신명기 20장

1 네가 너의 원수들을 대적하여 전투를 치르러 나갔다가 말들과 병거들과 너보다 많은 백성을 볼 때면, 그들을 무서워하지 말라. 이는 주 너의 하나님께서 너와 함께 계시기 때문이라. 그분께서 너를 이집트 지역에서 데리고 올라오셨느니라.

1 When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

2 그런즉 너희가 전투에 가까이 갈 때 이러한 일이 일어나야 하리니, 제사장은 백성에게 다가가 전하며,

2 And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,

3 그들에게 이같이 말할지니라. ‘오, 이스라엘아, 들으라. 너희가 이날에 너희 원수들을 대적하여 전투하기 위해 다가가고 있으니, 너희 마음으로 하여금 낙담하게 하지 말고, 두려워하지 말며, 떨지 말라. 또한 너희는 그들로 인하여 공포스러워하지도 말라.

3 And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them;

4 이는 주 너희 하나님께서는 너희와 함께 가시며 너희를 위하여 너희의 원수들을 대적하여 싸우시고 너희를 구원하시는 분이시기 때문이라.’

4 For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

5 ¶ 그런즉 관원들은 백성에게 이같이 일러 말할지니라. ‘새 집을 건축하고 그곳을 봉헌하지 아니한 어떤 남자가 있느냐? 그가 전투 가운데 죽어서 다른 사람이 그것을 봉헌하지 않도록 그는 자기 집으로 되돌아갈지어다.

5 ¶ And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

6 다음으로 포도원을 세우고 그곳에서 난 것을 아직 먹지 아니한 어떤 남자가 있느냐? 그가 전투 가운데 죽어서 다른 사람이 그곳에서 난 것을 먹지 않도록 그 또한 자기 집으로 되돌아갈지어다.

6 And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.

7 다음으로 한 아내와 정혼하고 그녀를 취하지 아니한 어떤 남자가 있느냐? 그가 전투 가운데 죽어서 다른 남자가 그녀를 취하지 않도록 그는 자기 집으로 되돌아갈지어다.’

7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

8 그런 다음에 관원들은 추가로 백성에게 이야기할지니, 그들은 이같이 말할지니라. ‘두려워하고 마음이 낙담한 어떤 남자가 있느냐? 그의 형제들의 마음이 그의 마음과 마찬가지로 낙담하지 않도록 그는 자기 집으로 되돌아갈지어다.’

8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart.

9 그런 다음에 관원들이 백성에게 이야기하는 것을 끝마칠 때 이러한 일이 있을지니, 그들은 군사들의 대장들을 세워 백성을 이끌게 할지니라.

9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.

10 ¶ 네가 그곳을 대적하여 싸우려고 어떤 도시에 가까이 가면 그때 그곳에 화평을 포고할지니라.

10 ¶ When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

11 그러고 나서 이러한 일이 있으리라. 만일 그곳이 너에게 화평의 회답을 하고 너에게 성문을 열면, 그때 이러한 일이 있으리니, 그 안에서 발견되는 모든 백성이 너에게 조공을 바치는 이들이 되리라. 그런즉 그들이 너를 섬기리라.

11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.

12 그런데 만일 그곳이 너와 화친을 맺지 않으려 하고 오히려 너를 대적하여 전쟁을 일으킨다면, 그때 너는 그곳을 포위할지니라.

12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:

13 그리고 주 너의 하나님께서 너의 손안에 그곳을 넘겨주실 때, 너는 그곳의 모든 남성마다 칼날로 칠지니라.

13 And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:

14 그러나 여자들과 어린것들과 가축들과 그 도시 안에 있는 모든 것, 곧 그곳의 모든 노획물을 너는 너 자신에게로 취할지니라. 그리하여 너는 너의 원수들의 노획물을 먹을지니, 그것은 주 너의 하나님께서 너에게 주신 것이라.

14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

15 너는 이 민족들의 도시들이 아닌, 너에게서 아주 멀리 떨어진 모든 도시들에게 이와 같이 행할지니라.

15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

16 그러나 주 너의 하나님께서 너에게 유산으로 주시는 이 백성들의 도시들에서 너는 호흡하는 것을 아무도 살려 두지 말지니라.

16 But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:

17 오직 너는 주 너의 하나님께서 너에게 명령하신 대로 그들을 모조리 멸할지니, 즉 히타이트족들과 아모리족들이요, 가나안족들과 프리즈족들이요, 히위족들과 여부스족들이라.

17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee:

18 이는 그들이 자신들의 신들에게 행한 자신들의 모든 가증함들을 따라 행하도록 그들이 너를 가르치지 않게 하여 너희로 하여금 그와 같이 주 너희 하나님을 대적하여 죄를 짓지 않게 하려 함이라.

18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God.

19 ¶ 네가 어떤 도시를 점령하고자 그곳을 대적하여 전쟁을 일으켜 오랜 시간 동안 그곳을 포위할 때면, 너는 그곳의 나무들에 도끼를 사용하여 그것들을 파괴하지 말지니라. 이는 네가 그것들에서 나는 것을 먹을 것이기 때문이라. 그런즉 너는 포위하는 데 그 나무들을 이용하려고 그것들을 베어내지 말지니라. (이는 들판의 나무가 사람의 생명이기 때문이라.)

19 ¶ When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man's life) to employ them in the siege:

20 단, 그 나무들이 음식으로 쓰이지 않는 것들임을 네가 알고 있는 나무들은 네가 그것들을 파괴하고 찍어 쓰러뜨릴지니라. 그리하여 너와 전쟁을 벌이는 도시가 정복될 때까지, 너는 그곳을 대적하여 보루들을 구축할지니라.

20 Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.
