잠언 17장
1 마른 빵 한입을 가지고 평온한 것이 희생 제물들로 가득한 집에 분쟁이 있는 것보다 나으니라.
1 Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.
2 지혜로운 종은 수치를 일으키는 아들을 다스릴 것이요, 형제들 가운데서 유산의 지분을 소유하리라.
2 A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
3 도가니는 은을 위한 것이요, 용광로는 금을 위한 것이나 주께서는 마음들을 정련하시느니라.
3 The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
4 사악하게 행하는 자는 거짓 입술에 주의를 기울이느니라. 그리고 거짓말쟁이는 간악한 혀에 귀를 내주느니라.
4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
5 가난한 자를 조롱하는 자는 누구나 그를 만드신 분을 모욕하는 것이라. 그리고 재난들을 반가워하는 자는 형벌을 면하지 못하리라.
5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
6 손주들은 노인들의 왕관이라. 그리고 자녀들의 영광은 그들의 아버지들이라.
6 Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
7 탁월한 언사는 어리석은 자에게 걸맞지 아니하니라. 하물며 거짓말하는 입술은 통치자에게 훨씬 더 걸맞지 아니하니라.
7 Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
8 선물은 그것을 가진 자의 두 눈에 보석과 같으니라. 그 선물이 어디로 돌이키든지 그것은 형통하게 하느니라.
8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
9 위법을 덮어 주는 자는 사랑을 구하느니라. 그러나 사안을 되풀이해서 말하는 자는 참다운 친구들을 분리시키느니라.
9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
10 어리석은 자에게 가하는 일백 번의 채찍질보다 지혜로운 사람에게 가하는 한 번의 책망이 더 깊이 박히느니라.
10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
11 악인은 반역만을 찾느니라. 그러므로 잔인한 전령이 그를 대적하여 보냄을 받으리라.
11 An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12 자신의 어리석음 가운데 있는 어리석은 자보다는 차라리 자신의 새끼를 빼앗긴 암곰으로 하여금 사람을 만나게 하라.
12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
13 선을 악으로 갚는 자는 누구나 악이 그의 집에서 떠나지 아니하리라.
13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 분쟁의 시작은 누군가 물을 방류할 때와 같으니라. 그러므로 그것에 말려들기 전에 다툼을 중지하라.
14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
15 사악한 자를 정당화하는 자와 의인을 정죄하는 자, 그들은 둘 다 주께 가증함이라.
15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
16 어찌하여 어리석은 자가 지혜에 마음이 없으면서도 지혜를 얻으려고 그의 손안에 값을 들고 있느냐?
16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
17 친구는 언제라도 사랑해 주며, 형제는 역경을 위하여 태어났느니라.
17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
18 명철이 결여된 사람은 손들을 마주치며 자기 친구의 면전에서 보증인이 되느니라.
18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
19 불법을 사랑하는 자는 분쟁을 사랑하느니라. 그리고 자기 대문을 크게 높이는 자는 멸망을 구하는 것이라.
19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
20 왜곡된 마음을 가진 자는 좋은 것을 발견하지 못하느니라. 그리고 비뚤어진 혀를 가진 자는 해로움 속으로 떨어지느니라.
20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
21 어리석은 자를 낳는 자는 그 일로 자신을 슬프게 하느니라. 그런즉 어리석은 자의 아버지는 즐거움이 없느니라.
21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
22 즐거워하는 마음은 약같이 좋으나 상한 영은 뼈들을 마르게 하느니라.
22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
23 사악한 사람은 공의의 길들을 비뚤어지게 하려고 품에서 뇌물을 꺼내느니라.
23 A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
24 지혜는 명철을 지닌 자의 앞에 있느니라. 그러나 어리석은 자의 두 눈은 땅의 끝들에 있느니라.
24 Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
25 어리석은 아들은 그의 아버지에게 비통함이요, 그를 낳은 여인에게 쓰라림이라.
25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
26 또한 의인에게 형벌을 내리는 것은 선하지 아니하며, 공평을 위하여 통치자들을 내리치는 것도 선하지 아니하니라.
26 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
27 지식이 있는 자는 자신의 말들을 아끼느니라. 그리고 명철의 사람은 탁월한 영을 가졌느니라.
27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
28 어리석은 자라도 그가 자신의 침묵을 지킬 때는 지혜롭게 여겨지느니라. 그리고 자기 입술을 다물고 있는 자는 명철한 사람으로 여겨지느니라.
28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
