사무엘기상 4장

1 그런즉 사무엘의 말이 온 이스라엘에 이르렀더라. 이때 이스라엘이 필리스티아인들을 대적하여 전투로 나가서 에벤에젤 옆에 진을 쳤더라. 그리고 필리스티아인들은 아펙에 진을 쳤더라.

1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

2 그러자 필리스티아인들이 이스라엘을 대적하여 자신들의 전열을 가다듬었더라. 그리고 그들이 교전하였을 때 이스라엘이 필리스티아인들 앞에서 패하였더라. 그런즉 그들이 전장에 있던 군사 중에서 약 사천 명의 남자들을 살해하였더라.

2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

3 ¶ 그러자 백성이 진영으로 들어왔을 때 이스라엘의 장로들이 말하기를, “어찌 주께서는 필리스티아인들 앞에서 오늘 우리를 치셨는가? 우리가 실로에서 주의 언약궤를 우리에게로 가져오자. 그것이 우리 가운데 오면 그것이 우리 원수들의 손에서 우리를 구원할 수 있으리라.” 하였더라.

3 ¶ And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

4 그렇게 하여 백성이 실로로 사람을 보내서 그들이 그룹들 사이에서 거하시는, 만군의 주의 언약궤를 거기에서 가져오도록 하였더라. 그리고 엘리의 두 아들들, 홉니와 피느하스도 거기에 하나님의 언약궤와 함께 있었더라.

4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

5 이윽고 주의 언약궤가 진영 안으로 왔을 때, 온 이스라엘이 커다란 함성을 질러서 땅이 메아리쳐 울렸더라.

5 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

6 그리고 필리스티아인들이 그 환호성을 들었을 때 그들이 말하기를, “히브리인들의 진영 안에서 나는 이 커다란 함성은 무엇을 의미하느냐?” 하였더라. 이에 그들이 주의 법궤가 진영 안으로 들어온 것을 깨달았더라.

6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

7 그러자 필리스티아인들이 무서워하였으니, 그들이 말하기를, “하나님께서 그 진영으로 들어오셨도다.” 하였기 때문이라. 그러면서 그들이 이같이 말하였더라. “우리에게 화가 있으리로다! 이는 여태껏 그러한 상황이 없었기 때문이라.

7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

8 우리에게 화가 있으리로다! 누가 우리를 이 막강한 신들의 손에서 구출해 내겠느냐? 이들은 광야 가운데서 모든 재앙들로 이집트인들을 친 그 신들이로다.

8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

9 오, 너희, 필리스티아인들아, 강건하라. 그리고 너희 자신은 남자들답게 행동하라. 이는 그들이 너희에게 종들이었던 것처럼 너희가 히브리인들에게 종들이 되지 않게 하려 함이라. 너희 자신은 남자들답게 행동하여 싸우라.”

9 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

10 ¶ 그런즉 필리스티아인들이 싸웠는데 이스라엘이 패하였으니, 그들이 모두 저마다 자기 천막 안으로 도망쳤더라. 그리고 아주 커다란 살육이 있었더라. 이는 이스라엘의 보병들 삼만 명이 쓰러졌기 때문이라.

10 ¶ And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

11 그리고 하나님의 법궤가 빼앗겼고, 엘리의 두 아들들, 홉니와 피느하스가 살해되었더라.

11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

12 ¶ 이윽고 베냐민에 속한 남자가 군사에서 나와서 달려가 같은 날 실로에 도착하였는데, 그의 옷은 찢어졌고 그의 머리 위에는 흙이 있었더라.

12 ¶ And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

13 그런즉 보라, 그가 왔을 때, 엘리가 길가에서 지켜보며 의자 위에 앉아 있었더라. 이는 하나님의 법궤로 인하여 그의 마음이 떨렸기 때문이라. 그리고 그 남자가 그 도시 안으로 들어와서 그것을 알리자 도시 전체가 부르짖었더라.

13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

14 그리고 엘리가 그 부르짖는 떠들썩한 소리를 들었을 때 그가 말하기를, “이 소란의 떠들썩한 소리가 무엇을 의미하느냐?” 하였더라. 그러자 그 남자가 서둘러 와서 엘리에게 알렸더라.

14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.

15 이때 엘리가 구십팔 세였더라. 그런즉 그가 볼 수 없을 만큼 그의 두 눈이 흐렸더라.

15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.

16 그러자 그 남자가 엘리에게 말하기를, “저는 군사에서 나온 자이니이다. 그런즉 제가 오늘 군사에서 도망쳤나이다.” 하였더라. 이에 그가 말하기를, “나의 아들아, 거기서 무슨 일이 일어났느냐?” 하였더라.

16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?

17 그러자 그 전령이 대답하여 말하기를, “이스라엘이 필리스티아인들 앞에서 도망하였고, 백성 가운데 또한 커다란 살육이 있었으니, 당신의 두 아들, 홉니와 피느하스 역시 죽었으며, 하나님의 법궤는 빼앗겼나이다.” 하였더라.

17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

18 그리고 그가 하나님의 법궤에 관하여 언급하였을 때 이러한 일이 있었으니, 그가 성문의 측면에 있는 의자에서 뒤로 쓰러져 그의 목이 부러졌으니, 그가 죽었더라. 이는 그가 노인이었고 육중하였기 때문이라. 그런즉 그가 사십 년 동안 이스라엘을 재판하였더라.

18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

19 ¶ 그리고 그의 며느리인, 피느하스의 아내는 아이를 가져서 해산이 가까웠더라. 그러다가 그녀가 하나님의 법궤가 빼앗겼다는 것과 그녀의 시아버지와 그녀의 남편이 죽었다는 소식들을 들었을 때 그녀는 자신의 몸을 숙인 채 산고를 치렀더라. 이는 아픔들이 그녀 위에 임하였기 때문이라.

19 ¶ And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

20 그리고 그녀의 죽음의 때가 가까울 무렵 그녀의 곁에 서 있던 여자들이 그녀에게 말하기를, “두려워하지 말라. 이는 네가 한 아들을 낳았기 때문이라.” 하였더라. 그러나 그녀가 대답하지 아니하였으며 그녀는 그것에 유념하지도 아니하였더라.

20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

21 이윽고 그녀가 그 아이를 이카봇이라 이름을 붙이며 말하기를, “영광이 이스라엘로부터 떠났도다.” 하였더라. 이는 하나님의 법궤가 빼앗긴 까닭이요, 그녀의 시아버지와 그녀의 남편 때문이더라.

21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

22 그리하여 그녀가 말하기를, “영광이 이스라엘로부터 떠났도다.” 하였더라. 이는 하나님의 법궤가 빼앗겼기 때문이라.

22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
