예레미야서 18장

1 주께로부터 예레미야에게 임한 말씀이니, 말씀하시기를,

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

2 “일어나서 토기장이의 집으로 내려가라. 그리하면 내가 거기서 너로 하여금 나의 말들을 듣게 하겠노라.” 하셨느니라.

2 Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

3 그러므로 내가 토기장이의 집으로 내려갔더니, 보라, 그가 물레들 위에서 한 작업물을 만들었더라.

3 Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

4 그리고 그가 진흙으로 만든 그릇이 토기장이의 손에서 훼손되었더라. 그렇게 하여 그가 그것을 다른 그릇으로 다시 만들었으니, 그 토기장이에게 좋아 보이는 대로 그것을 만들고자 함이라.

4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

5 그때 주의 말씀이 나에게 임하여 이같이 말씀하셨느니라.

5 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

6 “오, 이스라엘 집아, 내가 이 토기장이같이 너희에게 행할 수 없겠느냐? 주가 말하노라. 오, 이스라엘 집아, 보라, 진흙이 토기장이의 손안에 있는 것같이 이처럼 너희는 나의 손안에 있느니라.

6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

7 내가 어떤 민족과 어떤 왕국에 관하여 그것을 뽑아 버리고 허물어뜨리고 멸망시키겠다고 말하는 어느 순간에

7 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;

8 만일 내가 대적하는 예언을 천명한 그 민족이 그들의 악에서 돌이키는 경우, 나는 내가 그들에게 행하려고 생각한 해악으로부터 돌이키겠노라.

8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

9 그리고 내가 어떤 민족과 어떤 왕국에 관하여 그것을 세우고 심겠다고 말하는 어느 순간에

9 And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;

10 만일 그 민족이 나의 목전에 악을 행하고 그 민족이 나의 음성에 순종하지 아니하는 경우, 그때 나는 친히 그들에게 은총을 주리라고 말한 좋은 것으로부터 돌이키겠노라.

10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

11 ¶ 그러므로 자, 이제, 유다 사람들과 예루살렘 거주자들에게 일러 말하기를, ‘주가 이같이 말하노라. 보라, 나는 너희를 대적하여 해악을 구성하고 너희를 대적하여 계책을 고안하노라. 이제 너희는 모두 저마다 자신의 악한 길에서 되돌아오라. 그리하여 너희의 길들과 너희의 거동들을 선하게 만들라.’ 하라.”

11 ¶ Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

12 그러자 그들이 말하기를, “소망이 없도다. 오직 우리는 우리 자신의 계책들을 따라 살아가겠노라. 그리고 우리는 모두 저마다 자신의 악한 마음의 상상을 실행하겠노라.” 하였도다.

12 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

13 그러므로 주가 이같이 말하노라. 이제 너희는 이방 민족들 가운데서 누가 그러한 것들을 들은 적이 있는지 물으라. 처녀 이스라엘이 몹시 끔찍한 짓을 행하였도다.

13 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.

14 어떤 사람이 들의 바위로부터 나오는 레바논의 눈을 버리고 떠나겠느냐? 아니면 다른 곳에서 나오는 차가운 냇물이 버려지겠느냐?

14 Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?

15 이는 나의 백성이 나를 잊은 까닭이라. 그들이 헛된 것에 대고 향을 태웠고 그들이 아주 오래된 행로들에서 떠나 그들의 길들 가운데 자신들이 걸려 넘어지게 하였으니, 행로들, 곧 포장되지 않은 길에서 걸어다니려 함이며,

15 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;

16 그들의 지역을 황량하게 하여 쉭쉭대는 영속적인 야유 거리가 되게 하려 함이라. 그곳을 지나다니는 모든 이마다 경악하고 그의 머리를 내저으리라.

16 To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head.

17 내가 동풍으로 흩듯이 그들을 그 원수 앞에서 흩겠노라. 내가 그들의 재난의 날에 그들에게 등을 보이고 얼굴을 보이지 아니하겠노라.

17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

18 ¶ 그때 그들이 말하기를, “오라, 우리가 예레미야를 대적하여 계책들을 고안하자. 이는 율법이 제사장에게서 사라지지 아니하고, 조언도 지혜로운 자에게서 사라지지 아니하며, 말씀도 예언자에게서 사라지지 아니할 것이기 때문이라. 오라, 그리하여 우리가 혀로 그를 치자. 그리고 우리가 그의 말들 중 어떤 것에도 주의를 기울이지 말자.” 하였나이다.

18 ¶ Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

19 오, 주여, 저에게 주의를 기울여 주시고 저와 쟁론하는 자들의 음성을 잘 들으소서.

19 Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.

20 악이 선으로 갚아지리이까? 이는 그들이 나의 혼을 노리고 구렁을 팠기 때문이니이다. 내가 그들을 위하여 선한 것을 말하려고, 당신의 진노를 그들에게서 멀리 돌이키려고 당신 앞에 섰던 것을 기억하소서.

20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.

21 그러므로 그들의 자녀들을 기근에 넘겨 버리시고 칼의 물리력으로 그들의 피를 쏟아내게 하소서. 그리하여 그들의 아내들이 그들의 자식들과 죽음으로 갈라지고 과부들이 되게 하소서. 그리고 그들의 남자들은 죽음에 처해지게 하소서. 그들의 청년들은 전투 가운데서 칼에 의하여 살해당하게 하소서.

21 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

22 당신께서 그들 위에 군부대를 갑작스럽게 데려오시면 그들의 집들에서 부르짖음이 들리게 하소서. 이는 그들이 저를 잡으려고 구렁을 팠고 저의 발들을 노리고 올무들을 숨겼기 때문이니이다.

22 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

23 그럼에도 주여, 당신께서는 저를 대적하여 저를 살해하려고 하는 그들의 모든 계획들을 아시나이다. 그들의 죄악을 용서하지 마소서. 또한 그들의 죄를 당신의 면전에서 지워 없애지 마소서. 오히려 그들이 당신 앞에서 뒤엎어지게 하소서. 당신의 분노의 때에 그들을 이와 같이 다루소서.

23 Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.
