동안 그의 앞에 섰던 노인들에게 자문하여 말하기를, “너희는 내가 이 백성에게 대답하는 것에 대하여 어떻게 충고하느냐?” 하였더라.

6 ¶ And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?

7 그러자 그들이 그에게 일러 말하기를, “만일 당신께서 이날 이 백성에게 한 종이 되시고 그들을 섬기시어 그들에게 반응하시며 그들에게 좋은 말들로 이야기하신다면 그때 그들은 영원토록 당신의 종들이 될 것이니이다.” 하였더라.

7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.

8 그러나 그가 그 노인들이 자신에게 준 그들의 조언을 저버렸고 자기 곁에서 성장하고 자신 앞에 선 청년들에게 자문하였더라.

8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:

9 그리하여 그가 그들에게 말하기를, “나에게 ‘당신의 아버지께서 저희 위에 올린 멍에를 더 가볍게 하여 주소서.’ 하고 고한 이 백성에게 우리가 대답하는 것에 대하여 너희는 어떤 조언을 주느냐?” 하였더라.

9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?

10 그러자 그와 더불어 길러진 청년들이 그에게 고하여 이같이 말하였더라. “당신께서는 ‘당신의 아버지께서 저희의 멍에를 무겁게 하셨으나 당신께서는 그것을 저희에게 더 가볍게 하여 주소서.’ 하고 당신께 고한 이 백성에게 이와 같이 말씀하소서. 당신께서 그들에게 이같이 말씀하소서. ‘나의 새끼손가락이 나의 아버지의 허리보다 더 굵으리라.

10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.

11 그런즉 이제 내 아버지는 너희에게 무거운 멍에를 지우셨으나 나는 너희의 멍에를 가중시키겠노라. 나의 아버지는 너희를 말채찍들로 징계하셨으나 나는 너희를 전갈들로 징계하겠노라.’”

11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 ¶ 그렇게 하여 여로보암과 온 백성이 셋째 날에 르호보암에게 왔으니, 왕이 정하며 말하기를, “나에게 셋째 날에 다시 오라.” 한 대로였더라.

12 ¶ So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.

13 그러자 왕은 백성에게 거칠게 대답하고 노인들이 자신에게 준 그들의 조언을 저버렸더라.

13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;

14 그러면서 청년들의 조언에 따라 그들에게 일러 말하기를, “나의 아버지는 너희의 멍에를 무겁게 만들었으나, 나는 너희의 멍에를 가중시키겠노라. 나의 아버지는 또한 너희를 말채찍들로 징계하셨으나, 나는 너희를 전갈들로 징계하겠노라.” 하였더라.

14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 이러한 이유로 왕이 백성에게 경청하지 아니하였더라. 이는 그 원인이 주로부터 비롯되었기 때문이니, 그분께서 친히 말씀하신 것, 곧 주께서 실로족 아히쟈를 통하여 느밧의 아들 여로보암에게 말씀하신 것을 수행하려 하심이라.

15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 ¶ 그렇게 하여 왕이 자신들에게 경청하지 않은 것을 온 이스라엘이 보았을 때 백성이 왕에게 대답하며 말하기를, “우리가 다윗 안에 무슨 몫이 있느냐? 또한 우리는 이새의 아들 안에 유산이 없도다. 오, 이스라엘아, 너희의 천막들로 향하라. 다윗아, 이제 너 자신의 집이나 돌아보라.” 하였더라. 그렇게 하여 이스라엘이 자신들의 천막들로 떠났더라.

16 ¶ So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

17 그러나 유다의 도시들에 거한 이스라엘 자녀들로 말하자면, 르호보암이 그들을 통치하였더라.

17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

18 그때 르호보암왕이 공세를 관리하던 아도람을 보냈더니, 온 이스라엘이 그를 돌들로 치자 그가 죽었더라. 그러므로 르호보암왕은 예루살렘으로 도망치기 위해 자신의 병거 위에 급히 몸을 실었더라.

18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

19 그렇게 하여 이스라엘이 다윗의 집을 대적하여 반역하였으니, 오늘날에 이르니라.

19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

20 그리고 여로보암이 다시 돌아온 것을 온 이스라엘이 들었을 때, 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그들이 사람을 보내어 그를 회중에게로 불렀고 그를 온 이스라엘을 다스리는 왕으로 삼았더라. 오로지 유다 지파만을 제외하면 다윗 가문을 따르는 자가 아무도 없었더라.

20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

21 ¶ 이윽고 르호보암이 예루살렘에 도착하였을 때 그는 유다의 온 집을 베냐민 지파와 함께 결집시켜 십팔만 명의 선정된 남자들을 모았으니, 그들은 용자들이었으며 이스라엘 집을 대적하여 싸우고자 하였고, 솔로몬의 아들 르호보암에게 왕국을 다시 가져오려고 하였더라.

21 ¶ And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

22 그러나 하나님의 말씀이 하나님의 사람 셰마야에게 임하여 이같이 말씀하시니라.

22 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

23 “솔로몬의 아들이요, 유다 왕인 르호보암과, 유다와 베냐민의 온 집과 백성의 남은 자들에게 이같이 일러 말하라.

23 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,

24 ‘주가 이같이 말하노라. 너희는 올라가지 말고, 너희 형제들인 이스라엘 자녀들을 대적하여 싸우지도 말지니라. 모든 사람마다 자기 집으로 되돌아가라. 이는 이것이 나로부터 비롯된 것이기 때문이라.’” 그러므로 그들이 주의 말씀에 경청하였고 주의 말씀에 따라 떠나서 되돌아갔더라.

24 Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.

25 ¶ 그때 여로보암이 에프라임산 속에서 셰켐을 건축하고 그 안에 거하였더라. 그러다가 거기서부터 나가서 프누엘을 건축하였더라.

25 ¶ Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.

26 이후에 여로보암이 그의 마음속으로 이같이 말하였더라. ‘이제 왕국이 다윗의 집으로 되돌아가리라.

26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:

27 만일 이 백성이 예루살렘에 있는 주의 집 안에서 희생 제물을 드리려고 올라간다면 그때는 이 백성의 마음이 그들의 군주, 곧 유다 왕 르호보암에게로 다시 돌아갈 것이요, 그들이 나를 죽이고 유다 왕 르호보암에게 다시 갈 것이라.’

27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.

28 그 때문에 왕이 의논한 뒤에 금송아지들 두 마리를 만들고 그들에게 말하기를, “예루살렘으로 올라가는 것이 너희에게 너무 과하도다. 오, 이스라엘아, 너를 이집트 지역에서 데리고 올라온 너의 신들을 보라.” 하였더라.

28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

29 그런즉 그가 하나는 벧엘에 놓았고, 다른 하나는 그가 단에 두었더라.

29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.

30 그런즉 이 일이 죄가 되었더라. 이는 백성이 한 마리의 금송아지 앞에 경배드리려고 심지어 단까지 갔기 때문이라.

30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

31 이어서 그는 높은 처소들의 집 하나를 만들어 백성 중 가장 낮은 자들 중 일부를 제사장들로 삼았으니, 그들은 레위의 아들들이 아니었더라.

31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.

32 또 여로보암이 유다에 있는 명절과 비슷하게 여덟째 달, 곧 그달의 십오 일에 한 명절을 제정하였으니, 그가 제단 위에 제물을 바쳤더라. 그가 자신이 만든 송아지들에게 희생 제물을 바치면서 벧엘에서도 그렇게 행하였더라. 그리고 그는 자신이 만든 높은 처소들에 속한 제사장들을 벧엘에 배치하였더라.

32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

33 그렇게 하여 그가 자기 자신의 마음으로 고안한 달인, 여덟째 달의 십오 일에 그가 자신이 벧엘에다 만든 제단 위에 제물을 바쳤고, 이스라엘 자녀들에게 한 명절을 제정하였더라. 그리하여 그가 그 제단 위에서 제물을 바치고 향을 태웠더라.

33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
